I think with the right marketing, Wonderbook could be a hit for Sony. You already have famous writers like J.K. Rowling supporting it, and with the announced Disney partnership, Move and Wonderbook are poised to ride the success of PS4 and make an amazing comeback.
too obvious?
Yeah they should find a way to make wonderbook compatible with Vita.
Vita would be saved.
I love my Vita :(

Just because it had games that appealed to a variety of non-gamer demographics doesn't mean the console was successful because it successfully appealed to them. Proto-Blue Ocean games like Singstar were a tiny proportion of the PS2's software sales.

PS2 was mainstream from launch day. Largely because of the DVD player. I remember Ben Affleck on Conan (or was it Letterman?) complaining that Sony was faking shortages to drum up publicity.

The PS2 was the best DVD player on the market for a very short amount of time. It didn't get to 150 million worldwide because it was a state of the art DVD player.

You are getting banned. How does that make you feel? Are you frustrated with Gaf, the mods, the other people in the thread? Are you frustrated with yourself? Do you feel some other emotion? I am curious.

....this is a bit unnecessary dude

but lol

This has actually been a remarkable weekend for threads on NeoGAF. Between Naked Snake's cock ticks, Last of Us Remastered topic with the demakes all the way down to tiger handheld generation, with this NPD topic and the nuttery it is shaking from the trees

this has been for me the most memorable weekend on GAF in ages

Any particular reason you believe the PS1/PSX appealed to mainstream consumers? PS2, Wii and DS obviously did. Others could be argued and perhaps even the PS1 could be argued as such, I just don't see it. Maybe it's ability to play CDs I guess?

Gran Turismo appealed to people that like cars, then there's stuff like Parappa the Rapper, the sports games, DDR, Tomb Raider, all sorts of licensed games. There was definitely a significant mainstream presence on PSX.

Sure that was an added benefit but what explains the absurdly high attach ratio?

Or that the best-selling titles for the system were the likes of GTA, Gran Turismo, Final Fantasy, Medal of Honor, and Metal Gear Solid. The PS2 was a very standard core gamer console that sold 150 million units because it had no real competition and because it was on the market for much longer than usual because its successor was overpriced.

You never asked this keep making stuff up. Its also not what bishop quoted.

Well, I tried to help you out with a quick search on my end.

I see one post guesstimating 4,5 sold. The consensus I've been seeing in that thread is 4.2, so you may need to do some more digging to prove the "GAF 4.5 concensus" point.

And I don't see anything about 500k in the UK number, though I could have missed it.

You may want to link directly to your evidence though and not 1st page of a huge thread though to make things easier to see your points.

Edit

Oh, man...

That made me cringe a bit.

Maybe he should ask again in the XB1 update preview thread.

Isleofsancroy just shot himself in the foot.

I don't know how much the rest of you know about Neogaf culture (I'm an expert), but honor and shame are huge parts of it. It's not like it is in Reddit where you can become successful by not backing your arguments with evidence. If you fail to provide adequate evidence on Neogaf, you bring shame to yourself, and the only way to get rid of that shame is repentance.

What this means is the Neogaf public, after hearing about this, is not going to want to take Isleofsancroy's arguments seriously, nor will they let him become full member. This is HUGE. You can laugh all you want, but Isleofsancroy has alienated entire Neogaf with this move.

Isleofsancroy, publicly apologize and cancel your argument or you can kiss your account goodbye.
_____________________________________________________________

To me funniest part of all this has been Isleofsancroy accusing almost everyone of miss-reading/understanding his posts.

Isleofsancroy, if everyone is unable to understand what the hell you are talking about, then may be something is wrong with your posts and not us...

The 4.2 estimates seem to just be taking Microsoft's 3 million sell through number for 2013 and adding the 1.2 million sell-in number for 2014.

This what I asked for.

I didn't misread anything and I'm still waiting for your link to the UK numbers as well as a link to the GAF consensus estimate of 4.5 mio by the end of March.
Direct links.

It may look like that, but it seems fairly accurate anyway so whatever.

(also shh hold this discussion for a bit)

I believe that Sony's marketing strategy was aimed at a wider audience than the average video game consumer at the time. The ads were edgier, the price was inviting, there was a gradually building library of games covering many diverse genres, and more.

There were more people in my social circle at that time that were interested in a PlayStation than anything else-- and many of them hadn't owned a console before. I understand that anecdotal evidence is about as strong as a wet napkin in these discussions, but hey.

As someone who has been fortunate enough to experience all of these console generations first-hand, rather than just reading about them-- I find the rise in popularity and pop culture of video games in the late 1990s and the 2000s to be really fascinating stuff.

Titanic was called the Ship of Dreams, and it was. It really was.
I don't quite get the PS4.

I'm not gonna purchase one yet, but since it's a self fulfilling prophecy in terms of where the games go, with these sales, eventually I'll have to buy one too.

An insanely long lifespan and the death-grip they had on 3rd parties, imo. Gamecube had none, Xbox was still a fledgling brand, and the PC market was dormant. Pretty much the whole industry was putting out games on PS2.

Thanks for the input. I actually never owned a PS1 back in the day as my own history goes something like Sega Saturn -> N64 -> PS2. I wonder how rare it was to own a sega saturn back in the day considering that US LTD 0_0

lol @ me being quoted of all people by isle

It does explain a lot, knowing SwiftDeath is the heart of NeoGAF's soul

and congrats Isleofsancroy for avoiding the fire! You're a real neoGAF member now :D

I posted direct links were I got the info from above. If they are incorrect I admit I may have read them out of context.

Regarding UK sales, you were saying it was toward 500k in 2014 alone, those are LTD (as in, since launch).

And SwiftDeath will be pleased to learn that he is GAF consensus.

Also, on that page alone you'll see a number of 4.2 (with two 4.4 estimates) I believe.

So around 4.2 million sold total?

So 4.2 million consoles sold through March?

4.2 million then

It would seem so .

So 5 million shipped, 4.2 million sold?

This will be an informative thread to be sure.

4.2 million total from 2013- this reports final recorded date...5 million stated shipped, so about 800k on shelves?

Hrm.

So, the numbers are: 4.2m vs 7m sold to consumers?

4.2 million sold to customers then?
well, looks like the Xbox One will have to wait until the holidays to pass Wii U
(or maybe it'll clip it after September)

Maybe you were mixed up ;)

Now that you know how to look for source, can you give me the link that shows 360 reached 84 millions earlier than PS3? ;-)

What do you mean "you people"?

I will not give sources you can find on Google in literally 4 seconds. Dont forget you made the ps3 outselling the 360 claim first.

I'm pretty sure the gameplan is to sarcastically berate them a bit then maybe go play some Destiny

And since I'm clearly Gaf's consensus now...

You're not, but I too read that thread and 4.5 million isn't an unreasonable number to pick from it. I was thinking a little lower 4.3, but 4.5 isn't crazy going by it. What is GAF consensus then?

In this thread you have to back up your statements as we've just seen.

Dont forget you made the ps3 outselling the 360 claim first.
I did not. I just checked again, my first post about this topic was asking you for source.

I didnt make the claim he did. Please be quiet.
Then you can easily find the post where I did.
