STAMFORD, Conn.--(Business Wire)--WWE (NYSE:WWE) today announced financial results for its second quarter ended June 30, 2014. For the quarter, the Company reported a Net loss of $14.5 million, or $0.19 per share, compared to Net income of $5.2 million, or $0.07 per share, in the second quarter last year. Excluding items affecting comparability, adjusted Net loss was $13.5 million, or $0.18 per share in the current year quarter, compared to Net income of $5.2 million, or $0.07 per share, in the second quarter last year. WWE Network reached 700,000 subscribers at quarter end.

“WWE's core business metrics remain strong, and WWE Network continues to be the single greatest opportunity to transform WWE’s business model. During the quarter, we developed plans to make WWE Network available globally starting August 12, and completed a long-term content deal in Canada with Rogers Communications," stated Vince McMahon, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. "Additionally, we identified efficiencies that will improve our 2015 OIBDA outlook by $30 million. Based on these initiatives, we are optimistic about our potential to drive long-term growth.”

“As we expanded WWE Network to 700,000 subscribers, our earnings performance surpassed our guidance, which targeted a Net loss ranging from $15 million to $18 million. Our key metrics continued to show strength as average North American attendance increased 11%, representing the fourth consecutive quarter of year-over-year growth. Raw and SmackDown TV ratings increased 5% and 3%, respectively, marking SmackDown's 7th quarter of growth among the past 8 quarters,” added George Barrios, Chief Strategy & Financial Officer.

“We identified efficiencies across WWE, which include a 7% reduction in staff, and improved our 2015 OIBDA outlook by $30 million. We developed plans to make WWE Network available in over 170 countries, and entered a 10-year deal that provides for the WWE Network launch as a traditional a-la-carte Pay-TV channel in Canada and renews our television licensing agreement for Raw and SmackDown. The progress in our strategic initiatives reinforces our view that successful execution of our WWE Network strategy can generate meaningful economic returns.”

WWE Network Update

The quarter was highlighted by the ongoing ramp up of WWE Network, which attracted gross additions of 161,000 subscribers since WrestleMania on April 6th and ended the quarter at 700,000 subscribers, reflecting a net addition of 33,000 subscribers. To drive ongoing subscriber growth, the Company continues to execute a five-part strategy that includes making the network available in new geographies, creating new content, expanding distribution platforms, developing new features and enhancing its marketing. Critical aspects of this strategy include making WWE Network available in international markets and completing a new partnership with Rogers Communications, which provides the rights to distribute the network in Canada.

Customer Engagement: Viewer data indicates that, on average, 91% of subscribers access the network at least once per week and use 2.5 devices to consume network content. Moreover, consumer research indicates that 90% of subscribers are satisfied with WWE Network (with 51% extremely satisfied and 39% somewhat satisfied).

International Availability: The Company plans to make the U.S. version of WWE Network available on an over-the-top basis starting August 12th in over 170 countries and territories, including Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Singapore, Mexico, Spain and the Nordics, among others. The network is expected to be live in the U.K. by October 2014. Plans for the network in Italy, UAE, Germany, Japan, India, China, Thailand and Malaysia will be communicated at a later date.

Canada: The Company has entered into a new 10-year partnership with Rogers Communications, a leading media enterprise in Canada, under a landmark television programming and WWE Network agreement. The partnership facilitates the launch of WWE Network as a traditional a-la-carte Pay-TV channel in Rogers’ cable systems with a preview beginning August 12 and thereafter through other Pay-TV providers outside Rogers’ footprint. The partnership also renews Rogers’ license of the Raw and SmackDown television programs, and grants Rogers distribution rights to the Company's pay-per-views.

Consumer Marketing: To enhance awareness, additional marketing investment is planned around the popular SummerSlam pay-per-view event in August. The Company will also introduce new payment plans in August, including a $19.99 monthly plan (with no commitment) and an upfront one-time payment option for its existing $9.99 per month offering (with six month commitment).

Other Developments: Content coming to WWE Network includes The Monday Night War and WWE Rivalries, the most recent addition to the network’s program schedule, both of which provide a documentary-style look at some of the greatest moments in WWE history. Expanding current distribution, WWE Network is launching on several smart TVs and Blu-ray players in mid-August. The Company also plans to deliver a new "resume play" feature later this year.

Rogers Communications and WWE today announced a historic 10-year broadcast and multimedia agreement, making Rogers the exclusive distributor of WWE’s flagship programming in Canada through 2024. The deal extends WWE’s current programming on Sportsnet 360 and includes the right to distribute WWE Network as a premium linear channel, with a preview beginning August 12.

Rogers will be the exclusive distribution partner of all WWE pay-per-view events throughout Canada and will sponsor an application to the CRTC to bring the popular WWE Network to Canada. Starting August 12, a preview of WWE Network content, including live WWE pay-per-view events, groundbreaking original series, live in-ring action, reality shows and a video-on-demand library, will be available on a subscription basis on Rogers Channel 512. Rogers will offer this WWE Network content preview subscription to all cable, satellite and IPTV providers across Canada.

Fans in Canada will receive more WWE programming than ever before through Rogers' cable and digital assets. Highlights from the new deal also include national rights for Raw, SmackDown and WWE Main Event on Sportsnet 360, Sportsnet NOW and Rogers Anyplace TV.

They need to put it in other countries, and they need to have it include live RAW/SD broadcasts.

It'll make its subscriber numbers.

Aiii

So not worth it
The second they get into other countries, this whole thing may be a moot point.

They should have made it a worldwide release from the start.

Or at the very least a release in every country they do not have individual deals for (and there's plenty), at the very least in Europe where internet connections can easily stream US content in HD.

At least they're doing that now.

I'd love for it to come to Australia, just so I don't have to also subscribe to Unblock-Us.

I'm still happy with the network even at around AU$17. I can't watch them live, but the convenience of on-demand PPV alone is worth it.

Just please fix the damn media player already. When you move the timeline thing it'll always be slightly to the left. Sometimes all the buttons stop working and lately Flash in Chrome always crashes on the WWE Network.

[edit] Put the Youtube videos on there too.

I posted this in the other thread and I don't care:

You are fucking kidding me WWE.... your only going to make it a fucking TV channel for FUCKING ROGERS!?

Fuck this company.

Wait:

THATS why. Fuck the bullshit CRTC.

So no network over the internet?????

why?

We're just speculating now based on the Rogers deal to bring the Network via their cable package. I hope that doesn't mean we aren't getting an option via the Internet.

I will just have to continue going the unblock-us route, if so.

The "exclusive" has me worried.

I know WWE was holding out the WCW Nitro's for a staggered release, but they really need to just upload all the Raw's and Nitros for the Monday Night War.

WWE Network can only come to Canada is they agree that 20% of the daily programming is Mountie matches.

I do wonder if the Rogers free preview for August means EVERYONE will get Summerslam for free who is a Rogers subscriber.

I imagine they will black that out.

Digital assets? So is Rogers going to make sure you can only get the online Network with Roger's internet? Could that even work?

Ugh, this is some ugly bullshit if it turns out to be true.

For a company that NEEDS subscribers, they are fucking things up even more for themselves. The money from Rogers must have been good. They should have just given that money to the Jays payroll instead.

FUCK!

Surely you are also using it for the added benefit of Worldwide Netflix access, right?

...No? I barely have enough time to watch just WWE as it is. Since the Network hit I only watch PPVs from the current product and nothing else.

I actually don't know anything about Netflix.

I guess this has to do with TV and licensing rights, but I wish they'd bring the RAW and Smackdown replays to the Network sooner. I'd subscribe for that in a heartbeat.

Might just mean the programming available through Sportsnets website. When The Score switched over to 360, there was nowhere to watch online for a while.

This is really ugly. If I was Vince I would just scrap the whole entire thing... or bring raw/smackdown to the network and say fuck cable.

This could even go beyond the WWE's little network. Imagine if HBO wanted to do something like this, would they have to go through the CRTC too? Could Rogers or Bell buy exclusive right's to have the online network on they internet plans only?

Now the pink slips go out. I feel for the wrestlers and employees. They must be biting their fingernails down to the knuckle.

7,99 USD and you get access to every region that Netflix is available on mate, pretty good deal, might want to give the free month trial a go while you're still on unblock-us.

Isn't this similar to the net neutrality stuff everyone is concerned about? I haven't been following that closely but I thought that was the gist of it.

They brought out Hogan during the last UK tour to shill the Network and it's still not available here yet...

I thought it was decent during that free trial week but they should really learn the lessons of Netflix and just put up everything at once, not weekly. Total Divas season 1 airing weekly when season 2 has already finished on TV is just silly and their digital-only releases like Legends House didn't ever need to be on a weekly schedule.

I feel like that's one of the things holding the Network back but yeah, their hands are probably tied due to their TV deals and stuff. If I could watch Raw/Smackdown live or at least the next day on the Network, I'd sign up asap.

Just got back into Wrestling. I'm thinking about paying for the app. I tried it during the free week and it was pretty good.

Now Canada you don't have to wait for the earth to rotate on a 47-degree axis so the stars can smuck the sky and create a equalax to get the app. Great

Even though the network is kinda crap at the moment, its worth it for pay per views. They really need to get all Raws/Nitros up though. Every pay per view ever loses a lot of appeal without being able to watch the build to it. Also they need the ECW "promotions" like Born to be Wired.

They should have launched the network with more content. They didn't need every year of Raw, Nitro or Smackdown available, but at least enough to show that they were serious about it.

The worst thing they could have done was advertise attitude era and Nitro and launch with a handful of episodes from several shows.

Oh, wait....they did that.

Why do they even need a distribution deal for Canada? The network is on the internet. THE INTERNET. Just do what you're doing for America... EVERYWHERE. I do not know what's the deal with this slow roll out unless they are trying to get cash grabs from international communication companies.

Wow. I am speechless over that Canada/Rogers & WWE Agreement.

Starting August 12, a preview of WWE Network content, including live WWE pay-per-view events, groundbreaking original series, live in-ring action, reality shows and a video-on-demand library, will be available on a subscription basis on Rogers Channel 512.

So we're not actually getting the proper WWE Network. We're just getting a WWE cable channel, like what the WWE was pushing for to begin with?

I don't understand, it hasn't been six months since launch yet, how could every addition not be a net addition for now?

I imagine they're counting trial subscriptions that didn't stick around.

Which would be very painful because that would mean since Wrestlemania, only 161,000 tried the Network and of that, they only retained 33,000.

Ouch.

33K is ghastly. They can't go back to their previous PPV model anymore, now that basically every provider has dumped them, and they are loosing money hand over fist.

If the next investor call (which would have the number from Summerslam included) isn't SIGNIFICANTLY higher (we are talking 150-200K increase), then I don't know what to say anymore. WWE isn't going to die, but there will be massive changes. Would not be surprised to see stockholders take dramatic steps.

If there was ever a "shot themselves in the foot" moment, this is it.

the funny thing is, you'd think nothing would be sacred at this point when it comes to the actual product
