NPD July sales:
Snip

Edit: Kinda steep drop off

Quite a drop for PS4, hopefully August will fare better with TLOU driving some hardware sales. September has Destiny so I expect huge numbers then.

Tier 3 as well. I believe PS4 released here first before Japan. So that makes Japan on tier > 3 ?

That would make whatever country you're in a "tier 1." The "tier" thing is a Microsoft term used to indicate the order of release for the Xbox One. Tier 1 countries first, Tier 2 countries second, etc. The fact you got PS4 before Japan means your country, by definition in PS4 terms, could not be a tier 3. Not sure what your country is, but don't get the "tier" thing confused with first/second/third-world definitions.

PS4 - 187K

XBO - 131K

I was dead on with my Xbox One prediction of 132K

Compare with last month:

NPD June sales:

PS4 - 269K

XBO - 197K

Adjusted for 4-week differential:

NPD June sales (if 4-weeks):

PS4 - 215K

XBO - 158K

Correlation with Callahan's PR statement:

PS3 LTD as of July 2007 - 1.61 million

360 LTD as of July 2006 - 2.21 million

Combined 9-month total = 3.82 million

PS4 LTD as of July 2014 - 3.76 million

XBO LTD as of July 2014 - 3.05 million

Combined 9-month total = 6.81 million

% change from 3.82 million to 6.81 million is 78.27%.

Ergo, sales of the newest consoles are larger than the prior generation by "close to 80%."

I'm going to sleep now. I'll say more tomorrow.

Thank you!!

Uh oh. Bad numbers for a leading console and all around.

This leads me to believe PS4 is also suffering from frontloaded numbers due to last gen exhaustation and that the market for home consoles has undoubtedly shrinked in the US.

Christmas will reveal the truth.

This is actually the lowest month for the PS4 in recorded NPD history since the PS4 was released last year.

The PS4 had never really dipped below ~200k in any other month.

Thanks again for the numbers Aquamarine.

This right here tells you MS can win back America. XB1 figure is terribad obviously, but the PS4 one, for a leading console with the competition failing? That's an awful number.

PS4 is no Wii/PS2 juggernaut at the moment.

Wii - 425,000
Nintendo DS - 405,000
PlayStation 2 - 222,000
PlayStation Portable - 214,000
Xbox 360 - 170,000
PlayStation 3 - 159,000
Game Boy Advance - 87,000

Man, this makes the PS4 number even more disappointing. The PS4 must be doing much better outside of North America and Japan.

Think next month may be low as well. That white destiny bundle may be holding back sales, so September should be a very good month for PS4.

The numbers for this month seems pretty low given all the hype this thread received lol.

Guess the improvement in numbers will be seen come September NPD.

Because the game is something special and many people coming to the playstation echo system hadn't played it. Also others who have played it, love the game and want the best version.

There it is. If you can't understand that, you are being obtuse.

It's pretty much the same, as buying a Blu-Ray version of your favorite film. No-one wonders why people do that, eventhough they're essentially remasters as well.

Yes I understand them, just joking with you. Sony didn't use the term tier in which country they release their console. On the other hand, in term of Microsoft tier, my country is not in any tier as far as I know. Probably tier oblivion.

It's becoming really hard for the video game industry to try to spin the numbers, the market contraction is so brutal.

NPD July 2007

Wii - 425,000
Nintendo DS - 405,000
PlayStation 2 - 222,000
PlayStation Portable - 214,000
Xbox 360 - 170,000
PlayStation 3 - 159,000
Game Boy Advance - 87,000

Is it normal for July to be less than June? Kinda surprised PS4 is under 200k.

Yes, US school holidays start in June, any parent or college student buying a console for the summer will buy in June. The MoM drop is expected, but I don't think anyone expected it to be as large, it is a 20% fall in the weekly sales rate, I expected around an 8-10% fall.

We will see how August is, but with the majority of consumer spending moving towards back to school products like laptops, tablets and clothes consoles may be squeezed again. I still think releasing TLOU:R in August was a mistake, Sony should have capitalised on a barren summer and released it in June to coincide with the start of the holiday. I think the game would have performed better and hardware would have seen a bigger boost. I guess it just wasn't ready on time...

And this is not even 2008-2009 (when the Wii/DS used to sell 600-700k in regular months like this)

So the Wii was doing better than the PS4 and the Bone combined.

Have to put most of that on Nintendo. The PS3/360 successors are right on par with those sales.
