DOES IT HURT

ChGHthF.jpg

Oh god. So I decided to defy the laws of Gabenomics and actually played a game I bought during Steam sale. That game was Revengeance. And boy, was it excellent. Both OTs are basically dead and I figured since many people seemed to pick it up during the recent sale there will be more who want to discuss the game.

So, Revengeance. Of course, it's flawed. I guess the combat system could have been deeper. It could have been a bit longer, as clocking at a little shy of 5 hours during first playthrough (I guess 5.5-6 if restarts were included) is quite short for a full release. The second half of the game feels rushed too, it certainly feels like they had to cut quite some content from the final game. The plot is disjointed at times, jumping erratically from one scenario to the other while it feels like some chunks of the plot were excised for no reason whatsoever.

But hell, it's just so fun. So fun. So satisfying. So ridiculously over the top. So awesome. So cuhrayzee. Revengeance is the epitome of what makes games fun and every single aspect of the game just reinforces that, serves the ultimate purpose to make one of the craziest (and at the same excellent!) video games ever.

The plot is ridiculous but it serves the purpose. The dialogues are absolutely ludicrous but they are just so good. The soundtrack? Masterpiece. The songs strike a perfect balance between being trash and genius. Characters are instantly memorable and I'm confident I'll remember them many years down the road.

The soundtrack though, the boss battles, these are the real stars of Revengeance. Everybody knows Rules of Nature, but honestly this is just a taste of what comes next. Random boss battles/music spoilers follow.
Mistral has an incredibly amazing opening. The way it kicks in as the fight starts is when you know that yep, Metal Gear RAY fight was just the beginning. And then the long arduous battle continues with varied exciting scenarios. Perfect first real boss. Sundowner is interesting if you do it the way it was intended but it's disappointing they let through such an easy way to cheese him. I was surprised that Jetstream Sam was quite a simple fight too, though the locale made up for it.

Senator Armstrong? Incredible. Villains as instantly memorable as him are few and far between. The dialogues. The attitude. The fountain of quotes. I knew he was supposed to be great but he was even better than I expected.

I skipped Monsoon because HOLY MOTHER OF MERCY WHAT A HIGHLIGHT OF THE GAME. Armstrong is better than Monsoon, yes, but Monsoon is right in the middle of the game and imo it's the peak of the game. What is so good about Monsoon? Everything. The fight is incredibly fast paced, the music is great and he makes you stay on your toes the entire time. While in most of the other fights you can release the tension a little by running around dodging the attacks but with Monsoon it will get you nothing.

What really makes him though is the absolutely mind-shattering buildup to the fight. First you are neutered, unable to fight at all for several minutes. Then the cutscene starts. And that cutscene is long. Way long. Too long honestly. It runs for so long that it crosses the line. And it's awesome. For some inexplicable reason that cutscene at the same time is too long and just the perfect length. The buildup throughout the cutscene is incredible. It features some of the most ridiculous dialogues of the game (basically: There are third world impoverished children brains needed to be saved and I'm just sitting here discussing philosophy with terrorists). By the time the cutscene ends you are so pumped you want nothing else but to rip him apart. AND THAT'S WHEN STAINS OF TIME KICKS IN.

HOLY SHIT

Seriously. Senator Armstrong is a magnificent bastard, Mistral is the most varied boss encounter, Metal Gear RAY is an amazing opener, but Monsoon fight is where the game transcends past video games.

Now I'm sitting here, looking at Revengeance at Steam and contemplating another playthrough. This honestly happens rarely, I think the last game that I had an urge to replay instantly after the credits rolled was Skyward Sword over 2.5 year ago.

The prospect of the sequel alone is exciting. Few are the games that are so simply fun to play and where every element of it exists simply to enhance the experience. While it's flawed, it's flaws are easily overlooked and I'm incredibly glad a game like it gained the reception it did. Here's to more Revengeance!

Do it. Replay the game. You know you want to.

Such a great game. Can't wait until Steam finishes downloading. 13GBs have never been so many. HNNNNNNNNG.

And yep, Moonsoon >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

One of my favorite last gen games. It had everything I could possibly want from a game. I listen to the soundtrack regularly and can only imagine what Platinum could do with a sequel that they start from the ground up. That pic with Kojima and the guys at Platinum made me go from six to midnight.

Play it again on a harder difficulty. In typical Platinum/Cuhrayzee fashion, they rearrange encounters and change some boss behavior.

If you haven't touched the DLC, it's very worthwhile and included in the Steam release.

I am really, really glad Revengeance came to PC, and with a decent port too. It feels good to see so many people buying it and seeing how great it is.

I was never really into action games in general until I decided to rent it last year. I beat it in a day, then proceeded to play through it over a dozen more times. And then I bought the soundtrack because it's pretty much the best I've ever heard. Seriously, I can't think of the last time I've seen such amazing usage of music in a game. Platinum knows what's up.

I got it from Gaben this sale as well. I love the hell out of it, despite never playing a Metal Gear game before and knowing practically nothing about the world at large.

And yet, with two playthroughs under my belt, I still cannot parry worth a shit. Mainly in normal combat. When I'm forced to in the Monsoon fight, I can get a rhythm down, but I can never press the stick and button at the exact precise time. Most boss battles end up being me brute-forcing through enemies with nanopastes. Armstrong was the delightful exception, and holy fuck I've never experienced a better final boss than him.

Man, FUCK Mastiffs though. In fact, fuck most of the huge-and-yet-unnaturally-fast enemies in this game.

I played through the game for the first time earlier this year, when the PC port came out and I'll just quote myself from the OT:

I've had like a 4 hour erection, but I don't really feel the need to call my doctor. Just the need to play more Rising.

That whole thing just happened. Hold me, hold me tight, like this game has my balls. It's just not letting go, but it feels so good.

Nobody does fucking bosses like Platinum, this game wasn't made by men and women, it was made by gods.

How I feel right now

I just started this game today, almost 3 hours in, this is just magic. Also, I miss a "roll" option to avoid attacks, It's the only thing that I don't get at all.

Buy the move called Defensive Offensive, it's this game's dodge move and has a lot of invincibility.

It also lets you dodge offset like in Bayonetta.

Dodge is Defensive Offense, which can be bought for 2,000 BP. Super cheap and one of the most useful skills in the game.

I'm the same as you OP. Picked it up last week and am completely in love with it. I'm only up to the third mission atm but I seriously regret not getting this sooner. I've loved all the boss fights so far and the OST just adds so much to the experience.

ANNOUNCE THE SEQUEL ALREADY
I love this.

This reminds me, I have all the DLC left to be played. Awesome game! The combat is just silky smooth and story is funny. Boss fights are though as fuck and all round awesome.

Quoting my beginner help from the other thread:

Remember that you can click the thumbstick to recenter the camera, too. It's a way to quickly re-orient to where Raiden is facing.

Might be a bit late, but here are some general newcomer tips:

  • You can look at your movelist under HELP in the pause menu.
  • Set the camera sensitivity to setting 8 or so.
  • The Parry and Perfect Parry mechanics are the foundation of the entire game.
  • As soon as the store is available, purchase "Defensive Offense". This is a short dash slash with generous invincibility frames to avoid otherwise unblockable attacks (beams, fire, explosions, grabs/throws). The majority of attacks can be canceled into Defensive Offense, so you don't have to let up the offensive.
  • Zandatsu's restore all fuel cell gauge and health. The game is set up where you can Zandatsu every enemy in a engagement and recovery whatever energy you need.
  • Regular fodder enemies can be Zandatsu'd right away. Tougher enemies will either need to be stunned via Perfect Parry or you need to do enough damage to body parts (body parts will have a mild blue glow if they can be severed via Blade Mode).
  • Blade mode camera and the slice angle can be controlled with both thumbsticks. You can press an attack button to actually perform the slice - X for horizontal and Y for vertical. If you line up the initial cut with the sticks, just press an attack button for the surgical slice. Once you've hit the red box target, you can "let'er rip" with the slashes... they won't destroy the spine, but do add to your combo/score.
  • You can cancel anything into Blade Mode. This is useful for canceling the recovery on slower moves.
  • Sometimes certain moves will initiate a slowdown and there will be a blue haze over the screen. This usually indicates a good Zandatsu opportunity, since certain moves will line up easy Zandatsus. Examples are the full L aircombo or running H.
  • Falling Lightning, despite the name, is the easiest way to take out airborne opponents. Purchase it from the shop. This autotracking divekick sets up Zandatsus perfectly against the vulture-types.

The Parry Mechanic
  • A Parry is performed by TAPPING towards the enemy + light attack during the startup and active frames of an enemy's attack. Do not hold directions. Do start from neutral.
  • You must Parry in the direction of the enemy, not necessarily the direction of the attack.
  • You must press toward + light attack for EVERY hit. This means, if a move strikes Raiden three times, you must press towards + light three times, timed for each hit.
  • The Parry is simply a regular block if not timed perfectly. If you time the Parry with the very moment that Raiden will get struck, you'll get a Perfect Parry. Timing is less generous on the harder difficulties.
  • A Perfect Parry will result in a powerful auto-counter slash by Raiden that will typically stun enemies, setting them up for Zandatsu. While you're learning the timing of the Perfect Parries, the general rule of thumb is to attempt Parry earlier rather than later. If you make a mistake, you'll still get the block.
  • You can cancel almost any light attack into the Parry.
  • You can cancel a Parry with Defensive Offense.
  • Aerial Perfect Parries (must be bought in the shop) will hit enemies that otherwise dodge the the grounded Perfect Parry counterattack (such as Geckos).

there is a "roll" and you have parry on top of that.

Thanks! I didn't notice that I can buy that movement.
I suck at parry

you can buy a dodge manoeuvre (offensive defensive) that lets you press a + x to dodge attacks.

Yep! Game was great. Definitely was slim on content, but since they made it in less than a year and the gameplay was so great, I'm completely okay with that. Hopefully we get a sequel.

And I wish we got more of Monsoon. He came and went too fast.

Parry everything! Parry the fuck out of that shit!

Also this...

There's nothing more satisfying than parrying something like Monsoon's surprise attacks (where he throws smoke and then jumps out several times).

do you guys know if the PC version sell well ? I just wanna know if they ever make a MGR2 on PC

I don't think we have hard PC data on MGR sales, but I think I remember reading that they were satisfied.

It was on the encore day for the Steam sale, so I'm guessing it's been doing okay.

THIS GAME..

This game ..

It had to be this way.....

It still think the game had the perfect lenght , it could have been longer but seriously it was jkust was i needed when i want to cut things .. i pick my copy and then i just go

Outstanding game. It oozes style and has one of the best soundtracks of the generation. The greatest content people tend to overlook is the deep codec conversations. There are at least a hundred of them, some only available during special situations like specific phases of boss battles. They're funny and fascinating, and made me grow to love all of the characters.

As you'd expect from a Platinum title, MGR's combat system has hidden depth. Dodge offset, blade mode cancels, and canceling recovery animations with command attacks (any attack that involves a directional input), etc. This game repays serious attention. Also typical of Platinum, the attention to detail is insane. No one can accuse MGR of lacking signature Metal Gear touches and hilarious bonuses (like the soldiers in boxes, naughty posters, and the ability to literally do barrel roles by holding the Ninja Run trigger while hiding in one).

Probably one of my top five games of the last generation. I need a sequel.

A lot of people forget that Platinum made this game in essentially a year and a half. It's pretty amazing that they met those time constraints.

A little more time in the oven and this game would have been incredible. I have high hopes for MGR2.

I agree. I'll take the Parry mechanic over a GOW roll any day.

fantastic game. even better to play when laid up after wisdom tooth surgery on meds.

I now know what soundtrack im listening to on the way home from work.

Whats great about the long winded cutscene is that they poke fun with it with the dialogue and if you turn Raiden's head you'll see this

Also Your first play through is longer than 5-6 hours. The game only counts your most successful level run. It doesn't factor in the deaths, cutscenes, etc...

One of my biggest gaming disappointments in recent time. I wanted so badly to like this and I kinda do, but I can't play it. I've watched videos on Youtube, read about it, and tried and tried and tried, but I just can't get to grips with it.

Yeah, I suck. :(

The tutorial didn't help?

Amazing game. Purest over the top action game I played for a long time.

Hopefully they will be tasked to create sequel, this time with more devtime and focus only on nextgen consoles.

What part gives you trouble?

Try starting on an easier difficulty and making your way up.

B-b-b-but what about the RULES OF NATURE? :(

Yup this game is incrediable. Beaten it 7-8 times since the PC release 6 months ago. I still boot it up now and then just to play some of the boss again.

Oh and the soundtrack is fantastic. Mistral's theme is my personal favorite but their all really good.

A god-tier game. I don't even like character action games, but Platinum MAKE me like them.

The parry system was what set it apart for me. I hate rolling to dodge in action games, usually because the camera is too stupid to keep up and because it looks wrong - rolling through sword slashes with frame invincibility simply looks lame. On the other hand, the parry system made perfect sense from the start and I was good at it from the start. Made the gameplay so crisp and enjoyable. Take that gameplay and add some of the best bosses in history and you have an 8-hour long joy explosion of a game.

The story was also awesome. It did Metal Gear better than a lot of MG games have, by understanding that the plot is ultimately stupid pulp fiction, and taking it to a humorous extreme is the only real way to make it work, while leaving some serious moments and ensuring you care about the main character. Rising nailed all of that.

A stranger you shall remain.

I really enjoyed Sundowner because of how utterly I destroyed him, I felt so damn cool dancing around that shield and beating him down.

Played it right to the end but was just incapable of beating the final boss, he was too difficult for me. But I enjoyed it up to that point. Would probably buy the sequel if it ever came out.

I'll probably finish downloading this by the time my work shift is done. I expect a learning curve, but one that pays off.

I might actually hook up my computer to my TV for this one, assuming it runs well.

Such an amazing game! I've beaten it on almost every difficulty and I still can't get enough of it. I find myself randomly putting it in just to play it again for a little every few months. The combat's just so satisfying, and the soundtrack is really good! I can't wait for a sequel. There needs to be a sequel!

... I think I might play this for a little tonight. This thread's got me itching to go Zandatsu some cyborgs.

I feel like if there was ever a game that needed a sequel (that isn't made by Valve or Sega) it's this. I just had so much fun with Revengeance, even though it was Platinum salvaging the remains of a Kinect game. If Platinum made a sequel from the ground up without letting the game fall into development hell, who knows what we could end up with. I'd be interested in seeing them try to top this game's final boss, which is probably my favourite boss fight ever.

After playing this....found the game as being pretty boring outside of the boss battles which were incredible
A below average game with some of the best boss battles of the last gen....so its a bit polarizing
