DOES IT HURT
Oh god. So I decided to defy the laws of Gabenomics and actually played a game I bought during Steam sale. That game was Revengeance. And boy, was it excellent. Both OTs are basically dead and I figured since many people seemed to pick it up during the recent sale there will be more who want to discuss the game.
So, Revengeance. Of course, it's flawed. I guess the combat system could have been deeper. It could have been a bit longer, as clocking at a little shy of 5 hours during first playthrough (I guess 5.5-6 if restarts were included) is quite short for a full release. The second half of the game feels rushed too, it certainly feels like they had to cut quite some content from the final game. The plot is disjointed at times, jumping erratically from one scenario to the other while it feels like some chunks of the plot were excised for no reason whatsoever.
But hell, it's just so fun. So fun. So satisfying. So ridiculously over the top. So awesome. So cuhrayzee. Revengeance is the epitome of what makes games fun and every single aspect of the game just reinforces that, serves the ultimate purpose to make one of the craziest (and at the same excellent!) video games ever.
The plot is ridiculous but it serves the purpose. The dialogues are absolutely ludicrous but they are just so good. The soundtrack? Masterpiece. The songs strike a perfect balance between being trash and genius. Characters are instantly memorable and I'm confident I'll remember them many years down the road.
The soundtrack though, the boss battles, these are the real stars of Revengeance. Everybody knows Rules of Nature, but honestly this is just a taste of what comes next. Random boss battles/music spoilers follow.
Now I'm sitting here, looking at Revengeance at Steam and contemplating another playthrough. This honestly happens rarely, I think the last game that I had an urge to replay instantly after the credits rolled was Skyward Sword over 2.5 year ago.
The prospect of the sequel alone is exciting. Few are the games that are so simply fun to play and where every element of it exists simply to enhance the experience. While it's flawed, it's flaws are easily overlooked and I'm incredibly glad a game like it gained the reception it did. Here's to more Revengeance!

Mistral has an incredibly amazing opening. The way it kicks in as the fight starts is when you know that yep, Metal Gear RAY fight was just the beginning. And then the long arduous battle continues with varied exciting scenarios. Perfect first real boss. Sundowner is interesting if you do it the way it was intended but it's disappointing they let through such an easy way to cheese him. I was surprised that Jetstream Sam was quite a simple fight too, though the locale made up for it.
Senator Armstrong? Incredible. Villains as instantly memorable as him are few and far between. The dialogues. The attitude. The fountain of quotes. I knew he was supposed to be great but he was even better than I expected.
I skipped Monsoon because HOLY MOTHER OF MERCY WHAT A HIGHLIGHT OF THE GAME. Armstrong is better than Monsoon, yes, but Monsoon is right in the middle of the game and imo it's the peak of the game. What is so good about Monsoon? Everything. The fight is incredibly fast paced, the music is great and he makes you stay on your toes the entire time. While in most of the other fights you can release the tension a little by running around dodging the attacks but with Monsoon it will get you nothing.
What really makes him though is the absolutely mind-shattering buildup to the fight. First you are neutered, unable to fight at all for several minutes. Then the cutscene starts. And that cutscene is long. Way long. Too long honestly. It runs for so long that it crosses the line. And it's awesome. For some inexplicable reason that cutscene at the same time is too long and just the perfect length. The buildup throughout the cutscene is incredible. It features some of the most ridiculous dialogues of the game (basically: There are third world impoverished children brains needed to be saved and I'm just sitting here discussing philosophy with terrorists). By the time the cutscene ends you are so pumped you want nothing else but to rip him apart. AND THAT'S WHEN STAINS OF TIME KICKS IN.
HOLY SHIT
Seriously. Senator Armstrong is a magnificent bastard, Mistral is the most varied boss encounter, Metal Gear RAY is an amazing opener, but Monsoon fight is where the game transcends past video games.
