CGI scenes that used blow your mind and now look ugly compared to in-game graphics

That tree that pops in toward the end of the gif really, really bothers me.

Hi, I'm nortonff. I spend my life going into threads to say that I don't care about the topic of the thread. It's a really good use of my time.
I'll never forget the first time I saw a FF9 CGI.
Completely blew me away.

Starcraft 1's cinematics are definitely starting to show their age.
This is amazing. Everything was so high-resolution and defined in my memory, from the textures to the actual video output, but this stuff has easily been eclipsed by real-time graphics even on consoles.

Skipped ahead in the video for a true WTF before realizing it goes on to show all of SC2's cutscenes as well.

Basically this only works with video game CG from before 1997-8. The Sonic Adventure CG intro (youtube's compression really hurts it), and the Resident Evil Code Veronica intro from early 2000 still hold up alright, and despite scale and art style were likely originally rendered in a quality surpassing today's games in some ways, IMO.

The Dreamcast is about where I'd draw the line. The CG got more detailed and framerate became more tolerable, and that continued into the PS2's release in 2001.

This was one of the first games I ever saw/played, so naturally I asked a friend "Man, do you think we'll ever get a game that looks like this?" and we both went "probably not". And now it looks like shit. Lol.

Yeah seeing this intro/game at a neighbors house when I was 12 turned me was what probably contributed the most towards turning me into a PC gamer for many years. The visuals stunned me and spooked the hell out of me, watching it now I'm like "why the hell did I think that imp was creepy?" lol.

This should be "Final Fantasy and Blizzard titles, the thread". I'm with the OP on thinking that of FFVII when I first played it. Nonetheless, I would have gladly accepted a gaming world of high-resolution cinder block hands. Then there were the insane scenes in VIII where it started in-engine stuff while CGI was still running for what, at the time, looked like incredible and seamless transitions.

Square had to go and ruin everything by making Advent Children and having us realize that games COULD actually look like that and they were holding out on us. FFXV is their chance to redeem themselves on that. Blizzard are still masters of CGI trailers.

Looking back I think a lot of what make a lot of things so instantly outdated is having a poor understanding on how to navigate up to (and occasionally beyond) the Uncanny Valley at the time.

I was so obsessed with a game called Lost Eden back in the day, both because of dinosaurs and I had grown a love for point and click adventure games on the PC at that time, but it basically enticed me into buying a PC with a CD drive.

I still think the game is great, and I love the soundtrack for just how unusual it is, but by GOD do the 3D dinosaurs look dodgy as fuck now.

Attract Mode

Wow! I remember this game. I think I at least must have played the demo...wow

When I was young I would keep making a new save file for KH1 just to see the CGI opening over and over. Blew me away back then and even today I don't consider it ugly at all.
