NPD Sales Results for June 2014 [Up3: All Hardware (June/LTD), Top 10 Software SKUs]

But is the Xbox One doomed? From what I gather it is selling well- just not at the fantastic levels of the PS4.

The problem is that you're still including the huge launch.

After December, sales dropped precipitously. In 2014, it's doing worse month-to-month than the first 8 years of the Xbox 360.

Having all the 180s, layoffs at the TV group, and the Kinect unbundling in less than a year is not a device that's "selling well".

PS4 games outsell PS3 games. People are now moving from the old device to the new device.
360 games outsell XB1 games. Those users are hesitant to adopt the new device.

Granted, the Xbox 360 was a beast, but that momentum (which was a lot of factors, but mostly luck), is now lost.

Building on that, Microsoft positioned themselves last gen to rely heavily on 3rd parties and online XBL revenue. Both of those are going away now that people have to pay for PS+ AND 3rd party games look and sell better on the PS4.

Microsoft doesn't have a Nintendo-quality 1st party to fallback on. They may have a handful of interesting titles in the coming months, but that is NOT enough to support the console in the long term and grow the userbase.

The Xbox division at Microsoft, the "Entertainment" one, had its profits masked by distributing a huge amount of Android patent royalties to it. With the loss of revenue caused by the R&D, plus the lowered sales forecasts, it's becoming far costlier to maintain than it was before. And worse still, the 'price drop' to $399 failed to drum up any interest.

You should read up a bit more on the game. And stop being a smart ass. That only works if you are knowledgeable on the topic being discussed. This is not an HD compilation of Silent Hill. A ton of work has been put into this. Read up on it, you would be impressed how crazy they went with this.

But Halo 3 & Halo 4 aren't exactly getting proper remakes. Only Halo 2 is, & Halo 1 Remastered is basically a port off of Xbox 360.

Too bad about Watch_Dogs, will only encourage Ubisoft to abuse their formula even more.

I would rather see Call of Duty at #1 than an Ubisoft open world game.

Why are you guys surprised at the Vita numbers? Like 15K a month...thats fricking awesome for Vita standards. I know Vita Fans want it to do well but the thing is doomed till Sony pulls the plug. Its Sega's Revenge. Just deal with it.

Anyhow I predict XB1 numbers to begin picking up after 1 year. It just got a price drop and once Halo 5 comes, PS4 hardware better be ready. I dont think U4 will sell as many units if both release on Fall 2015. I feel XB1 is doing good but not gangbusters as PS4 but people shouldnt talk like it wont catch up or so.

WiiU numbers look good right? Deserves some sales with MK8 and then Smash.

BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma ( Ported to Vita )
Xblaze Code: Embryo ( Visual Novel, also on PS3 )

an update on the failure brigade now that it's halfway through the year

wii u ytd: 449,000
wii u jan-may 2013: 302,000

vita ytd: ~129,000-135,000
vita jan-may 2013: 164,000
vita feb-may 2012: 633,000 (launch was in february)

so aside from may, vita has been performing far worse than it did last year (45% drop from last june). may's vita sales account for about 42-43% of its yearly sales. wii u's june accounts for about 31% of its yearly sales, but sales were already up year over year.

I’m merely saying that anyone who wants to die on their sword over this 30%+ sales advantage are going to be fighting an uphill battle over the next 10 years…

This is the first like non launch window month for the Wii u where I think you can say the sales are actually good and not have to caveat it in some way. If it holds for next month--obviously a big if--it could easily best xbone.

It's impressive to me how quickly and decisively Sony turned things around. I mean, sure, for the global mass market the ps4 is a far more appealing product, but even in the US where they weren't even competitive people jumped ship fast. Network effects of Xbox live appear ambiguous. It's unclear how badly the system could have been doing without xbl and titanfall. Obviously the "me and my 10 friends" and the people that use that canard continue to embarrass themselves.

And now for some random predictions. I will inscribe these on the wedding ring I give to aquamarine:

1. Sunset overdrive will be the latest in a long line of insomniac's "valuable self-owned IP". I just don't see the game hitting at all. Developer is not a big name, the art style is just not there for the bro audience, not enough Xbones out there, and super crowded October. Needed to be out in September. It will probably launch with like 235k and someone will post "what an amazing tie ratio!!" And then "congrats insomniac and Microsoft!!!" The same way one would post congratulations Microsoft for stuffing the channel last year.

2. Sony won't update the firmware until fall. No one will change buying behavior but there will be yelping on here. Some will say "but Sony isn't making any moves!!!"

3. The last of us ps4 should debut around...150k? Not a huge success. Basically enough to make it worthwhile and ltd will be good but nothing ground breaking.

4. Mario kart 8 actually will be the lowest selling Mario kart in a while and polygon will publish a huge manifesto on their correctness.

5. Sony has established a dominant position in terms of software. I predict very few if any third party exclusives on Xbox going forward. Still Phil spencer will tweet "games!" Next May and start an avatar feud. Yoshida will make an unfunny joke about the HTC one for the third time.

6. The generation is decided but it will be interesting to guess when xbone passes Wii u. Maybe December?

7. I think this really does count as a price drop and not just a sku change. First the barrier to entry did legitimately drop. Second I'm not sure new 499 bundles are still being manufactured. And third even if they are no one gives a flying fuck about kinect so I don't see why we have to pretend anyone cared before.

hehe ;-)

Of course GAF rushes immediately to unfounded conclusions. We haven't even gotten the full numbers yet, and the consoles haven’t even been out a full year, and yet GAF is still ready to proclaim this generation's winner.

From last December:

So The One won the most important market.

And with Brazil and Australia, they have the most important EU markets as well.

The age of Sony is done.

Sony has been picking apart any strength Microsoft had. They don't have an early head-start, they don't have the third party advantage any longer, they don't have the superior hardware, and now that Kinect is no longer the focus they don't really have much that differentiates themselves like the Wii did last generation. They still have a more robust online service and a huge investment in servers but does what matter much?

For Microsoft to put pressure on the PS4 it will cost them. Either in more game investments or with a price reduction. I guess that's a good thing either way for consumers.
