Rumour: Diddy Kong Racing 2 became Excitebots; Monster Games working on DKR2 for WiiU

Love the idea of lesser character fighting to be stars on an open world racing game. Its all falls in place very well like a puzzle, which tellms me is probably not happening. But I want to believe!

Diddy Kong Racing is at least twice as good as any of the Mario Karts.

Truth bomb. Also let's not forget what a new Diddy Kong Racing could have over 8. The amazing battle modes.

I'm sure this has been discussed to death already, but why would Nintendo own the rights to the Kong characters Rare created, to the animal buddies, to the Kremlins, to the music etc. but not the rights for Timber, Pipsy and Taj the Genie? That doesn't quite make sense to me.

DKR battle mode is the greatest. Seriously amazing.

So is there any proof of that this blog is actually by Kevin Callahan and not someone impersonating him? This is the only post on that blog aside from a test post, so I'm somewhat skeptical.

There's a lot of people named Kevin Callahan in the world.

I'm not sure why the OP thinks this Kevin Callahan is the person who worked on some WWE games for THQ.

Holy crap! Today's real megaton is that more than two people can have the same first name.

I've edited that part out. Sorry for any confusion!

What characters does nintendo own from diddy kong racing?
Pretty sure they own all of them barring Conker and Banjo. I'm basing this off of the fact that Timber's hat changed to a Nintendo logo in the DS remake and no other characters were removed other than those two.

A new Excite would excite me 5X more.
Absolutely - me too! I LOVED both Excitetruck and Excitebot last gen... played the hell out of them.

Excitebots is pure lunacy!

When Rare was sold, who was going to own each character was part of the negotiation. There's a certain amount of logic there; Donkey Kong was Nintendo's property, and by extension they'd want to own the rest of the characters called "Kong" as well. As for the Kremlins, etc, we don't actually know what they own or don't in each specific case.

Because that's what Nintendo and Rare Ltd. agreed upon in the purchase agreement in 2002. Banjo was also originally owned by Nintendo as far as I remember.

That change is actually quite interesting. However, some characters in DKR DS are still owned by Rare Ltd.

Diddy Kong Racing is still probably my favourite kart racer. That being said, the prospect of a new Excite-like game would excite me more than DKR2. Similar to F-Zero, the more it could do to differentiate from Mario Kart 8, the better.

Yeah, I honestly don't think i'd buy this if it's a mario kart clone. It'll have to be substantially different. Even the hubworld and quests won't be enough. If it's excitebots w/ a hub, i'll probably love it.

Exactly. I'd rather have a new Excite-like game, or a Wave Race, or even a F-Zero.

For kart racers, there's already Mario Kart 8, which is proving to be successful enough.

I'm with you, man.

F-Zero would be the shit.

Before F-ZERO???

It's been nearly 20 years since Diddy Kong Racing's release with no sequel in sight aside from a remake on DS. I'd say fans of that game certainly deserve a good sequel getting made before F-Zero/Excite/Wave Race comes along, especially because those three are classic Nintendo IP that all have the chance of being resurrected at some point. A lot of people expected a sequel to never be made after the Rare buyout considering the loss of the original developers, Nintendo losing rights to a lot of the characters and assets, and the fact that Nintendo would just rely on Mario Kart for that "genre" of racing game.

Besides, I'm sure a hypothetical DKR 2 would differentiate itself from MK in a lot of ways beyond an expanded single player, which no other racer really touches at this point.

The best kart racer ever returns.
In name.

Dev is not the same.

Nothing is the same anymore.

We're probably in for a disappointment, because while MK64 could be easily topped, I can't imagine anyone topping MK8 these days.

Unless they take it in a whole new direction, like a JRPG.

Mario Kart 8 was a massive disappointment, so this better be true. Diddy Kong Racing always crushed Mario Kart 64 anyway.

The more I play MK8, the more I agree. The game literally does nothing new and, apart from the courses, the game certainly appears to be rushed.

I doubt it was rushed, MK7 felt the same for me in a lot of aspects and that one wasn't rushed at all.

Assuming this game exists, would you all be content with the decision to not bring back the original cast/assets? I'd be happy the game is getting made at all, but honestly it would sound like it is more "Diddy Kong Racing" in name only at that point.

Rare probably never intends to use those characters again anyway unless their name is "Banjo" or "Conker" so I can't imagine that Microsoft wouldn't be willing to play ball with Nintendo if they offered to buy back the assets. Considering that same company is willing to shell out cash for games like Bayonetta 2 and Devil's Third, I don't see how a new Diddy Kong Racing wouldn't be worth the investment.

MK7 was rushed as hell, they cut corners everywhere and even had to call Retro Studios to get it out as quickly as possible.

Toadette = Your opinion
Luigi = Luigi

Saying a game was rushed isn't an "opinion", just an observation/comment on the production process and release schedule. A product can be rushed to market and still be of good quality. For instance, I thought Wind Waker was absolutely great, but it was definitely rushed and a tad incomplete. But still mostly excellent.

Tip Tup is a Banjo character, so it's highly unlikely Nintendo owns him.

Well, I dunno. I just think that not only the tracks are so detailed, but the gameplay is so TIGHT (despite balancing options), also the graphics are incredible and the animation is just crazy good...

I just can't call it rushed if it has all that.

Now, I understand that the experience may be a little barebones. Not a lot of modes and the battle mode lacks arenas. The UI is too simple and there's a lack of options. All of that should be tackled will heaps of periodic DLC, but, Nintendo.

The only thing about MK8 that makes it feel "rushed" is the lazy Battle Mode.

Otherwise the game is polished to hell and back. It's extremely detailed and brimming with personality. It sports all of those MKTV features as well which are rather incredible. The courses and racing mechanics are all as great as ever and quite fine-tuned. Anyone upset by the item balance should probably understand that balancing a game like this is likely one of the biggest challenges of development.

There are some issues with the game but the quality is mostly there where it counts the most. If it seems to lack features or something it's probably a good indication that Nintendo knew where they wanted to put their focus.

Also, you can't outright say that the game was MEANT to have more modes, more robust single player, more options otherwise, etc. You can feel that these things are "missing" and that Nintendo omitted them to get the game out in time, but it's also a possibility that the game wasn't going to have any of that anyway.

A lot of MK8's problems as a product can be remedied with patches or DLC if Nintendo cares. Otherwise it's a good package for what it does offer.

You would think, but I remember asking mods at the Nintendo's own forum back then and they said it was just for Timber to "have style". It meant nothing. :'(

False advertising if you ask me.

I agree with those saying that MK8 is rushed and quite a disappointment. It's pretty damn bare-bones for a game that was advertised as being "mind blowing" and "amazing". I would love to see a Diddy Kong Racing sequel that could potentially blow MK8 out of the water.
