Summer 2014 Anime |OT3| where everyone watches doremi for hito

Sailor Moon Crystal 6

Normally the cheap look of this show doesn't bother me, but this episode it was especially distracting. So many close and off focus shots, made it feel like I was watching a poorly directed B-movie where people don't actually know how to film... but this is an anime where you intentionally choose to draw that way. If they're trying to make Sailor Moon Crystal feel like a cheap b-movie then mission accomplished...

And reading these Aldnoah Zero impressions

Are you guys serious and not trolling? I quit after episode 10 where they
faked out killing the princess in the shower scene
but 2 episodes later they
actually killed off the princess legit... and Slaine is the reason it happened

Yep F that show

Not only that,
Slaine shot Inaho in the face
. Aldnoah redeemed.

Barakamon 11

Another amazing episode. This is by far the Eccentric Family of this season. Just extremely well done story telling and incredibly likable characters.

This episode we see Sensei
returning home and showing his work to the director
. But of course being him he overreacts in hilarious ways and gets depressed over everything. We also get to formally meet his parents, who are both just oozing personality as much as him with the few minutes of screentime each had. The mom is especially fantastic.

When
the kids called Sensei to cheer him up
I think I might've been just as touched by the act as he was. The strength of the relationship of sensei with the children is largely what drove the show to the heights of greatness it's currently in. The show continues to be the highlight of not-late night Saturday and one of the three shows I still consider amazing among the sea of crap this season.

It's still firmly in second place behind Space Dandy. But man the gap between second and first isn't nearly as big as the one between third and second.

I know about the horrible anime series, but wasn't there a movie on /Stay Night called unlimited blade works? Is that any good?

EDIT: Nevermind, I just found out that it's apparently a clip show of some sorts. In other words, pretty much the same as the other Stay Night.

Also, what about the new one Ufotable is doing that airs soon? Does that one look to be any goodl?

The one coming up is a proper adaptation of the UBW route and yeah it's easily the best route in F/SN, though the narrative is definitely weaker than Zero's I'd say that the characters are far more interesting.

It's not worse than AO. AO gets its own special ranking.

My general rule is that being bad>being boring but AO is a special exception.

I think if you rate both shows as standalone series, Captain Earth is a hell of a lot worse.

I know a lot of people's dismay comes from their feelings on it ruining E7 though. It didn't do that for me, which is why I can easily say Captain Earth is way worse.

Yeah, that's kind of how I feel about it. On its own merits, E7 AO might not exactly have a perfect ending but it's a serviceable enough mecha show with lots of nice sakuga. Captain Earth just promises way too much and fails to deliver on several fronts.

Captain Earth was just a boring/safe mech series that did nothing particularly well or bad, it was just kind of there

Aldnoah Zero is a god damn mess and when you push me to finally drop something you've really fucked up cause I'll sit though damn near everything.

Psycho-Pass 18

I don't think it needs to take an entire episode for us to cover this amount of ground. While scenes like Akane paralyzing Kogami are cool, they're drowned in the show's need to reiterate its conspiracy stuff over and over. I'm also not sure why they still want Makishima brought in alive.

Psycho-Pass 19

I've learned to just roll with the weird Crime Coefficent stuff at this point. Foreigners raise it and will throw the system into disarray? Sure, why not. But it feels lazy to dump all of this information on the audience when none of it has been previously established and have it play a significant role in what appears to be the climax. I'm also not sure how someone actually thought "let's ask an Internet forum!" would be anything but silly.

It's that time again; another package from Rightstuf.

Let's start by showing the $1 cart topper I got, and reading the description...

Now that is super CUTE!

lol no

Earth' s plot was actually comprehensible and didn't retcon itself out of existence. Do I even need to start with how awful Truth was a character? AO's low points, and there were many, were much lower than anything in Earth.

AO wasn't even entertainingly bad. Shit was just offensive. Even thinking of it as standalone, nothing fucking matters. Only episode I can even remember from that series is when
eureka and the gecko showed up.
That was neat I guess.

Cardcaptor Sakura 37

I liked the continuity with the Song episode, and how the solution to that one tied directly into the solution for this one. Also, Tomoyo remains my favorite character. She's a real renaissance woman. Seeing Sonomi again was also a nice treat. She can be overbearing, but she's a good mom. One of my favorite gags was shutting up Yamazaki before he started going on about the false origins of karaoke.

Happiness Charge Precure 33

Iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit's Space Time! That Saiark totally was in Rocket States. Which means that Nadeshiko must be somewhere around here. Megumi helping Mami build her rocket was pretty fun. I'm kinda disappointed that she didn't really unlock Innocent Form, merely searched for it, but on the other hand, I should've seen this coming from the episode title. Next week is a school festival episode, and
Hime really unlocks Innocent Form.

A couple quick checks of character names and staff indicate this:

I liked that show.

Deen is not great for sure. but is not as bad as hater say it. Hater mostly come from VN fan since they are

You know looking at their wikipedia page I simply haven't seen more than a handul of deen shows and I enjoyed all of them. Maybe that in itself is an indightment, that they rarely work on shows I have any interest in.

What show is that?
Arti is correct. Girl's High.

Haha, yeah.

I can take a bad ending of an underperforming show, but to have almost nothing happen for 25 episodes, and a bunch of episodes that could be completely cut from the show without any actual impact on the story, I thought it was way worse.

Truth is just as bad as Salty Dog. In my mind they're close equals; maybe Salty Dog worse for their show-halting escapades. The last run of 8 or so episodes could've been done in 3 if it weren't for them, and their inclusion added nothing of value to the show.

Not to mention how shallow the character development is. Daichi didn't change the entire show. Hana had a switch flipped towards the end and magically gained a personality outside of the cooing sounds she made as a hollow shell of a character she was for the first 17 episodes or so.

AO had a lot more quailty mecha animation, less re-used animation, had a better soundtrack, and at least a few good episodes, which is more than I can say for Captain Earth. I also didn't need a series glossary to watch AO either.

I havent heard of Girls High. Is it worth my time?

The closest thing to it is Seitokai Yakuindomo. It's about a group of friends who have some romance, some honest girl talks and was based on the mangaka's actual experiences. Plus its ED has been parodied a lot.

didn't know Nintendoman was watching one of my favorite anime.

Good. Good. Let the Fate Zero consume you.

I can't believe I didn't continue this a year ago!

I honestly thought that, compared to every other death in the series, that Rider's was the most "noble" way to go. Both sides fully respected each other and were willing to use their capabilities to the fullest to basically just have the king's fight they wanted earlier. It's not like Rider thought he would win, it was a very clearly one sided fight, but he still decided to stay. Thinking of deaths like Lancer's, was Rider's death really that bad?

At least Gil took Iskandar seriously. That means a lot. He only uses Ea on opponents he believes are worthy of his most precious treasure.

Hell, he even spared Waver after saying he wasn't Rider's master, he was his loyal servant.

That shows how great was Iskandar, The King of Conquerors.

*Fate Zero Spoilers*

I guess I wasn't expecting
Rider to go down so easily despite Archer's strength. From what Rider has shown of his strength, I was more or less expecting both of them to be battered and beaten, or for at least Archer to at least take at least a little bit of damage before Rider went down. Seeing Rider go down without getting so much of a scratch on Archer, just felt really heartbreaking. Though that was most likely the point.

Still though, he ranks as one of the manliest characters I've ever seen in an anime. He's just as manly as Kamina and Domon. There was not one scene in this show where he wasn't amazing. His first rampage in episode 11 is one of my favourite moments in this show.

Neon Genesis Fate/Zero - 24

O_O

This man is the freaking Anti-Homura Akemi. I mean, holy shit.

Rider is the embodiment of masculinity, which explains why
he is so fragile.
Ufotable really goes overboard with the digital effects. I don't know why they feel the need to obscure the image to that degree either since they have good traditional animators.
You just can't appreciate all of the digital effects sakuga.

Sounds promising if its like SYD.
I watched the first episode of it waaay back when it was airing and where as SYD plays it straight but in an over the top way for laughs, this was more like playing things straight and hopes that laughter fills the cavernous silence afterwards. Can't recommend it.

Edit: Also, watching Gundam Wing makes me feel old. Switched it to JP voices for a change and hearing how young some of the VAs are is just depressing.

It looks like Funi is putting most of the Barakamon episodes up on their Youtube page, so that might be a better way to watch it when they're all up there over Hulu if you don't like commercials.

Underperforming? heh

You make it seem like AO hadn't long shat the bed before the finale. AO was very poorly written and it was clear that was the case even before we had reached the 2/3rds mark. There's the Elena subplot that the show spent time on and ended in the most anti-climatic way possible. What about Naru? How she magically got abilities and her own garbage subplot? Much of AO could have easily been cut out.

AO had its own version of Salty Dog long in advance. Big Blue World. Truth was much more offensive in that in no way did he fit in the context of the show. Nobody else demonstrated any of his abilities.

And how did Ao develop as a character? Fleur? Elena?

Yes the mecha animation and soundtrack was better but everything was much worse. Oh and AO had a ton of jargon too, which was worse in AO's case as they weren't even consistent with what some stuff was.

Captain Erf 25

This is by far one of the more disappointing shows I've watched because there were clearly nuggets of what could have been a very good show mixed in with "well we have to do this because it's the standard". Having Puck become the ultimate bad guy and having the humans and kiltgang work together to beat him was a perfect direction for the show... Puck needed to have been more relevant up to this point though as opposed to just a horny computer. I don't even think he was in the past 5-7 episodes before he appeared again as the villain.

Completely get rid of Salty Dog, or have the plot line with them resolved WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY earlier in the story line, in the end they added nothing but more drama that distracted from what made the show good (2d human mechs vs 2d alien mechs). I liked the battles on earth in the mini mechs but those fights needed to happen more often and needed to have a weight to them to help them compare with the space battles.

Also the Kiltgang needed FAR more development, outside of the idol and the main two the other 4 get their one episode and completely fall into obscurity until the finale. Speaking of the finale WHY THE HELL did the Kiltgang just stand there doing nothing until Puck had killed half of them before doing ANYTHING to fight against him? Finally who was the girl with the recorder? I guess she was supposed to be god? Why have her character at all if the person who begins to believe in god (Teppei) doesn't actually meet her... also why is this stuff about God thrown in two episodes before the finale.

This show should have been so much more then it was, it had the right ideas it just needed to condense things down and cut the fat. I wouldn't recommend Captain Earth, but I do give it credit for doing completely 2D mech animation that was always fairly impressive in the era of cg crap.

2/5 an average mech series hurt by it's own overly bloated and unfocused plot that felt like they were making it up as they went.

Fate/Zero - 25 END

Wow. What a show. I gotta say, this was a really fun ride from beginning to end.

Though, much like other Urobuchi works, it ends
quite tragically for many of the characters. Kiritsugu is unable to see Illya again. Rin's mother survived, but is now insane. Kirei and Archer are now apparently on a quest for destruction?

Kariya just ended up getting shat on throughout the entire show, from begging to end. I mean, damn. The guy continually has worms devour him and drives his body to the brink of unbearable pain in order to save Sakura...only for Sakura herself to be the one to kill the poor guy at his last breath, saying that he was a fool to go against her grandfather. Never mind Sayaka or Homura, Urobuchi was straight-up heartless with this character.

Though I'm not entierly sure what exactly happened to Saber. Is she dead? I'm pretty sure I saw her on the cover art of Fate/Stay Night or something so she must still be alive. Right?

At least Waver has it okay, and now plans on seeing the world in Rider's honour, so that was pretty neat to see.

In any case, I'm glad I watched this show. And I think I just might join AnimeGAF in watching the new upcoming Fate/Stay Night when it airs.

Psycho-Pass 20

I really like seeing Akane come into her own during the investigation (even if I wanted to punch something when she briefly morphed into Kogami because I as an audience member am apparently brick stupid.) Unfortunately, that's not even 5 minutes long and the rest of the episode consists of more uninteresting chatter that's made even worse by the fact that some of it is completely repeated.

Gundam Wing - 02
Despite threatening to kill her, Relena is still determined that Heero is literally a prince from outer space who rides a white horse.

Meanwhile one of the other pilots decides the best way to be inconspicuous about a Gundam is to drive it around on a gigantic truck with a cover over it because that's what teenagers do and isn't obvious at all.
Stuff happens and then Heero ends up face down unconscious in water where no-one helps him and somehow doesn't die.

I need to just accept this is Gundam and move on. Is having a Char clone a mandatory thing for all Gundam series?

We've reached the point where we're arguing about which crappy BONES anime is worse.

Time for the new season to start.

I guess we can just call both of them shit and move on.

Finished up Aldnoah.

My favorite show this year, Slaine is probably my favorite character of the year. Cannot fucking wait to see where S2 goes.
