How do you feel Smash 4 did with it's newcomer selection? I made this picture so you try and think of the newcomers as a whole, not just the ones leaked.

I can't believe so many people are upset about the Ice Climbers. I always thought they were terrible and a waste of a slot, most people don't even remember Ice Climber on the NES.

I've been to lots of Smash parties and everyone collectively poops on the Ice Climbers. I'm just really surprised there are so many super fans out there, people claiming they have no reason to play the game if there are no Ice Climbers.

We got Little Mac, Mega Man, and Duck Hunt Dog, but you won't play the game if there is no Ice Climbers?! It really makes me feel like some asshole just farted in my pants.

Smash Bros is a video game, not just a museum. Characters aren't just enjoyed for nostalgia, they're also enjoye for how they play. Often people like a character even if they never played that character's games.

Ice Climbers were popular despite their obscure beginnings thanks to their fun and interesting dual character gimmick. They became the archetypical bizarro character in tournaments.

I think there are 5 more, but looking back at the earliest reveal...there are a lot here I never would have guessed and that seem to be great additions to the roster!

Yeah, no one gives a shit about these two who are unlike any other character on the roster, have been vets since Melee, are top-tier, and are super cute.

I get not caring about a character - I, for example, have absolutely no interest in Mewtwo - but that doesn't mean no one likes them and they're a waste of a slot. "All my friends say they're dumb" isn't exactly a good reason to think a character is universally hated.

I already knew by the Robin/Lucina trailer that this game was going to have the best batch of newcomers yet. Bowser Jr. only adds to that. There have never been so many characters I'm hyped for as there are now.

Apologies if I couldn't find all original posts/sources on my summary. I have limited time!

Things that make it seem believable:

1. Clone Corner - if a leaker wanted their leak to be believable, they'd have put lucina next to marth/robin, Dr mario near mario/luigi, and dark pit next to pit/palutena
2. The thicker black bar for kirby - actual behaviour from the game that pretty much nobody noticed. It'd be incredibly impressive for a leaker to add that knowing it was in the game.
3. Removal of names - E3 build had names under each character. A leaker would have probably left those in to make their leak believable.
4. Tomodachi stage - living room is nearly identical to the one in the famitsu scan
5. Highlighted stage actually increases in size, therefore overlaps w/ UI - known behavior of stage select.
6. The CSS isn't 100% full. Every other leak fills out the entire screen.
7. Duck hunt dog's render is entirely new/unique
8. Fox now has a blue background, like the box

Things that cast doubt onto the leak:

1. Ness's shirt is not up to other smash standards! (maybe sakurai and team took some creative liberties?)
2. Falco's render is similar to other smash poses (Maybe it is! Why not? - also, his scanner is in a different position)
3. Dr Mario/Bowser Jr/Jiggly is similar to existing promo art (So are palutena, pac man, and lucina!)
4. Duck Hunt is a ridiculous name, it should be duck hunt dog, etc (It's ridiculous indeed... why would a leaker try to make his leak LESS believable though?)
5. Game and watch didnt have an outline in the pac man trailer (Game and watch was not confirmed or updated in that trailer, either)
6. I guess shulk has a similar pose to one of little mac's in-game poses?

Things that are 100% proof that it's Fake:

1. ... someone could have photoshopped it all, i guess?

1. Design alterations are common. Why did Mario have red suspenders but now blue?

2. A pose can only go so far.

3. Not everything has to always be drastically different.

4. Duck could be the name of the bird, Hunt could be the dog's name. ala Banjo Kazooie

5. Outline is so that you can see him easier on a tiny screen.

6. Character cloning is notorious in vgs and Smash Bros.

This picture led to this - which some people are taking to mean Ridley/Mach rider, etc are in the game.

There was a leak that matches up with this info (only the quoted part should be taken seriously) back in july - basically says that this video is from an old (likely feature-complete) build and may have been circulating since back in july.

Red Arremer said it best, the Ice Climbers are a immensely unique character archetype with many fans and almost act as Smash representatives despite the fact that they come from a middling piece of early Nintendo game software and have yet to be seen in any other product from Nintendo. If anything, people who can't see why folks would be (righteously) upset over their disconfirmation aren't doing a good enough job empathizing with them and are instead jumping the gun to see only "whining over a character I consider bad".

If Ice Climbers and Captain Falcon were switched, how many people in here would be calm and collected while decrying feelings from Falcon mains and subculture as "whining over a unneeded/irrelevant character"?

Really stellar selection of newcomers. Some long requested characters as well as some completely unexpected and creative ones. I'd love to see Ridley, Bomberman, and Simon Belmont, but the roster is still beyond what I ever expected.

A solid A-. The lack of a DK and Zelda newcomer stings slightly, but these characters easily make up for it, especially Shulk. I can't wait to see how they handle the duck hunter!

VERY happy with the newcomer selection! There's some more newcomers I'd like in, but this I am totally happy it with at this point.

I don't count Miis since I can't play em online but the 14 newcomers are quite good and I like all of the, to some degree. Getting Lucina, Palutena, Villager, DHD, and Koopalings are a dream come true.

I'm still riding with Gematsu and the fact there is a Sneaky Spirit in Smash Run. This may be the base roster for the 3DS version, but I don't believe it will be for the Wii U.

I knew not all characters I wanted would get in, and most of them became assist trophies.. But I'm happy with the newcomers, in my opinion, its the best newcomer list Smash Bros ever got.
