Mario Kart 8 DLC pricing confirmed ($7.99 each or $11.99 for both, 16 tracks)

I was planning to pass up any MK 8 DLC, but F-Zero tracks? Nintendo wins. But November?

I am not a fan of Mario kart but that is a smashing deal 16 tracks for £11! You would never see this on the ps/xb. Well done nintendo

fired zero bullets in the orphanage.
What if one of the tracks is baby park

but the entire thing is all on a wall and is an antigravity segment.

I didn't play MK DS, so I don't know what they did.

But what they should do this time around is, if someone picks a character you don't have unlocked, it shows up as Luigi.
That's basically what they did, except it was dry koopa I think.

Why should they even hide the character? I mean, it's not a spoiler considering all the in-game ads for it. Plus it'll entice people to buy those characters.
It's not about hiding characters, it's about not forcing users with limited storage to download huge updates just to be able to continue playing online.

There's some confusion going round about how things will work, so let's try and address things.

  • Nintendo will not force players who don't purchase the DLC to download several GBs of data just to play online. The mandatory update will include the character models and the vehicle models, but not the tracks. This will be a FAIRLY SMALL update and will allow players without the DLC to still see others online playing as Link et al. This is exactly how the Mercedes DLC has worked, and indeed the coloured Yoshis/Shy Guys. By just doing yesterday's update and nothing more, you see these things when playing online.
  • When playing online, if a player in your lobby does not have the Pack 1 or Pack 2 DLC, tracks from those cups will not be available for voting. They will only appear if everyone in the room has the DLC.
  • The bonus of colored Yoshis/Shy Guys does not expire. You can buy the packs at any time, either as a bundle or seperately if you want, and you will get the bonus.

This sounds like a bad way of doing this. With 12 players, there will always be people who didn't buy the DLC. That's not a good business decision to sell your DLC and it isn't a good decision for those who want to play the new tracks online neither...

My guess is, each time a DLC track is chosen, the players without the DLC get a friendly reminder that there is DLC to buy right now and will be kicked out of the lobby - OR there will be two different kind of lobbies for people with DLC and for people without. This would of course lead to fragmentation, because it isn't guaranteed that if you bought one DLC, you also bought the second.

...What part of Baby Park was large? The joy from that was that the track was so small, that every item had a chance of screwing you over, regardless of who throw it.

I was talking about the two GC tracks in MK8.
Baby Park is bullshit, like you say, every item has a chance of screwing you over, regardless of who or how you throw it. No skills involved, chaos and randomness, mindless and not fun.
But most of NintendoGAF go to the Frantic tournament instead of the normal one, so I'm not surprised.

Maturity, bitches.
It was already used in Mario Kart DS.

Yeah, but this is DLC rather than the base package, so bringing back already used Retro Tracks may not be out of the question. Besides this will be the first time any track is in HD so it's all fresh.

This is the wrong way to go about this. It shouldn't be this way. Plenty of online multiplayer games have thought us this. All it takes is one guy not to have the DLC and you are done. Such a random and horrible way of doing it.

It should have it's own separate playlist or try to group players with DLC together when searching. That's it.

You state this like it is a fact. This is the dumbest way of doing DLC. Seperating the players bases is better, and even that isn't the best way. Why would I buy DLC when I will never get to play it? The chance of all 12 people buying DLC in a random group online is extremely low.

I'm "stating it like it's fact" based on Nintendo's past. In this case, Mario Golf: World Tour which had the exact same DLC model as Mario Kart 8. This is exactly how Mario Golf did things. Was it ideal? Well from Nintendo's perspective, perhaps, as everyone can just hop on and play. This is very important to them.

It doesn't stop there from being official Tournament rooms that only allow players with DLC to go in, though, which is (again) exactly how Mario Golf does it.

How does Titanfall handles this stuff for instance?

It's pretty shitty but well, if you don't get the DLC, you shouldn't be able to play on those tracks. Makes perfect sense. It's not like in a fighting game in which you can still battle against DLC characters, but can't play as them. A track involves everyone, so being able to play it without paying for it is not really fair for the people who did pay.
In fact you'll still be able to race against DLC characters, since it doesn't affect you directly.

Not a big deal anyway, communities can be done and I think the majority of the people who play online will get the DLC.

Can't decide weather to buy individual DLC packs or wait for inevitable disc version of all tracks and DLC.

That would be a first for Nintendo, don't think it's going to happen.
More probable a Definitive Edition of Smash Bros. honestly

New Luigi was a totally different game so it doesn't count, NSMBU was not included. No way they're doing a Mario Kart 8 Expansion Disc without the first 32 tracks and characters lol

Are you sure of that? Nintendo's article on nintendo.com repeatedly says “ADVANCE purchase”:

Advance purchase two new Mario Kart 8 DLC Packs and get a bonus

Two new downloadable content packs will take the world of Mario Kart™ 8 in directions the franchise has never seen before, while significantly expanding game-play options. The packs, which launch this fall and next spring and are available for advance purchase starting August 27 at $7.99 each (or $11.99 for both when purchased as a bundle), deliver a ton of new content, including first-time crossover characters like Link™ from The Legend of Zelda™ franchise and both Isabelle and the Villager from the Animal Crossing™ series.

Mario Kart 8 owners who advance purchase both packs bundled or individually will get eight new colors of Yoshi and eight new colors of Shy Guy to race with immediately. Starting August 27, to advance purchase the packs, users with a broadband Internet connection can click the new Shop icon in the game or visit the Nintendo eShop on Wii U. Be sure to download the new software update first in order to access the Shop icon in the game.

About 95% sure. Mario Golf worded their bonus the same too. The advance benefit is that you get the things now rather than when the DLC comes out.

So it could 4 retros and 4 new per DLC? The cups aren't really organized that way in the menu (Triforce Cup is on the retro row) but it would make sense since Wario's Gold Mine is there.

Wario's Gold Mine could be in the other cup, no?
I don't think they care honestly. I'm not expecting any kind of pattern.
I would've totally preferred Wario's Colosseum though.

Maybe, I was just saying with the way the cups are laid out in the menu, it would look like the Triforce Cup is in the Retro row but I doubt it matters. Retros always have the console name from which they originated in front of them so having retros with new courses in same cup would be strange but it's not like it could never happen.

Here's what it might go like.

Egg Cup
Wii Wario's Gold Mine
3 other retro tracks

Triforce Cup
Zelda Track
Mute City
Excitebike track
