Elite: Dangerous - E3 2014 trailer

I'm kinda shocked they did not show off the amazing jump sequence, with countdowns and stars flying by and all that stuff.

Anyway. Oldie gif time.

For those among us that have no clue about the game, hop on youtube and watch some people playing the alpha. Tremendous depth and amazing sound design.

On the topic of sound: To find their main OST guy they sent a clip out and asked musicians to score it. This one "won".

Not content with only E:D? Take a look at limit theory.

The "Dangerous" always boggled my mind. It sounds so god damn lame. Simple "Elite" would be perfect.

It looks amazing though. I almost disbelieve that it will actually look and work like trailers suggest. One X Rebirth was enough.
But I trust Braben.

This. I had not checked this game before due to guessing it would be some kind of military shooter. I was clearly mistaken tho, and this game is looking really good.

This, No Man's Sky and possibly The Universim... so many hopes.

Don't you dare forget Star Citizen!

I'm loving the beta for this right now. Its sound design is unbelievable, and its Oculus Rift implementation is honestly one of the best I've seen (galaxy map is super broken with it though).

I think a lot of these AAA games really don't cost the ridiculous amounts we are told, i think its more a case of brainwash us into believing it so they can get away with micro transactions, tons of dlc, etc.

Someone mentioned in another thread that a recent AAA console game was actually made for about 4 million, but with a 20+ million budget for just marketing.

It depends on the project, and yeah, for consoles oyu better put aside severla million just for marketing, or hope to hell and back MS/Sony promote it or no one will buy it. On PC, it's a different matter, but marketing is still beneficial.

You figure an average salary for anyone indispensible of $80,000 a year. The overhead in benefits and other payables might be in the $20,000 range. So on average maybe $100,000 per employee at the near top level (not including THE top engineer, THE top artist, the CEO, etc), and I'd wager around $75,000 for those under them.

Even with a modest team in the dozens we're talking a couple of million a year easy, not including electricity, equipment, IT costs, rent, etc, etc.

I'm pretty sure these guys have other funcding aside from the kickstarter, and the Alpha/BEta phases probably helped abit too.

Dangerous is one of the ranks within the game, it makes sense to long time fans.

"It looks amazing though. I almost disbelieve that it will actually look and work like trailers suggest. One X Rebirth was enough."

Most of that was straight up game footage. Like things you can do in the premium beta right this second. Taking off from a dock, flying out of the space port, etc. etc.

COLONY WARS! IS THAT YOU?! I HAVEN'T SEEN YOU IN SO LONG!

This game shares nothing in common with Colony Wars except that it's in space and you're in a fighter. This series has predated Colony Wars by many years.

But it is great to see this lost genre finally seeing the light of day again.

So, if I felt like giving the original a shot since I've nothing better to do, which platform would be the best one to look at? I saw it's on the NES, which perplexes me greatly, while also being on the usual Micro, Speccy and such.

Awesome trailer.

Horrible
title.

It's a shame nobody likes the title, it's actual decent fan service for people like me who played the original on C64. Elite was the game, Dangerous was a high-level pilot rank. If memory serves me right I got to Deadly but never reached Elite.

Probably Archimedes.

This... THIS is the game i want. This is the kind of game i want... and i want more this kind of games.
On consoles. Fuck. (Yes yes, i figure i will eventually get a PC capable of running this but that doesn't change the fact i very much prefer playing on consoles)

(No, not interested in Star Citizen, it isn't hard SF enough for me, unlike this).

I remember playing the original game on my dad's Apple IIc as a little kid.

I could never dock the damn ship.

Let me guess, you were a slow and cautious pilot trying to crawl into the bay.

I just lined up and went full throttle, never failed

Got to admit though, manual planetary landing in Frontier was tricky, especially in a panther clipper

The game looks super-neato, but that countdown bugs the heck out of me each time I see/hear it. The voice is off (early) by a full second! For instance, she says "Three" the instant the "3" digit shows up in the display, but of course "3.99" is still showing at that point, which is basically still "Four". She says "One", when 1.99 is showing, and stops counting with .99 still on the clock.

It's maddening. : )

I hope there's a massive, angry thread on this in the forum. It's bugged me since I saw the first hyperspace video.

Oh god I love getting annoyed at stupid stuff

That's at US rates. Put most of the work on your project somewhere else where the bang for buck is better and I can see it being very doable with a few million.

So much spacefaring these next years... Love it. This, Star Citizen and No Man's Sky will hopefully make for a new Golden Age of the genre.

Most eagerly awaited game currently. Should be GOAT space sim.

Elite: Dangerous isn't such a bad name. It's a bit english campy, but it works.

If I could rename it... maybe Elite: Interdiction. A sly wink at it tackling Star Citizen with a superior and much cheaper game.

No Man's Sky will still be worthwhile playing though; neither ED nor SC will let the player go on foot onto planets to investigate - although ED eventually plans on allowing this.

When does this come out?

End of the year. Expansions like atmospheric re-entry walking around ships/space/cities etc in 2015.

Like someone else said, its all in-game, and it looks like that, currently in premium beta. Heck, im running it with a phenom 1090T, 4GB and a 460GTX, very "old" in PC standards, and if i stay far from the ring planets, im ok. Asteroids arent a problem, mostly streaming the gas giant and its ring. But the space station, hyperdrive, etc, smooth as butter. Incredibly optimized engine for beta state. They implemented the background with its 400 billion solar systems, its no longer a skybox, yet it still runs as smoothly as alpha..

These guys know how to make a graphic engine.

I don't like it either. Elite was the only tangible goal the game had, and I never did got there. But that's what made it a great title. Even I could make 'Dangerous'. It's a literal downgrade of the title's meaning. It'd be like 'Die Hard 2: Die almost as Hard'.

Yeah, I am ashamed of how I misjudged this KS at the beginning.

I really don't want to keep comparing but the enormous difference in budgets and where both games currently are; Elite Dangerous is just in a better state right now it seems.

I feel like Star Citizen is aiming too big especially with their stretch goals.

The sound design in this game is phenomenal, holy shit. I wish I had the money to upgrade my PC and buy the game right now.

Uh... Elite came out before Privateer. What the hell are you talking about?

Never heard of Elite before. This demo gives me strong Privateer vibes. I'm not sure what's so difficult for you to understand about that.

The game looks amazing. The name "Elite: Dangerous" is ridiculously bad.

Is the beta more optimized than the latest Star Citizen release?

The latest Star Citizen release is an alpha, though, not a beta like Elite Dangerous. E:D has been in development for longer than SC.

He's just referring to the fact that Privateer is actually a Wing Commander take on the original Elite premise.

People really have to stop with this statement. Bradben himself stated that development really only started after the conclusion of their Kickstarter.
