I thought his face with covered in a mask with him looking out of the things that look like goggles.
I find out his eyes are below that and mouth/chin are below that hidden by the mask. I somehow couldn't tell when playing it on the SNES.

That one I figured out from the side view.

Oh man so much this, I still see him as the guy on the left, even though I know it's the guy on the right.
Stuff like this is why I love pixel art (And, to a degree, the low poly art of the 32-bit era). A lot of the art was seeing what was being represented, not what literally was in front of you. It required a lot of imagination at times.
I am always amused by this as I never had a problem with the sprites in question (shadow or agahim) hahaha but I can see why some people think that way

Seems weird to me. These would have been some large goggles.
When I was a kid I thought the Goombas in Super Mario World were tomato monsters. Now apparently they're considered an alternate species of Goomba.

Picture made my day and I never played this game.

I only actually saw the eyeball and jawline in this within the past couple of years and it ruined it forever.
I do not know what I am supposed to be seeing in them?

I defend my original interpretation of Agahnim as I did not see yellow hair covering his eyes, but a sickly old bald man with thick brows shadowing his dark lidded eyes like the Emperor:

I have a tough time seeing Shadow any other way. I kind of get how people could see it differently, but wouldn't that make his proportions wildly different from all other characters?
