As you may or may not know, Satoru Iwata, president of Nintendo, had to undergo an operation recently. According to a statement made by him, the procedure was successful and he is now in the process of recovery.
Many of us gamers, both on GAF and on other sites, think this is a good time to show our unified support and appreciation for a man that has had an undeniably positive influence on the gaming industry.
Hopefully Iwata will be able to make a complete recovery, and if there's anything we can do to cheer the man up, I think we should.
The direction that seems to make the most sense is to do something in the spirit of this lovely poster 4chan made for Nintendo's Treehouse, to show their appreciation for all the hard work they put into Nintendo's E3 livestreams.

To get the ball rolling, we have this awesome piece from fellow GAFfer KnaveX:
Suggestions or ideas for alternative plans of action are more than welcome, and I'll be updating this post regularly to reflect the most popular (and realistic) ones.
Lets all put a big smile on Iwata's face, in return for the countless smiles, laughs, and bright memories he and all the hard working people at Nintendo have given us!
edit1: I really like this approach: try to make it something personal and meaningful for Iwata, rather than memes and general showing off towards other Nintendo fans on the 'net.
edit2: a suggestion has been made to try and involve other gaming forums in this endeavor. If we can pull it off, that's something that could make for a very special gift.
Anyone interested in helping figure out the logistics of this kind of operation?
edit3: Looks like we'll be going in this direction: making a large ( roughly A2 sized, depending on the number of submissions) frame based on the recognisable shape of Iwata's first computer (probably just the screen to leave more room for individual cards). Your contributions will be resized and placed within the screen area. Details regarding printing and delivering are yet to be determined, but GAFfer Cheesemeister, who is fluent in Japanese and currently in Kyoto, has offered to help.
edit4: Preliminary Guidelines for Submissions:
Below is what we have so far, in terms of general layout.
Keep in mind that the final size of your image will depend on the number of submissions we get for this. We are generally aiming for somewhere between 300x250 and 200x150 pixels, so make sure whatever you submit is flexible enough to fit anywhere in that range.
Here's a very rough, preliminary layout test I quickly put together using a 12 by 12 arrangement of 150px by 200px images, in order to see if this is a good size for the individual submissions.
alternate layout suggestions by GAFfer Cosmonaut X:
edit5: for those who want to incorporate their Mii* into their drawing (optional):
example.
If we get enough pictures to fill one side of the card we may use individual Miis along with a personal message on the other side, like this. But please don't count on this option until we finalize the layout and figure out the costs of printing and delivering. For now, concentrate on the one side, with the images.

edit 7: Work Complete!
TitusGroan's layout suggestion, based on my rough draft of CosmonautX's ideas, above, my own suggestion based on CosmonautX's idea, BGBW's assembling of everyone's Miis, TitusGroan's collage of everyone's pictures, additions and retouching done by yours truly, the design starts coming together, coming together even more thanks to some helpful contributions by Chaos17, final push, last minute additions, and that brings us to 'work complete' above!
edit 8: Printed!
(those fluent in Japanese will also notice a typo was fixed)
edit 9: Delivery!
Thank you so much to the amazing people at NCL who made this happen!

This thread is so GAFfers can start submitting individual pictures or messages, as well as contributing ideas on the final form and method of delivery of our card.

If it's being done with the hope that it ultimately ends up with him, or at least seen by him, I'd suggest picking something from his life in games that would mean something to him, rather than riffing off something from a Nintendo Direct or some other quasi-meme like "Please understand".
He was closely involved with games like Balloon Fight and Kirby, and spent a long time with HAL. I'm sure he's spoken about things like this, and favourite games etc., in Iwata Asks.
Suggestions off the top of my head:
Pick something that would mean something important to him, rather than something that GAF/4ch likes.
- A card in the shape of a character from Balloon Fight/Kirby
- A card riffing off the classic HAL logo
- A series of get well images arranged in the shape/design of the system he learned to program on (name escapes me, but he referred to it in an IA)
There are plenty of GAF members in Japan. Why not hook-up with one of them and arrange to have it printed locally? THE WONDER OF THE INTERNET! ;-)

I'm all up for sending a card, as long as we're doing this for the right reasons, and not just to prove a point to 4Chan or /V or anything. A man's health is far more important than two game forums trying to one-up each other. If it can be organised in a spirit of good will and compassion, I'd be fine with contributing.
Perhaps the idea should also be extended to input from people on 4chan /whereever else, as i'm sure they'd care too (and I certainly don't want it to turn into a competition).
That's actually a really nice idea. If we send a message to the 4chan guys somehow asking them if they'd like to join in, that would show that this is more about gamers coming together through their love of something, rather than having a pissing contest. Others may disagree, but I heartily recommend we try and reach out to /v and get them onboard.

If you did decide to go with the idea of something personal to him, you could try:
The Commodore PET was the computer he bought with his graduation money after graduating from the Tokyo Institute of Technology. It's got a lovely, strong, recognisable design that would lend itself well to being filled with dozens of smaller get-well images.

4chan used approx. 128x128 pixel images for theirs, with a total of 16*14=224 tiles. For now I'm assuming we'll have about half as many tiles in ours, which means they can be about twice as big.If efyu-lemonado doesn't mind, I'll create a card layout mock-up when I get back from work later. If we're going with an A2 design, a picture that fits in a 300x250 pixel box should hopefully allow everyone to get their submissions on there. As long as its a picture that can scale down in size though, I'm sure we'll be able to format it to fit. I'll work out the exact maths this evening, but I think that should work.
Best thing, I think, is not to overthink things, and come up with something that's bright, simple and with a nice message to it. No need to get too complicated or intricate.

alternate layout suggestions by GAFfer Cosmonaut X:
What i did, and the others as i can tell is by logging in Miiverse from PC and then save the image from your avatar.
I got mine from the Nintendo Network Premium site but you can probably get yours from Miiverse. Just copy the image location of your Mii.
*please try not to just dump your Mii in this thread in the hopes that others will find a use for it. A simple image with your Mii and a few kind words is a perfectly acceptable submission.Either find your NNID page and extract it from the page resources or export an image to an SD card via the Mii Maker channels on your 3DS or Wii U.
example.
If we get enough pictures to fill one side of the card we may use individual Miis along with a personal message on the other side, like this. But please don't count on this option until we finalize the layout and figure out the costs of printing and delivering. For now, concentrate on the one side, with the images.
edit6: Updated Guidelines:
- Image size can be anything up to 300x250. Myself and a few others will create a sort of quilt pattern, resizing images as we see fit. Hopefully this will also allow us to put more emphasis on the more visually striking pieces. This is also meant to encourage those of us that are less artistically inclined to participate. If you've already submitted an image that is a bit larger than this, don't sweat it. If you haven't submitted an image yet, please obey the guidelines.
- You can make your image in any style you like: black and white (miiverse style), original art, rudimentary paint image, photoshop, etc. The important thing is to make it genuine and try to be creative.
- No names or nicknames, and I'm leaning towards not even mentioning GAF by name. Personal Miis are ok, but shouldn't be the center of attention. This will also help save space in the final print.
- I'll be setting a deadline for submissions for Thursday, June 26, 10:00 AM PST (1:00 PM EST, 5:00 PM UTC, June 27 2:00 AM Tokyo, 3:00 AM Sydney).
edit 7: Work Complete!
Adding links to some of the stages to show work in progress for those interested:Below are the final images sent to Cheesemeister (these are slightly compressed, the ones sent to him are not). If everything goes according to plan, they should be printed tomorrow (I sent them a bit late for that today), in time for a delivery later this week.
Changes since last update:
Added various greetings and personal messages suggested by GAFfers.
Added late Miis and realigned Miis.
Cosmetic repairs.
Thanks to everyone who contributed!
Special thanks to:
TitusGroan for collecting and ordering your individual pics, contributing to the brainstorming as well as creating the frame for one of the layouts, helping in many other areas throughout the project, and for making sure this thread staid on the right track!
Cosmonaut X for contributing central ideas as well as several key layout concepts and pieces of art that made the final design what it is!
Chaos17 for contributing design ideas and content that helped fill out the layout of the final image.
BGBW for collecting and ordering all the Miis submitted in this thread.
L~A for making the original thread about Iwata's operation, without which this project would not have started.
4chan/v/ for the inspiration!
(I personally do believe that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery)
Last minute contributors who suggested the text for the personal blessings.
Anyone else who took initiative and helped along the way!
And of course, Cheesemeister , who will be taking care of printing and delivery in Kyoto!

edit 9: Delivery!
My contact at Nintendo, Josiah Purtlebaugh, informs me that the posters were delivered to Iwata in the hospital along with a link to this thread.
This is the best possible outcome I could ever hope for!
Thank you so much to the amazing people at NCL who made this happen!
