Hmmmm...I don't know if I can agree with that.
The N64 was a complete failure in Japan (only selling around 5 million units; a huge drop off from the SNES's 17 million), it never managed to gain back any ground that the Genesis had stolen from the NES or improve on the NES's NA numbers despite being more western focused (The SNES and N64's NA LTD is around a stagnant 20 mill while the NES was around 34 million), and it failed to stop the new-comer console from completely dominating it. I feel that you kind of have to do a bit of stretching to make the N64 sound like a successful console in any area that doesn't involve software.

The NGC...well...do we really need to debate on that? Iwata has pretty much flat out admitted that it was a failure in almost every respect, and he never wanted to see the company in that position again.
:/

If we consider N64 and GC failures, then we have to consider every home console after the 16-Bit Era and before the seventh generation was a failure besides the PS1 and PS2... Actually, considering the dominance of the Atari 2600 in the second generation, the NES in the third generation, and the assumed dominance of the PS4 in the eighth generation, it looks like having two or more competitive home consoles in a single generation like the SNES & Genesis or the Wii, PS3 & 360 are aberrations compared to the eras when a single console is completely dominant like the Atari 2600, NES, PS1, PS2, and likely PS4.

With PS4 still seemingly selling well (in order to hit 10m in < 9 months), is there a risk they'll be in short supply during the fall? Seems like they've been selling through 1m per month consistently since the start, which was estimated to be their production capacity. Or will they ramp up production? That could have an impact on whether Sony or MS come out on top during Oct/Nov.

They've likely slowly saved some stock since about May. The cost of producing PS4's since launch has gone down which might mean they added more production. I am expecting some shortages for smaller countries this fall though.

Who says we're not getting anything?

Hey Aqua, how much does it cost to get a pdf copy of the NDP report from NPD?? Can't GAF, just kickstart a campaign for the real numbers and report, so that you and cream aren't obligated to release numbers adter a certain time frame??

~$10,000 per month and the signing of a non-disclosure agreement making you liable if you share it.

They should be able to divert whatever stocks generally part of tier 3 for the next few months to build up capacity for fall.

Wouldn't "tier 3" typically be developing areas of the world that would be targeted in late, late gen for adoption? Wouldn't think those would be getting PS4s, yet, but rather being sent PS3s. There's not stock shortages anywhere in the world that I know of, so there should be plenty of stock slowing building up month-to-month combined with Sony's typical calendar Q4 heavy shipping to cover holidays unless PS4 becomes the next Tickle-me-Elmo. :O

Bummer, but whats the point of a report if you can't share it?? The gaming industry should be transparent. Its not like MS or Nintendo will suffer lower sales if consumers are influenced by low numbers of there consoles.

NPD thinks sharing the report will cause less people to subscribe.

PS4 is now available in 100 countries and regions. Some of those have got to be tier 3 I would imagine

The reason NPD can sell it is that companies can determine their investment and stock purchasing based on the sales data seen. It's about making money for the buyers of the report. Us amateurs just in it for the fun of seeing how our favorite games sold don't enter into that equation. Too bad, too, as the Japaneses sales tracking market is wonderfully filled with public data, in comparison. Makes for some great discussions in those threads, and that on a weekly basis.

Oh, didn't know that. Yep, would have to be. Although, has Sony even used the term "tier #" countries or was that just Microsoft?

I live in tier-3, so lol at you.

Also, we get Vita TV first because we actually buy Vitas.

Tier 3 as well. I believe PS4 released here first before Japan. So that makes Japan on tier > 3 ?

Good for The Last of-
NPD said:
July is typically a quiet month for software sales, representing about 5 percent of annual sales,” said Callahan. “Typically, EA’s NCAA Football launches in July, and often ranks as the top game. As that title is no longer being produced, new launch sales declined steeply by close to 70 percent in July 2014
Oh.

Those regions strongly favor PS, don't they? I know that for sure in the Middle East. I think they got PS4s last year. I don't know about XB1s though.

We favor piracy.

Order of market share :

PC + pirated games > Jailbroken 360 > PS3 > 360

But yeah, officially speaking, we're pro Playstation in general.

Japan is tier 2015, aka the games we care about are 1+ years late from hardware launch.

And we are getting their game in 2016, if they even bother to translate their game to English.

I think so, it's rare to see Xbox family* console over here.

You're missing pirated PS2 and pirated PSP, both at first and second place.

Nice month without surprises.
Microsoft is ecen more vague than usual though.
I still don't get why/how that many people are willing to pay more than 30$ for a one year old remaster though.

Because the game is something special and many people coming to the playstation echo system hadn't played it. Also others who have played it, love the game and want the best version.

There it is. If you can't understand that, you are being obtuse.

If we consider N64 and GC failures, then we have to consider every home console after the 16-Bit Era and before the seventh generation was a failure besides the PS1 and PS2... .

One could argue that a lot of the non-Atari/NES/Genesis/SNES/PS1/PS2/360/Wii home consoles were basically total failures in the long run. Machines like the Intellivision and TurboGrafx-16 never really amounted to anything in the long haul, and they generally sold way lower than their counter parts (Outside of the 7th and 4th gens the outcomes are always very "PS2 vs NGC and Xbox"-like as far as I can tell.)
It's quite fascinating; video game history is short, but man is it interesting.

Okay so it's the dead of night and barely anybody is paying attention to this topic. Perfect time to make a comment about NPD sales...

At the start of the next page.

NPD July sales:

PS4 - 187K

XBO - 131K

I was dead on with my Xbox One prediction of 132K

Compare with last month:

NPD June sales:

PS4 - 269K

XBO - 197K

Adjusted for 4-week differential:

NPD June sales (if 4-weeks):

PS4 - 215K

XBO - 158K

Correlation with Callahan's PR statement:

When combining life-to-date sales of Xbox One and PS4 after nine months, and comparing them to the combined totals of nine months of sales for Xbox 360 and PS3, sales of the newest consoles are larger than the prior generation by close to 80 percent,” said Callahan

PS3 LTD as of July 2007 - 1.61 million

360 LTD as of July 2006 - 2.21 million

Combined 9-month total = 3.82 million

PS4 LTD as of July 2014 - 3.76 million

XBO LTD as of July 2014 - 3.05 million

Combined 9-month total = 6.81 million

% change from 3.82 million to 6.81 million is 78.27%.

Ergo, sales of the newest consoles are larger than the prior generation by "close to 80%."

I'm going to sleep now. I'll say more tomorrow.
