Microsoft shutting down Xbox Entertainment Studios (TV studio, 200 employees)

Now Phil is repeating it:

Microsoft is the productivity and platform company for a mobile-first and cloud-first world, and games are the single biggest digital life category in a mobile-first world.

Something is up. The Xbox One as is does not meet this goal.

You only get one shot at making your console reveal outstanding. You fuck up at it, & it sticks with consumers, just like with the PS3 in the U.S. & with Wii U.

It doesn't matter how many "180's" a company does afterwards.

Yeah it a closed case, Sony is going to take it. But if that means that MS has to fight and the XO ends up as awesome as PS3 that'd be nice for me as a gamer. Again, sucks for MS but that's their problem I'm just a consumer.

This is probably all for the best. Going by the scripts for MS's E3 Press Conferences I wouldn't exactly put alot of faith in any original television programming coming out of them.

It doesn't seem clear at all, actually. He said everything you mentioned and in the same breath mentioned mobile as the future of entertainment. He said he's committed to Xbox, but that could mean a lot of things.

They are doing both, simple as that. The fact of the matter is that they plainly state that they are committed to Xbox and it's fans and will be putting more of a focus on games. I take that statement for what it is. And going by E3, their recent moves and even further statements that reflect the same, I think it is a safe bet.

Xbox One SLIM, incoming...

but all jokes aside, I don't understand the point of shutting it down, now now don't jump down my throat, I understand the business aspect of it, but that is your system, your system is video games and tv, that is what it was made for, that is what is built to handle, to multi task those two very things....with out it, with out those extra's, isn't it just a weaker system then? I mean yeah it could still put out games, but those games could have looked and ran better, if all this extra stuff wasn't the focus to begin with. But it was the focus.

Someone knows what i'm saying, please say it in a more eloquent manner

edit: On top of all that....to think about all the people who got let go today, it is just really sad, coorporate world...it just sucks

Wait cant they still do their own shows but put them on services like Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime?

on the Phil mobile thing i wonder if they are going to release an Xbox phone like the rumored Surface phone.

Again, what does this mean for Quantum Break? Wouldn't it be much too expensive for a game studio to develop a series and a game simultaneously?

I'm joking. It is a stupid feature, though.

You're joking but its still stupid... how does that work? I mean it was obviously some hyperbole in your wording, but you obviously weren't joking.

Have you ever used it out of curiosity? Its a very useful feature and I think that nearly all Xbox One users would agree with me especially now they've added an achievements app. Its useful for parties, GameDVR, twitch streaming, looking at apps that support it (which is a lot), I like it a lot its also pretty much a throwback to the blades on the 360 at launch which people liked...

Again, what does this mean for Quantum Break? Wouldn't it be much too expensive for a game studio to develop a series and a game simultaneously?

I suspect it means nothing for Quantum Break. Sam Lake tweeted about Gamescom a few days back and they have said they are continuing with some things so that will be included I would guess if its not already done

Eh, He's saying that games are important in a "mobile-first" world, when at the same time the current Xbox business is pretty much anti-mobile. The Xbox One is most likely safe, but I wouldn't be too sure that Microsoft isn't trying to reinvent the Xbox brand in the upcoming years. And it'd sadly make sense, too, since there's not a lot of money to be made in the console space if you aren't leading the pack. In the current generation we've got currently two losers, same was true for the last generation (financially speaking). Not really the smartest business when you are hoping to become more efficient in the future.

weren't they filming the quatnum break tv show, oh knowsss

no they werent and it means nothing. its all being done by Remedy. its not a tv show that people will get to watch if they dont own the game. its simply an evolution of all the tv lite stuff they did in Alan Wake with their Night Springs show.

Ya pretty simple and getting more simple by the day as they remove these extra outside and none game related things.

Though I don't think MS is going for a mobile device that would also be something interesting. Especially if somehow all games were compatible and all that crazy stuff.

It was a stupid idea ever since they announced it.
Xbox owners don't want original programming.

I think Microsoft thought that a gaming console possibly wouldn't work in todays market, i mean thats what stupid analysts kept telling us in recent years but the PS4 has shown that people still want a games console, not an 'all in one' entertainment system.

Although it sucks for the people losing their jobs, i'm glad that everyone in the business now knows that gaming consoles are still relevant.

Mobile-first is such a weird thing for Phil to even be saying. It can only mean stuff for iOS and Android unless they see a massive growth in Windows mobile.

I can only imagine there's a lot of sweating going on in the Xbox division over how the next year or two goes.

AH. that makes sense. Thanks.

Though, this mobile-first, cloud-first world talk sounds really troubling for me.

I feel bad for the employees, but happy with the refocus of the Xbox division on games.

I really hope they relaunch their sports division, and/or develop more studios and IPs. They def have the ability to open and launch new studios.

Sounds like a good business decision.

Hopefully the tv crap ms pushed is gone now

I had hoped they would can the halo tv series also, seems like a stupid idea imo

I think those go hand-in-hand. Xbox Phone, to me, still seems like a likely future, with an Xbox set-top box replacing standard consoles.

They definitely won't make a new handheld. Mobile-first to me sounds like Xbox-branded games and apps for smartphones.

And cloud-first continues along with XB1. I get the feeling it's just a company statement and people are reading into it too much. If anything the layoffs not being directed at XB1 game development and instead at TV/Sports/TV is a commitment to XB1 as a games device. That's really the only silver lining in all the layoff news. :(

How hilarious would it be if Rare ends up making iOS games.

If they put out a few more bombs I can see them making mobile games at least. At this point their franchises are way more important than the actual studio... but they still make pretty graphics. I hope for a resurrection.

Wow... that did not last long.

Their E3 conference wasn't a disaster IMO. Had a similar format to this year's E3 for that matter (just games) but didn't have as much of a quick pace.

Their E3 this year was total garbage compared to last year's imo... and last year's wasn't exactly great but at least there were a lot of games announced that actually came out that year and most of them showed actual gameplay.

People dont realize that Windows Phone has Xbox support already, complete with achievements and cross platform saves.

What? Their were plenty of games that had gameplay for this year and next year.

They are just shifting as much as possible to the cloud and games are about 90% of sales on mobile devices so I think they'll go straight in there. Online features up to your eyeballs, Xbox Video etc. available on everything, crappy smartglass features. Expanded experiences on mobile devices.

We still need base devices so Xbox One should be fine but I expect layers of extra crap that don't add much to the games.
