Bravely Default |OT| For the Americas

One of the misconceptions some have about BD is that it's a traditional jRPG where grinding levels will let you waltz through the game. Yes you can turn the difficulty down to Easy, run standard builds, and/or use cheese tactics (Stillness, Hasten World), but part of the appeal is using different job combinations/strategies in battle.

I went through half the game with a standard offensive physical+tank+heal+offensive magic (Valk, Knight, White Mage, Black Mage) setup and it worked against pretty much everything. But it was kind of cookie-cutter and boring. It wasn't until I started experimenting that my battles became more interesting.

So, I'm going to the final dungeon in the last chapter

My chars are all level 75, not all jobs are mastered, Am I screwed am I not? :(

The party I normally use is something like:

Angnes: Spiritmaster/White Mage(both mastered)
Tiz: Templar/Pirate(both mastered)
Ringabel: Thief/Spellfencer(the last one isn't mastered)
Edea: DarkKnight/Spellfencer(both mastered)

So, any particular fun combination for the last boss? I mean, I really like the game, but I just want to finish already(heck, I'm considering lowering the difficulty to easy) I'm pretty sure that if the boss one shots me I will stop playing for like a month or more. Any builds that you like for the final boss?

I'm pretty sure the final boss can one-shot any given party even at level 99 with mastered jobs if you don't double your HP with Giant's Draft. Or you can avoid damage with one of several options.

<_< I broke the final boss with Dark Knight class.

Default 2.

Brave 4.

Bravely Second helps a lot. And since I never used it during the game, had 4 ticks, I think? Been awhile.

I can't think of anything during the game that RageDrain doesn't break. I'm sure there is something Dark is not effective against though.

Not sure if it works on the superboss enemies.

Ok, here goes my party:

All of them are base level 58.

Tiz:
Pirate lvl 12
Job Command: B/W Magic

Agnes:
Salve Maker lvl 10
Job Command: White Magic

Edea:
Swordmaster lvl 10
Job Command: Acrobatics

Ringabel:
Ranger lvl 13
Job Command: Acrobatics

So, for example in the surroundings of Eternia, there's these mushroom enemies that mop the floor with me. They cast chaos spore when I attack them and I can't do anything about it. There's also these little root enemies that come with wolves and I also have no idea how to deal with them. Fire attacks are supposedly effective but Tiz' magic must be very weak or something. I desperately need some help :(

Chaos Spore activates on physical damage. So use magic, equip items that nullify the effect you get (I think it's confusion), or cast status-nullifying magic.

Tiz is a Pirate so he has the highest physical damage (STR) in the game, but Pirates have very low magic attack (INT). If you want to deal offensive magic, use a main job with high INT, like Black Mage or Arcanist. A better secondary class for a Pirate is a physical damage class like Swordmaster, Thief, Ninja, etc.

Agnes is fine.

Not sure how well Acrobatics work with Swordmaster/Ranger but the damage from Acrobatics is best suited for a spear weapon. Maybe use Ninja or Pirate as a secondary class.

You also have 3 offensive-oriented classes (well Swordmaster is more of a countering class) that deal physical damage. Try to balance out your team more. Maybe a support character like a Performer, or an offensive magic dealer like a Black Mage.

Some other tips:
-equip items that give S rank to maximize stat benefits
-buy new items/scrolls from the Eternia shop if you can afford it
-a Summoner with the Fire Summon or a Black Mage with Firaga can kill all the enemies outside Eternia

Eternia is actually great farming location pre-Chapter 5.

idk, Rage/Drain on Gigas Lich sounds like a recipe for disaster :p

So I reworked my party, made Tiz a Black Mage w/white magic, kept Agnes intact (Salve Maker w/white magic), made Edea a Pirate w/Bushido and Ringabel is now a Ninja (dunno which ability is a good pair up for Ninjas... Spell-Fencer?)

Once I get the Arcanist asterisk I should make Tiz that, and them give Agnes the Spiritmaster job while keeping her white magic, right?

Salve Maker can do nearly anything a White Mage can do, but better. And it can also do way more. Easily one of the best and most underrated jobs in the game, the only advantage to White Mage is Esunaga for instant full-party status restoration. I'd stick with that and add give her Spiritualism, that's what I ran with and I could easily break battles when I wanted/needed to.

Here is a full table for Compounding.

Not really sure about Arcanist. I didn't use it a whole lot.

Spoilers for second to last boss:

I need help with third form Airy. She is really REALLY hard. I had lots of trouble with the second form of Airy until I realized that rise from dead and see you in hell is an awesome combo.

Here is my load out: (all are around level 84)

Tiz (Mastered Ninja active job, also mastered Dark knight, Vampire, swordmaster and spell fencer). Ninja with sword magic support skills are: Rise from Dead, Sword Lore, see you in Hell, p. attack 20%.

Ringabel (Mastered Ninja active job, also mastered Dark knight, Vampire, swordmaster, hunter and red mage). Ninja with compounding active skill (Mainly for Giants Draft and resurrection) support skills are: Rise from Dead, Katana Lore, see you in Hell, speed up 20%.

Edea (Mastered Valkyrie active job, also mastered Templar, Ninja, Pirate, and Performer, ). Valkyrie with Holy Arts active skill support skills are: , see you in Hell, speed up 30%. and Evade 10% up

Agnes (Mastered Spiritmaster active job, also mastered white mage, red mage, arcanist, Dark Knight, Salve-Maker, Summoner, and access to lvl 14 black mage through ablink). Spiritmaster with white mage active skill support skills are: Conservation of Life and Revenge.

Any tips? should I leave the final dungeon and grind some more jobs out? Any recommendations for skills? I am currently offline but my friend code is 3582-9066-6816 and name "Zipped".

which part are you having trouble with, I'm assuming the Acedia+Zeta Flare combo is killing you?

one way to cheese it is Hasten World/Jumps, lol

If the boss Defaults, this combo is coming. Have everyone Default. IIRC Acedia goes through all resists so there's nothing you can really do except raise your M. Def. If Acedia isn't immediately followed by Zeta Flare you can remove the weakness (or increase your elemental resistance) next turn with Spiritmaster skills. Not sure if the Iceflame Shield (nullifies all Water/Fire) works against this.

Slaughter can also wreck your team, and there's nothing you can really do except to tank up. One strategy I like to use is having at least one team member Defaulting every turn just in case something goes wrong.

Two Ninjas and a Valkyrie are kind of squishy. Maybe have Edea go Templar/Performer with support and defensive skills (Rampart, Got Your Back, One More For You, etc.). If Ringabel is used for drafting and resurrection, make his active job something with more HP and defence (if you aren't attacking a lot). Is Tiz doing a lot of damage? Going Dark Knight using Rage (with Sword Magic Drain) can keep his HP up while doing damage, and if you should resurrect at the end of a turn, use Minus Strike.

Also, equip Safety Rings/Ribbons to nullify death. Angelic Ward (White Mage support skill that has a 50% chance of reducing damage by 50%) is also good in a pinch.

I'll try switching Edea to Templar with Performer and Ringabel to Swordmaster with Compounding. Can't play until much later, but I'll give it a shot. Can I friend you? having another friend summon could help.

I finished the game last night, This party held fine(well, with a litle luck at the beggining actually) throught all the
Airy and Ouroboros fight

All my chars where level 78, they ended at level 80 after the fights:

+Tiz: Pirate/Swordmaster(both mastered, Free Lunch+Amped Strike)
+Agnes: Spiritmaster/White Mage(both mastered, main healer plus enigma and the other one that nulls stats)
+Ringabel: Red Mage/Salve-Maker(only RDM mastered, Salve was like level 9) This was the one giving me all the BP, the Salve Maker was for when the shit hits the fan, applying reraise and giant's draft(I only use the Draft in the first part of the last boss and the last part of the final boss)
+Edea:Dark Knight/Templar(DRK mastered, Templar was like level 11): RageDrain Combo and the ocassional Rampart

It might not be the best party or something, but it did the work without that much of a problem, hope that helps

Also, I was an idiot because I couldn't do the BP recovery trick in the first fight to all my chars because I'm a genius and equipped a ribbon in Edea -.-u

BP recovery trick?

[Gamefaqs says: ]

Here's what you need:
- everyone has BP recovery (red mage lv.9)
- one Templar/Knight/Whatever with B/W Magic + Group-cast all and status ailment amp

In battle, do this:
The templar/knight/whatever braves to get 4 turns and uses Poison, Poisona, Poison, Poisona on the whole party
Your whole party should get 4 BP, so you can spam Braves and BP skills with your other characters to your heart's content.

poor Edea, constantly getting hit by Stop from
Khamer aka coward king
because I was using Kairai to redirect everything to her lol

she did her job well though, soaking up hits for free

Setting a status ailment a second time will activate BP recovery. That is why it is so deadly against those dragons that keep using the Eye abilities.

I've reached chapter 5. I'm correct in assuming fighting all bosses again is entirely optional, correct? Other than the items/experience I could potentially obtain from beating them, I'm not missing out on anything vital or compromising getting to the true ending, right?

Knowing that I can refight them thru chapters 5-8, are there any in particular I should tackle? Or are they pretty much there for the sake of grinding and I should I just rush through what's left of the game?

The fights in 7 and 8 are the best in the whole game. The ones in 7 have some good items to steal, so you might want to do that. Use Rob Blind so you get more copies.

I'd suggest start leveling toward 99 and getting the money for Growth Egg and dat other one which doubles gil and negates everything else. Also it is a good chance to start mastering all your jobs. The final boss is no fucking joke in this game. They might be the hardest turn base boss I have ever fought already at the starting level and insanely on the last difficulty.

That's what I figured. I don't know if I really want more money but experience I could use. All my characters are level 70, and I'm sure I could master a couple more jobs, if anything to secure some of their best support abilities. Right now my build looks like this:

Tiz - Vampire / Arcanist (Lullaby + Twilight for mobs is amazing)
Ringabel - Ninja / Vampire
Edea - Swordmaster / Pirate (Dat Free Lunch + Amped Strike)
Agnes - White Mage / Spiritmaster

All of those are mastered, though I think everyone else has at least another job that's close to level 13-14. Any recommendations on what support abilities I could add to them that don't belong to either of those jobs? Are there any must-have abilities for my build in either the Templar or Dark Knight classes?

Dark Knight is the best offensive job in the game. I think Free Lunch + Amped Strike is a pretty overrated combo since it's just a couple ST 9999 hits. Rage with drain active might not do a single hit as high, but it will do many hits of 5000+ damage at level 99. Black Blade is also MT and will deal around 8000 damage.

Of course if you use Salve Maker (AKA, best support job in the game) you can make your opponents Dark-Weak and increase your Dark Knight's damage output even more.

"Have the courage to disobey."
. It's really more than just a arc line when it comes to this game I'd say.

Nothing's actually forcing you to go along with Airy's machinations, and if you decide to say f**k it, there's an ending waiting for you. It's only if you decide to go along with the madness that the game essentially says, "you've been a good sport, have a GOD to fight."

The story as a whole sucked. The only reason the story even "worked" (that being used VERY loosely) is because
your party members were the only major characters that didn't know what was going on, and nobody would tell you anything for the first four chapters even though it made no sense for them not to do so.

That's a good sign of a poor story, when it only works because it outright hides details from you because reasons.

Dark Knight/Pirate wouldn't work as well since Dark Knight's attacks sacrifice it's HP. Without Drain from the Spell Fencer your support/healing character is going to have to spend a lot of time babying the Dark Knight to keep them alive. And Rage is going to do a lot less attacks because you will run out of HP after just 3 or 4.

Vampire is an alternative, you can blow through your HP with powerful Dark Knight attacks and then use Blood Thirst for HP restoration. Riskier and all-around worse than comboing with Spell Fencer, but functional.

There's a weapon that I think is called the Blood Sword, and when you use it in battle it gives you the Drain Sword property just like the Spell Fencer's, so you can use Dark Knight setups without needing to subclass as a Spell Fencer. One can switch and use the weapon in one turn, then switch back to their main weapon in the next, especially useful while Braving.

Isn't it also pretty weak compared to other equipment later in the game? Or do you mean use it and then swap weapons? I don't even remember if you can do that and still keep the effects, if so that would work really well.

So I got to the end of Chapter 6.

i kinda surmised from other posts that there were special chapters if you did something a certain way and you got a premature bad ending if you did things another way. I went with destroying the crystal and now I'm in the Finale chapter. Am I on the way to the bad ending? If so, am I screwed or can I still take a crack arty those later chapters?

You can go back and do the other ending after you beat the game. I think it sends you back to chapter 5 if I am not mistaken. You could then just rush forward to chapter 7 if you already have all available jobs. Chapter 7 and 8 have the best boss battles in the game.

Didn't have time to play this at launch, been playing it on and off over the past few weeks.

Currently near the end of Chapter 3 I think (the Fire Crystal one IIRC?), doing the submission for what I assume is the Ninja job as I've beat all of the other Asterisk bearers there.

Dat OST. Loving how you can disable the random encounters if necessary when doing side quests and having to backtrack (really hoping I get my airship back soon >.>).

I'm nearing what I believe to be the ending of Chapter 5, and I'd like some advice on how to go forward from here. (I wouldn't highlight unless you've completed the entire game, just to be safe.)

I'm aware that breaking a crystal will result in a False Ending. I am also aware that I can do the False Ending and still go back to the point before I broke the crystal. Naturally, it seems like the way to proceed. However, I would rather not spoil anything more until the True Ending. Would breaking a crystal now reveal to me something that would be better off being revealed for the True Ending?

Not really, if you're at the point you know the truth about what's going on when you awaken the crystals and go through the light, there's not really anything to be spoiled.

I'm not exactly sure what this "truth" is. The biggest thing that the game revealed to me so far is that "something bad" might happen if the crystals are all awakened and that Alternis looks like Ringabel. I think the fairy might be the antagonist, but the game hasn't revealed whether or not my guess is correct. Am I still safe to complete the False Ending?

Getting that ending will answer those questions, but if those weren't expanded on in chapter 5 I think it happens at some point in chapter 6. So if you want to learn everything through the main chapters and not the "bad" ending you might want to go through chapter 6 first.

So in excitement for the second game I finally went back to this. I've just hit chapter 5. Honestly, I don't mind what's going on here. It's for story reasons and I can understand that.

But...
am I seriously going to have to, essentially, repeat this chapter twice more through chapters 6 & 7? That's what I'm getting from what I've read online, I think. I might be interpreting it wrong.
It doesn't help that the moment I
got to one of the crystals
in that chapter, the first thing I tried
was mashing X past the stopping point
, so I've already figured out a bunch of it by now. I just want to get further in to the story, damn it!

You will have to redo story fights again, yes. But chapter 7 and 8 contain the best side quest battles in the game. You should keep going just for those. Be sure to steal items from them in chapter 7. They have good items.

Oh, no worries, I'm in this till the end now. No way I'm stopping. Thanks for the heads up about stealing items, too; I keep forgetting you can even do that!

Also, by story fights, do you mean
the four crystal bosses
? And is there any point in
fighting all of the side quest bosses in both chapters
? Even if it's just cool little dialogue changes. If there's absolutely no point then I'll just skip them.

Hey guys, so, I just bought this game -- super fun so far.

Quick question re: Norende reconstruction. I have a bunch of friends from my 3DS, but is there anyway to also get them in Streetpass for Norende reconstruction? I guess I'm just confused about the whole thing. Thanks!
