The new 3DS will replace the actual 3DS model. It doesn't need exclusive games.

Monster Hunter 4G special edition/bundle would be quite enticing

I think it'll sell to MH4G customers or any other games that are better with the Circle Pad Pro (Smash?).

The 3DS wont just stop selling. Most if not all new 3DS customers will own a N3DS because Nintendo most probably will not ship the outdated models from this Holiday onwards.

I think phasing out the current models + games that will take advantage of new specs or features will help sell systems. Bundles with must have games such as MH4G and others will surely help to.

Nintendo should hope they can do 3M in their own turf.

Holiday launch in Japan is most likely a response due to lower sales than anticipated in their homeland.

Launching the new 3DS LL model corresponding with the releases of Monster Hunter 4, and upcoming titles such as Pokemon ORAS and Final Fantasy Explorers is a great strategy. I anticipated a revision for Smash due to the nature of the title; however, releasing it on the launch of Monster Hunter 4G might be better suited but will most likely impact future sales of 3DS' moving forward.

3-3.5 million HW sales by year-end seems like a fair bet, a decline but less steep without the launch of the revision.

The new models will replace the old ones. It doesn't need exclusive games in order to sell, it's not so difficult to understand.

And you don't see it selling gangbusters from the jump? Sure, who wants to but a new 3DS handheld revision.

Apart from the Xenoblade 3DS port existing, did they mention it having a release data or whether it'll even be a retail title?

I see that you adjusted the Xbox One hardware, but i just wanted to say that your probably want to adjust the Dead Rising 3 number as well. Right now it looks like you think that 40k out of those 100k people will buy the game, but not buy a Xbox One :)

So how far do you guys expect current 3DS sales to drop with the announcement of New 3DS? I'd assume any newcomers looking to join the 3DS family would just wait for New 3DS now since its only about a month and a half away.

I'm especially wondering how it will affect the rest of the world, since we now know that the current models are obsolete, but don't have a release date for the new models. Like, no tech-savvy person will buy a 3DS until then.

Well considering this is a 2015 release everywhere else I'd think Nintendo is gonna give the OG 3DS's one final push for the Holidays before phasing them out. The allure of Smash Bros and Pokemon would be too much of a missed marketing opportunity to clear out their remaining stock. But I will agree the more tech savy people will probably hold off. But I wonder how things will go in Japan the next month in Media Create. Is it possible we see Vita overtake the #1 spot for a few weeks?

Yeah that supposed NOA leak of the SSB3DS info was definitely the exception and not the rule. :)

For my 2 cents, I expect a good surge of sales for the 3DSLLi/3DSi (3DSi, in particular, due to the customizable faceplates; Think that could be a big hit with the Youkai Watch crowd who seem to skew a little younger and more gender agnostic). With that in mind, 3m the first calendar year of its release doesn't seem completely unreasonable. DSi alone did 1.9m its first calendar year of release, so could see the dual hitting of 3DSi and 3DSLLi getting close to 3m. If it does, it would have 3DS crossing 20m in just over a year from release so maybe by end of 2015 3DS would be at 20m. Nintendo needs cheaper handheld hardware in the West, especially, so if this extends 3DS's life to allow a real successor to be that much cheaper, all the better!

Also, haven't posted or read the MC threads much this year, but with the threads slowing down in the last few months have read a little more often, and just have to continue to say that I usually enjoy reading the discussions here!

I really hope not, especially with these numbers =(. If the Vita takes #1 at 16K, it'll be a very very sad couple of weeks. Smash will likely keep 3DS sales up in the meantime though.

I don't know, I guess, looking at the DSi, I could see the New 3DS maintaining the current sales for awhile, but I can't fault anyone who thinks it might have the same effect as the DSi XL. I think it really depends on the Amiibo performance and the willingness to cut the cord and make New 3DS exclusive software, forcing old 3DS owners to upgrade.

On the latter, they could do what they did in the past for the GBC, making the Pokémon Z exclusive to the New 3DS. Sure, Pokémon Crystal is the worst selling 3rd version maybe because of its GBC exclusiveness, but it's a risk they have to take, I guess.

It's a new system revision that works with every 3DS game, not a new handheld platform. They will announce bundles with Monster Hunter 4G which should be enough for the system to have a solid start.
