13 months exclusivity on Titanfall was long enough for EA/Respawn/Xbox to use the word 'first on.'

Granted, it was obvious back then that it was timed, since Respawn was skirting around the question by saying they do want to reach out to the broadest audience possible.

Yes I get your point! Actually, did EA really use the word 'first on' for TitanFall? I was under the impression they always used 'exclusive'. Its like No man's Sky... Sony never used exclusive for this particular game, we would've had a thread like this.

It's crazy how the messaging is though isn't it? At first it even says MS published and now it's magically gone and Geoff has to basically pry folks for what should be basic information. With other PC or PS4 games, at least we know if it's a timed exclusive or not fairly soon. This is just ridiculous.

Yup, this is beyond insane. i never seen this much confusion in any entertainment industry when it comes to a product.

I'm thinking it has to be. After embarrassing myself with my shit math....the cost it would need to make up for cutting out 50% of their user base, just isn't adding up here. Would make more sense if they are just pocketing the extra cash from MS to keep it timed exclusive for the holidays (they want their console units sold)..and then the title releases in 2016 for PS4 and other platforms.

I don't know the generally accepted cut for publishers per $60 sale (I'd guess $25 ish?), but if we assume it's $20-$25 and SE are expecting this to do similar numbers to TR2013, then they're going to miss out on at least 3 million sales by going Xbox exclusive, so I would guess that could be anything from $60-$75 million in missed revenue.

I have to give it to SE, for a game that garnered a lukewarm reception when first revealed, this is one sureway of burning it in everyone's consciousness. Approaching 3k posts with no signs of slowdown.

There's a difference between salt, and genuine disappointment from fans that have been there since day 1 in 1996
I can't comprehend fans of the franchise being disappointed about a sequel of a reboot that butchered the series being exclusive to one platform.

My father is a big, big Tomb Raider fan and I would've loved to play the game with him.

Well, if they don't want my money then I guess that's that.

And the whole "you have Tomb Raider Osiris" is even more a slap in the face.
The Lara Croft spin-offs are far closer to the classic Tomb Raider formula than the shitty reboot ever was.

There's a Tomb Raider for PlayStation fans. It's called Osiris.

WTF is this trash?

Will it temporarly make PS4 owners feel bad for not owning one?

Yeah, that was a pretty crummy comment by him, I don't know why people are so ferociously loyal to companies like that, lol. It really sucks that the game is strip away from people have been playing it on pc and sony but its part of the game - it's one of the reasons i own all three consoles at the moment so i don't miss anything.

1) This is a good exclusive to get in that it can help MS in Europe where they've been struggling.
2) TR + Halo sets them up for a decent holiday in 2015 in the US.
3) Both MS and Sony have moneyhatted before and targeted series that were multiplatform or exclusive to other consoles. I can understand disappointment but all the vitriol is ironic although entertaining.

TR is not going to help MS in Europe .

So a timed exclusive for a mediocre game? I don't see the big deal, they will lose a lot of sales though, that's for sure. Can't imagine people actually buying a console for this game lol.

hence the moneyhat, SE is not giving away the exclusivity for nothing

unless they are dumb

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.
Is Rise of the Tomb Raider also coming to Xbox 360? Thats what makes this even more fucking insane with a Holiday 2015 last-gen release but not one on the market leader console or the other half of the rapidly thinning last-gen market. Why even make the 360 version at all if the point is to push Xbox One?

If it was a permanent exclusive they would have used more final language. They will announce other platforms later. In the upcoming days they will clarify this deal by saying "we're not talking about anything beyond the exclusive xbox one launch right now"

if you guys keep saying your going to wait for this to hit other platforms MS will probably make another deal to keep it a true exclusive, it happened before. ;)

Ah okay, you have a point! I wasn't considering that they don't get the full cut (which is pretty obvious). So that brings it back down to a more..realistic figure. *Welp* this makes me sad.

the fan's money, not the platform holder's.
call me a romantic, but one's sort of a token of appreciation from the fan to the creator, the other one's a cold strategic business deal.

but that's just imho, CD and MS can do whatever they want. gonna get an Xbone eventually anyways, just a shame that i might miss out on day-1-ing this game.

That might work on Kickstarter, where developers ask for fans money upfront and often in quantities much larger than 60 bucks a pop to CREATE the game in teh first place, but I don't think Square-Enix or Crystal Dynamics can afford to go the hobo with a change cup route being as big as they are.

Neither does Microsoft, Geoff or Square.

No one knows if it is a timed exclusive or who is the publisher.

Clusterfuck all around.

This stuff hurts my brain. It'd be best to just bail out and wait until someone sacks up and lays out the official details. No PR/corporate speak like Microsoft seems to run into a lot.

Yeah, fair's fair, here: I was somewhat dickish in my first response to his tweets, but I was regarding that as his final word and that's wrong; he's certainly doing some work to try to get explicit straight answers.

And indeed, it could perhaps be construed that the fact that he's having difficulty getting explicit straight answers suggests that something's up.

Yupyup. His initial tweet was correct, though. MS isn't publishing. And the fact that they're giving someone that could easily be considered the most notable journalist in this particular field the runaround makes me think it's a very complex situation.
