NPD Sales Results for August 2014 [Up4: PS4 #1, XB1 last week sales 2x last Jul week]

At some point you have to wonder how much money is the Xbox division allowed to spend/bleed. With the bundled games and deals, they can't be making much profit at all. Not even including the heavy investments into Kinect, which they killed 2 months ago.

I expect a black friday/holiday deal with Halo: MCC for free + another game and maybe even a price drop.

It seems that despite everything, so far, the gap between the PS4 and the XBO is just getting bigger and bigger.

As much as I like the Xbox, the damage was done last year. I think it's a good console and the OS updates each month are great but I feel should this trend continue they might have to cut price further. I've said it before but that system at birth was created by some people who did not understand it's audience and they have been damage controlling ever since. On the positive side, bring on Forza Horizon 2 and Sunset OverDrive.

I'm hoping they're up about 72% gen/gen, purely for my predictions, lol.
To nearest 5K:
70% ~ 255K
71% ~ 295K
72% ~ 335K

70% on the dot would be bad, anything about 72% or higher is at or above my expectations.

I doubt he'd say 75% as "over 70%, so we're probably at 74% up at max.

Thanks for the edit!

Saw your predictions were 337 combined and mine were 345. Could be a good month, but the WiiU (I predicted 70k...) will probably ruin everything.

Edit:
well to be fair it is over 70% vs almost 80% (last month's thing)

.....although if the difference is the same as last month, just the other way around, we're talking about ~72% here

I know you didn't mean it that way, but I'm sure he is consistently 2% off on his rounded number :p

Maybe next time they will be almost 67% higher (65) :p

I never understood the "Wow", "Oh snap" Surprised", etc responses in these NPD threads.

The PS4 is almost if not literally doubling the Xbox One in install base.

I mean... You'd have to be pretty bad at math not to expect these NPDs.

If I can predict this every month, can I has Pachters job?!

This NPD means U.S. the difference isn't double yet so it still surprising but WW even COD will sell better on PS4 the total install base is more than double by now

In USA? Not at all.
But it is gaining a sizable lead. By the end of this year I expect a 1.5 million unit lead for PS4. In MS largest market. NA is where MS makes the vast bulk of their sales. So far at least. And right now Sony is building a lead. If it continues through the generation the lead could be as large as 10 million units in six years.

I don't see how MS execs can be happy with their performance so far.

Just curious, but has anyone seen any marketing for Hyrule Warriors yet? We're two weeks out from launch in the States.

With MK8 out of the top 10, I would hope Nintendo would at least try to promote its newest title.

Personally I'm of the mind that MS didn't care at all about any region outside the US, UK and like Australia.
Not so sure about that, atleast at launch.
They advertised the hell out of this console in germany it was literally everywhere. On TV,in newspapers, on trains and posters.

After Titanfall released here they seemed to realize that its a lost cause. Havent seen aXB1 ad here since then.

I wonder if internally X1 is tracking anywhere close to where MS thought/wants. Getting beat every month has to be a bitter pill considering they were spitting out "We Da Best!" PRs every month for over a 2 years lol.

With bundles/promotions/price cuts/free games/Titanfall/NFL marketing and the gap still widening, I don't think it's anywhere near where MS wants; which to say the least is where the PS4 sits.

The XB1 is still ahead of 360 comparing sales from launch, so I'm sure MS is content with this fact. However the comparison is starting to remind me of when NoA would tell people 3DS was tracking ahead of DS. It was for a time but only before DS reached its true lift off point. For hardware comparisons between XB1 and 360, the 360 hasn't really taken off yet. Once it does the XB1 will start falling behind. With PS4 sales taking up a larger chunk this gen versus PS3 last gen it will be tough for MS to match 360 numbers in the USA. MS should be able to hit a respectable number though.

Oh dear. I would imagine this is yet another reason to engage panic mode, since Madden has been a big Xbox game for a while.

At this rate, another Xbone price cut being announced around E3 2015 is a distinct possibility.

Xbox One hasn't yet got a price cut. If anything, the $400 w/o Kinect is more expensive than the $500 with Kinect.

Total domination for PS4 over XB1. Wonder if Sony will do a bundle for GTA V cuz that will move a lot of units.

Why don't we get actual numbers with NPD for platforms and software?

I don't have a XBO, but i consider the console itself good, however, i also think it's still currently suffering from the blunders and mistakes from the MS did last year (Especially their PR); and will probably suffer it for the rest of the generation.

Shame metro redux didn't crack the top ten

Oh man, totally forgot about that! Yes, it's a shame. I'm guilty of not buying it this month :(

As I've said before, I'm not sure it's a price issue (within reason) at this point. Consumers largely may either just not be interested in the product or aren't willing to buy one over the "superior"/hot product as long as long as they're even similarly priced.

All the big deals being thrown around clearly implies it's not.

Yeah, but this is the NPD thread, i.e. dealing with US-only numbers here.

Yeah, true.

I think the XB1 will make up some ground in Oct/Nov/Dec, perhaps massively so given some of the first party (and third) games being launched in that time. I can see things being a lot closer by the end of the year.

The overall positioning of the XB1 is a lot better than even a couple of months ago, it has a much more positive vibe about it now - optimistic even.

God, the numbers are looking awful. I hope it's more than 72%.

damn. halo month should be in MS's favor. what do they have after that, though?

If you mean this November, I doubt a remastered collection of old games is going to mean a hell of a lot in a holiday month. Next year when Halo 5 is out maybe.

Sunset Overdrive bundle will do it!

Sunset and MCC will definitely move a bunch of consoles (although given that they're not doing a bundle for MCC, seems to me Microsoft just wants the money for that sale rather than trying to use it to directly ship systems.) Whether that's enough to make up the momentum is another question. From the analyst numbers (so swallowed with a shaker of salt) the XB1 is not far away from the PS4 in America for this month's sales. I think probably by the end of this gen Xbox will have a healthy NA showing, no problem. But they do seem to have tossed any chance of building on the 360 in other territories.

Halo month won't be in favor of Xbox One.

I just don't think anything can do it this year left for MS.

Frankly they don't have much of a chance of that in the US either anymore.

The 360 launch allined has for months sold better than the XB1 in monthly sales. It just did so much worse when it was launched because it was much more supply-constrained.

XB1 sales are actually quite similar to 360's sales in 2013 which isn't a good thing...
Edit: Funnily enough PS4 sales line up well with 360's sales in 2012 :p

Just got to that part.

Yeah, does not sound particularly good.

FWIW August is just noise month. There are no generally prevailing trends so taking anything away from this month, whether good or bad, is generally going to be unwise.

Next month will be the interesting and indicative one. 2007 September saw more than 1.6million units of consoles moved, excluding hand helds.

As such, their performance in the US has to be hugely disappointing relative to original expectations
Yeah that sounds about right. Gotta wonder if MS will continue to go all out with deals and such when they arent gaining any ground and just treading water. I guess they dont really have a choice.

Agreed. Solid points. It'll be fun to watch (and laugh) as always....hopefully.

It isn't going to come close, even if you throw the handhelds in this time.

Eh MS spent like 20M euro just on the adverting for launch in Spain. MS spends advertising money like crazy. If they really cared they would've spent more time re-positioning themselves in those regions imo

Does anyone have LTD numbers? I'd have to dig for them if not.

PS4 ~ 3760k
XB1 ~ 3047k
WIU ~ 2628.5k

As of August 2nd I believe

Sony can counter that with a GTA V bundle if they can work a deal. That will sell more for sure.
