Are there other obscure Japan-only games like this and Murasame Castle they could pull characters from?

YES

Shin Onigashima
Famicom Detective Club
Yuyuki
Joy Mecha Fight
Captain Rainbow
Sutte Hakkun
Satella Walker
Panel de Pon
Sakura Momoko no Ukiuki Carnival
Zangeki no Reginleiv (not sure if Nintendo owns this one, but they published it)

That was strangely stressful. I had to sacrifice Chibi-Robo... ;_;

That's actually very interesting. I haven't heard of a good handful of these before. Looks like Miyamoto was involved in some of them.

I hope some of these get represented in some way in Smash. It is a celebration of Nintendo history, after all.

I'm both terrified and amazed that you had such a reaction image to post, and so quickly.

I love Chibi-Robo to death, but I struggle to figure how he could be playable without making him bigger, which kinda defeats his chibiness. (There are lots of other characters on the list I wanted too, but I tried to get the most out of my points.)

Outside of a very small set of supporters as a backup for Takamaru, it's not really a big deal. People seem happy he's in at all.

I think it's more fair to say that this group is the group that believes we're due for a "retro." Prince Sable is just about Mike Jones tier with regards to region exclusivity and how long ago he hails from. For him to jump to playable would have been a massive surprise.

Boss Doggie

all my loli wolf companions are so moe
So this is a present for us Sakurai-san!

anyway why do people call him Prince Sable when it's actually a title (it's more apt to call him Sable Prince or Prince of Sable)

also is that a new stage

That is more fair to say. I wouldn't know where to begin with retro characters after Kid Icarus so sorry. I misspoke.

Oh, you bet there are! Some of my personal favorites, most of which are from the Famicom Disk Systel (just like Mysterious Murasame Castle). That thing is FULL of old, obscure Nintendo gems. And the other two are just Super Famicom games; this is ignoring a bunch of GBA and Gamecube stuff that's mostly forgotten at this point.

8hQy2sum.jpg

Donbe & Hikari - The main characters of Shin Onigashima, based on Momotaro (the Peach Boy) and Princess Kaguya (the Bamboo Princess) respectively. Donbe is the "dumb but strong" one, with Hikari as the "smart but weak" foil. Shin Onigashima is a text-based adventure, so they're essentially an open book to adapt; as a playable character, I think they'd work best as something between Pokemon Trainer and Rosalina, with the player controlling Hikari and ordering around the wild Donbe.

[Protagonist] & Ayumi Tachibana - From Famicom Detective Club, the nameless protagonist is the player character, while Ayumi is his partner/assistant. They both work at a detective agency, as the title suggests, where they investigate clues and solve murders. It'd probably be one or the other, and I'm not sure how either would really play as a full character. I'd probably push for Ayumi as an Assist Trophy... probably wandering into trouble, which tends to happen in the game itself.

Goku & Others - From Yuyuki, a loose adaptation of Journey to the West, from what I can tell. Another series that I don't know much about, but like Donbe & Hikari, there's a TON of potential for movesets based on the original myth alone. His magic staff, his transformations, his general martial arts style... I think Goku would be an awesome addition.

Dion, Max & Jack - The main trio of Marvelous: Another Treasure Island, Eiji Aonuma's first title and the game that earned him the attention of Nintendo's bigwigs. Honestly I don't know much about it; it sort of a point-and-click adventure, but from a top-down perspective. I'm not sure if there's any potential for these guys... a pointer finger that selects items and characters, which the trio then goes to grab/harass? Maybe?

jp2uSmum.jpg

Hakkun - Another one I don't know much about; he's the main character of Sutte Hakkun, an inventive little puzzle game. It involves him sucking up liquid with his nose, which endows blocks with certain properties... it's hard to explain, you should look up a video. Lots of moveset potential there, not unlike Lip, who's non-obscure enough that I didn't bother listing her here.

Not Japan only, but I think a character from Pro Wrestling would be a great retro revival character.

We don't have any true grapplers in the series either. (I know some have certain qualities.) Fighter Hayabusa would be really cool, or Star Man.

That said, why are people asking for a new playable retro character? It's not like Sakurai has to fill a quota or anything.
Because they're fun, and give the roster some variety and freshness?

That could be really interesting. I like it!

So this is a present for us Sakurai-san!

anyway why do people call him Prince Sable when it's actually a title (it's more apt to call him Sable Prince or Prince of Sable)

It's easier to process I guess. That and the whole "large majority of Earth doesn't know much about this game" leads to something of a lost in translation situation.

That said, why are people asking for a new playable retro character? It's not like Sakurai has to fill a quota or anything.

I'm guessing it's because people want to feel that same kind of "who's that" wonder that happened with Melee's inclusion of Fire Emblem characters when the series registered as a collective "wat" to the large majority of the world.

He doesn't have a name, so Prince Sable is simpler than "Prince of the Sable Kingdom."

Breathing new life into old forgotten characters that have never been in a 3D game has always been one of my favourite parts of smash bros.

I personally have no interest whatsoever in playing as flavour of the year fire emblem characters, side characters from Wii/WiiU/3DS games or generic player avatars (talking about Miis here, I like Villagers inclusion).

Also their designs are usually a lot more interesting than newer character designs to me.

Maturity, bitches.
Didn't release in Japan, apparently
That has no bearing on the situation since the Chronicles would be handled by the localisation team. It is down to the legal troubles the game has and not being in the Chronicles was the final confirmation needed to know Nintendo has basically swept the title under the carpet. I mean just listing it surely wouldn't get get them in trouble but apparently that's a risk too great for Nintendo.

Now that's a pretty obscure AT. Me likey, I knew about this game but I loved getting trophies of these completely unknown '80s JPN-only releases in Melee.

Another fun fact: Sable's game was developed by Nintendo R&D1 and Intelligent Systems. THIS MUST BE THE GREATEST GAME OF ALL TIME.

Woah woah woah I didn't know that. Two best internal Nintendo studios of the time collaborated on this game? It must be good, dayum.

This game's amazing and you all should feel bad.

All right, not really "amazing." Just really damn good.

I've loved this game's box art ever since I first saw it online 10 years or so ago.

Why isn't there a gigantic coffee table book of all of Nintendo's accumulated art over the years? Why isn't something like this a preorder bonus with Smash 4?

The fact his AT status was confirmed externally to Miiverse messes with that guy's silly Rayman theory.
