I just noticed when the cop looks up from the desk and the headlights shine, it cuts to the T-800's car ploughing through the entrance and the headlights aren't on.

It's the first time in the film when you realize what they're up against. Sarah is in what seems to be an ultra-safe place: the middle of a police station teeming with armed cops. The terminator walks in and just upends that sense of safety, relentlessly.

I kinda wish we had some scenes of the cops wondering why he wasn't going down.
There were a few moments of this, such as the first person shot of the guy firing on him in the hallway before turning and running (and getting shot in the back). The sequence is great partly because it's so swift: terminator walks in, there is mass confusion and panic as he just plows through everyone quickly. No time to really do anything about it. It's terrifying.

Yup. The original really doesn't get the credit due. Damn. I haven't watched the movies in so long I think I know what I'm doing tomorrow. lol

I'm of the camp that T1 is almost as good as T2, if not its equal. If Cameron would've had a bigger budget to work with then who knows how much better T1 would be. Movie is right up there with Blade Runner and Alien as a legendary scifi film of the late 70s/80s.

I think that with a bigger budget it would lose everything that is good about it. It's one of those films (like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre) that wouldn't have been the same without the restraints.

Edit: I'd also rather have the special effects from this film over ANY CGI.

Couldn't agree more. The editing and sound work, in particular, makes this sequence something special. Of course, I'm a bit of a Cameron fanboy, but as As GhaleonEB said, this is really the moment when it clicks - when Kyle's speech hits home: it absolutely will not stop, ever, until you are dead.

C'mon, those scenes where the Terminator is repairing itself and it looks like Michael Myers with a stiff neck, at least agree with me that those scenes could use some better effects. I'm ok with everything else remaining the same but fuck me if those scenes aren't hilariously terrible.

You're a big guy.
I kinda wish we had some scenes of the cops wondering why he wasn't going down.

That would be such an obvious thing to do. The whole sequence shows that he can't be taken down. Everything is chaotic and confused: the message of the scene is to be afraid, very afraid. It is absolutely brilliant.

Damn I love this movie, by far the better Terminator film.

Yeah, the sense of claustrophobia would be gone I think. Without the constraints you would end up with something more like T2. A good movie, but in the end just a solid action movie, nothing more. T1 was amazing,

Yep.

I think the bit where he punches through the car windscreen (which is before this) gives you a taste of what they're up against.

This is definitely one of greatest scenes ever though.

A fantastic piece of film that truly never gets old!

It's such a relentless piece of film to watch, she thinks she is safe, as normal convention would say she is, but then the true horror of what is hunting her down comes crashing (literally) through the front door.

T1 is a better movie. The characters are better, there's more tension and drama, Ahnuld is more intimidating than Robert Patrick, there are tits, plus no annoying child actors. T2 has better stunts and special effects but it also cost 10x as much to make.

Another great scene is the Technoir massacre, when Arnold starts shooting his uzi; his body language is INCREDIBLE. You can see him acting truly like a machine; the methodological scanning motion with the uzi, the way he switch stances once he sees that the threats are gone and walk in a cold, lifeless way holding his uzi up.

Awesome stuff.

This movie was almost an horror movie to me as 6 year old kid. The only presence of the Terminator was absolutely terrifying. At the same time i love the atmosphere of the movie is just perfect. The 80´s were some god dammed magical times. I miss them.

I just edited my post to say that I'd take the special effects from this film over any CGI.

I always like it at 2:58 when he gets hit by a few bullets and staggers slightly, then just looks pissed and pulls up the shotgun.

Also, buy the recent Blu-ray. They did a fantastic job on the remaster.

I don't think there's any "almost" about it. It is a sci-fi horror movie.

Plus, if there wasn't T1 then we would've never had the best DBZ arch with the Cell series. So T1 is possibly one of the greatest movies of all time.

Yeah, I think your first reaction to shooting at someone point blank to no effect would be confusion (How did I miss? Did my gun jam? Is he wearing body armor?) followed shortly by full on panic as the person in question turns to fire on you. The hallway scene mentioned above captures this perfectly. The scene works because everyone, even the audience, is completely blind to how impervious this thing really is.

When thinking of other movies that completely destroy your sense of safety in a police station, only Jeepers Creepers 1 really comes to mind.

Watched this movie two days ago. Is a classic. You dont need blow half a city to make fucking good scenes.

Do you get a choice of audio tracks on current DVD/BD releases or has the original been Lucas'd?

Because those new remastered shotguns sound fucking lame. 80's movie shotguns were the shit.

No idea. I don't own any DVD versions.

Only the VHS version which doesn't have the butchered sounds.

I think it's still the best Terminator film, Arnold really suited being the bad guy

but he can't just kill people like this. they are humans and have feelings!

stupid terminator 2...ugh!
John Connor was just a kid in T2, he wasn't ready to see the black guy and the mullet dude getting their heads blown off by the Terminator in the parking lot.

He was just thinking like a kid. Kids don't want stuff like this.

Its a great movie, but it has gotten old.

As another poster said, the self-repair scene is comical, and the chase scenes near the end with the stop motion animation is almost lol-worthy.

And y'all need to stop hating on T2. Robert Patrick IS scary, because he's creepy in an intelligent and subtle way, and you won't know that he's a killer until your about to die. The dude could turn into A FLOOR. He can look and sound like anyone. You're not escaping him. The way you killed the first terminator will absolutely not work with the T-1000.

The first movie is good because it works so well with primal fears. Fears of the unknown (the future), fears of technology (Skynet), and fears of a powerful bogey man coming after you (the terminator).

But those outdated effects scenes need to be Lucased. :)

Watch this

Listen to that puny handgun when shooting fake Sarah.

I hated that. The only copy I had as a kid was recorded from the television with the better sound effects. I was gutted when I bought it on DVD.

This film is also one of the best "night time" films. Really brave decision to film mostly at night with their budget. It makes a huge difference to the atmosphere.

But those outdated effects scenes need to be Lucased. :)

This would make me puke, just the suggestion brought bile to my throat.

Why would they do that? Ugh.

Great track. Also:
PERTURBATOR - Humans Are Such Easy Prey
and less directly but still clearly T1 inspired I think:
PERTURBATOR - War Against Machines

Funnily enough I was listening to this when I clicked to this thread.
