Resident Evil HD Remaster confirmed for PS3/PS4/360/XB1/PC

nobody said it was easy
they're saying don't call this a remaster or remake. because it's not
it's a port. which is perfectly fine. but calling it remaster implies certain things and lets them charge more money

I bet even if they remade the entire game and it was glorious, many of the same people ripping this effort would balk at a price over $20 for that and say they'd wait for half price somewhere down the road.

This obviously isn't a huge undertaking for Capcom, and it's cool enough to be worth revisiting again.

If they were going to go through the effort of remaking the backgrounds (rerendering, whatever), they would go all out and make an RE 1.5 kind of thing. It wouldn't be RE remastered anymore.

Upscaling, filtering and cropping the image does not suggest remaster to me.

Maybe it's time for an industry governing body to standardize the marketing behind these kind of things.

That is the most absurd idea I have heard in a while.

"Rated R for Remastered."

If this is around 20, I may consider it down the line. It looks like a straight port but I don't see anything wrong with it as long as it has true widescreen and isn't over priced.

Capcom give us good news and some GAFers just hating... love this place.

Day one for sure.

Nobody's "just hating." People have reasonable reasons for disliking what we know.

I bet even if they remade the entire game and it was glorious, many of the same people ripping this effort would balk at a price over $20 for that and say they'd wait for half price somewhere down the road.

Irrelevant hypothetical situation based on nothing.

This obviously isn't a huge undertaking for Capcom, and it's cool enough to be worth revisiting again.

If it isn't a huge undertaking, then it should be priced accordingly. Final Fantasy VII and VIII were released with this level of effort on the PC and they cost less than $20 a piece.

If they were going to go through the effort of remaking the backgrounds (rerendering, whatever), they would go all out and make an RE 1.5 kind of thing. It wouldn't be RE remastered anymore.

Remaking and remastering aren't the same thing.

If Capcom went back to their original REmake assets and re-rendered them for HD, that's literally the definition of an HD remaster.

Nobody's annoyed that Capcom isn't remaking the whole game. But: if it's a port, it's a bad one, and it shouldn't be called HD Remaster.

Well, despite all the filters, I'm going to buy this anyway. It's the best Resident Evil, and soon I can play it
legally
on PC.

I hope they do this with Resident Evil Ø too. It's the only one I haven't played.

Looks likes it's gonna be pretty shit, tbh. Guess I'll stick with the Dolphin version until this gets cheap.

This could be better if it has true wide screen. 1080p 30fps is expected. I don't see how it's pretty shit. Get it for the Sony or MSFT platforms of for PC. It will be the definitive version for now.

Just seen the screen over the widescreen stuff. Not sure what to think yet until we see it.

I'm more excited to see what's coming in the limited edition retail version. I'm definitely gonna import that. Also I hope the achievements include some decent challenges.

People that hate the new style of RE really better buy this to give Capcom a message. Perhaps this will lead to better things. :D

While I agree, a few points to consider:

Concerns on the consumer end:
  • The work so far is causing numerous depth and lighting issues.
  • Some areas like Hall of Mirrors are completely different in presentation due to whatever work they are doing.
  • Speaking of Hall of Mirrors, that zombie
    possibly Crimson Head
    is floating noticeably.
  • Issues with just visuals in screenshots may indicate other issues when the game is in motion.

In regards to Capcom:
  • Company has a habit at looking at sales numbers in a vaccuum.
  • This port, while available on 5 popular platforms, is digital only.
  • Marketing is likely to only extend to game websites and forums. The usual Capcom marketing blitz that likely lead to the respectable sales of RE5 and RE6 will not be present for this.

Doesn't make for a good combination all together. Hopefully the game will play great and what we're seeing thus far in the worst examples of screenshots is the worst to expect. Even better would be for Capcom to recognize the criticism and correct these issues as best they can, considering one of the designers for REmake is working on the damn thing.

So while IMO people should support this, especially if they complain about the new games or the lack of diversity from these AAA studios, Capcom is already making it an uphill battle for both themselves and the consumers to make it happen.

Wouldn't be surprised if PC is locked at 30 too. The current gen consoles should easily be able to handle 60 fps with those visuals anyway.

Unless modders somehow manage to find the original assets for the FMV that may or may not be at Capcom right now and re-render them, it's not going to be 60 fps ever.

Ok, operation breakintocapcomHQ is a go.

He's a pretty swell guy in my books anyway.
This will make another nice addition to my Steam library at some point. I wonder if it'll have a texture mod made for it like the one currently being made for RE4, might be trickier since it's pre-rendered.

Think more along the lines of Google not using the word "Free" in what was formerly known as free to play games.

It's a consumer protection idea. This isn't a remaster by any means, it's questionable if it should be allowed to use the HD nomenclature.

I don't think the game would work well at 60 fps. Most backgrounds are animated, and they were created with 30 fps in mind.

I don't think I'd classify this as true wide-screen

You'll probably wind up having to shoot more enemies off screen than before as well in this mode. You're better off sticking with the original 4:3 aspect ratio.

GAF never fails to entertain on how knowledgable their user base claims to be, but then says narrow (but understandable) things like this.

This is a low risk attempt to see how a game like this will do as a multi platform release, with the benefits of tapping into the remaster market in the barest way possible without doing a straight port.

To them, it's [hopefully] easy profit and self-rewarding research.

I'm extremely glad i managed to entertain you, people who find entertainment in each other usually form stronger bonds.

That said, i highlighted a part, well most, of your quote so maybe you realize what you posted.
If you are ok with them spending almost no money to make a blatant money-grab that you (and i) will pay 20-30 for , so they can check out if we are willing to spend more for simply up-scaled ports of decades old games while at the other hand they should be working their asses out to at least have the japanese Deep Down beta they promised ready for this summer, then i guess we have little to discuss.

You know what? I'm not even remotely a Capcom hater. I tend to love most of their games, their latest included, and i absolutely adore REmake, but things like this give fuel to all the haters, and they are just wrong decisions.

What's the hard line between "good port" and "remaster", exactly?

First thought: better be an achievement/trophy for never fireing a shot (knife run)

Second: Could this be a hint that an actual RE2 Remake might be around the corner? Maybe they're getting the engine and tools up to date, ala TLOU remaster?

Also, when do the 4:3 / widescreen GAF wars start? Original intent / framing vs new framing.

Tell you the truth not sure my stance in videogames. Movies I go with the director. There might be a few places where wide screen and new camera angles / fovs might not feel right.

Now I get the (cough) in the thread's title. I guess upscaling and cropping the screen is the best they could do. They probably don't have the assets for the pre-rendered backgrounds anymore.

Surprising news to say the least. I'm fine with the wii version though so I think I might skip this one.

I know a lot of people have been asking for this though, so that's good, and everyone who somehow hasn't played REmake yet now has the perfect opportunity to do so.

It would only work for polygonal objects, and given that the backgrounds are prerendered they will remain untouched.

How can they only do 30 FPS on current gen systems for an HD remastering of a MID NINETIES GAME!?

All of the animations, 3D models and FMV backgrounds, were made with 30FPS animation. It would be very weird to see those running at 60FPS, they wouldn't look normal. Capcom would have to redo all of the animations for 60FPS. Otherwise everything would look as though it is playing in double speed.
