Four more games added this week, all caught up going over the current releases too.
First up,
Space Pirates and Zombies, which is probably a bit of a unknown gem. It got a few notable GOTYs but likely flew under most people's radar. As you can see from Zero-Crescent's post (and the quotes) above, it's got a bit of a Star Control feel to it and offers quite a bit of changing gameplay for the price (sometimes it's on sale for just a few bucks). People tend to really enjoy it, so definitely worth a shot if you're interested in space games or Elite-like gameplay (some RPG elements with plot sprinkled in like in Star Control). Potentially quite a bit of gameplay too, depending on how methodical you play, some people get over 50 hours out of this game.
OlliOlli is next, and this is one that surprised me (I didn't have high hopes after a quick glance at the screenshots), but I guess it does what it sets out to very well... that is make a challenging yet rewarding auto-runner type game, with much more to master than your typical iOS runner. Custom made levels (instead of endless randomly created hazards) ensure that you really have to work to master every part to them (memorization of the layout is mentioned a few times).
Then to older releases,
Teslagrad is another that was regardly highly when reviewing comments posted in various threads. A mix of action / puzzle / platforming, which adds a lot of variety to the game, and boss battles that some find a bit hard, but at least the checkpoint system is noted as being very fair if that worries you. Like many platformers, it doesn't overstay its welcome, so if you enjoy them you can probably squeeze another like this in if you haven't already.
Temple of Elemental Evil is the last to make the list, and while this doesn't have the recognition of Icewind Dale, Baldur's Gate 2 or Planescape Torment, it does have quite amazing impressions of the actual combat, which is generally what you're doing most of the game, beginning town aside. The turn based combat is regarded so highly (maybe best implementation of D&D in a video game), that it almost offsets the rest of the game being regarded much less favourably. The original release had all sorts of bugs and problems, but luckily the community has been pretty amazing and the Circle of Eight mod in particular does some really great stuff to the game, not to be missed.
As for what didn't make the cut this week, we have a couple:
-
Gods will be Watching (early impressions seem to be on the positive side, needs more time to gather additional impressions though)
-
Black Mirror 2 (not enough positive impressions)
-
Unrest (not enough impressions, revisit in a few weeks)
-
Forgotten Realms Demon Stone (not enough positive impressions)
-
Dungeons & Dragons: Dragonshard (not enough positive impressions)
