Resident Evil has completely changed from survival horror to action

RE4 came out in '04/05 though and RE5 is 5-6 years old.

I did not see the indie craze happening at all. Nor did I see me actually enjoying a Capcom game again at the time (based dragons dogma) and of course REmake HD.

That is awesome. Following the same trend (not my opinion but the majority of GAFs)

Sony leading next gen.

Thanks sooo much for this!

Laughed hard at this:
My prediction is Ouya becomes a Big 4th.

Disney buys Star Wars from George Lucas and gives the license to EA who has DICE make Battlefront 3. Then Amy Hennig joins the Dead Space folks to make a new Star Wars title.

It's so funny to see how everyone was writing Sony off.

Especially this guy:

The PS4 will do worse than the VITA, they have lost to much brand recognition, exclusives and they have IPs noone gives a shit about besides nerds on the internet. Coupled with no backwards compatibility (due to the abandonment of the Cell), Sony is destined for last place again. Failing all that, the PS4 will be $499-$549 and we will get a repeat of the PS3 but this time it will be much worse.

Quote me in 2 or 3 years. I know when something is about to bomb. Sony is very easy to read, even Patcher can do it.

hahaha

-I never thought Monolith soft would make a mediocre game, but then they went and made xenoblade.
- I never thought region lock would carry on to the next gen.

Me playing PC only without the slightest thought to ever touch a console again.

This is true for me. Rare PC gamed before the beginning of this year until I made my own rig. Can't even remember the last time I played a game on consoles, and no intention to buy either PS4 or One.

- Rock band and music games will be dead
- Sports games like Skate, Tennis, Golf not being made
- Nvidia out of console market
- Sony 1st/2nd party studio count keep shrinking. Insomniac making games for MS !!
- Sony exiting the hand held market.
Pretty much.

-MS would blow all their dudebro capital chasing a demographic that only buys consoles every 20 years, and now will probably never buy consoles again.

The next smash bros game being good

Nintendo hosting smash bros tournaments
Really? Brawl wast just 1 yeae old that time, that's pretty cynical.

I think that sony would screw up their next handheld was and is still shocking to me.
PSP was such a great machine, I still liked my Ds more but it may be my favorite PlayStation platform. To think that Sony is now pulling the plug for the Vita, it doesn't give me the faith to buy and support one.
I remember, I used to play a lot games from THQ...

Mass Effect 2 having that ending (okay, the concept made sense, but it was such a wtf in the game itself). And the game becoming somewhat boring in between because of pokemonning. I mean, I enjoyed all those backwater planets in the first. How can this become boring from a lack of SPACE of all things? (and there's the plot:"that guy from the first game? He died on the way to his home planet. BUT HE"S OKAY NOW. We proudly present ROBOCOP 2!" *scream of agony* )

and then you got Mass Effect 3. Never forget Marauder Shields.

I really thought we would have the Sci-Fi we'd been waiting for with this and Dead Space. :(
(though Dead Space and the first Mass Effect delivered what they intended, the second DS did as well. It's the sequelitis that gets them eventually. You can't make something good on repeat. See Assassin's Creed, and yes I am counting from the first, not the second. )

Speaking of which: Call of Duty becoming everything wrong with how we deal with violence and imagery EVER. I mean: that first level of Black Ops 2: shooting fleeing black people in the back? OH YEAH IT'S FUCKING GREAT.
And MW3..... "do whatever this man says"...

You know what I really never expected: to be done with this hobby.

edit: to clarify, I am dissapointed with the results of ME, but I am offended by CoD-like shooters these days. Notable exception obviously being Spec Ops the Line.

The most wildly successful games of the last few years are a couple of indie titles (Minecraft and Angry Birds), a toy delivery system (Skylanders), and a genre based on a fan mod (Dota and League of Legends).

By the way, I did an informal conversational survey of a couple hundred Turkish high school students, and the most popular game was easily League of Legends. I also have yet to see a Wii U in stores in this country.

For me to lose all faith in both Capcom and Sega, to the point I almost don't care what they put out anymore.

Pretty tough tough to think about, because those two companies are largely the reason why I am a gamer today.

I never expected people to reward IAP timer games with real money and abandon traditional game models on mobile. I was really hoping that whole design philosophy would die out.

I never expected a Polish studio to be developing my dream game (Cyberpunk 2077).

I had enough money to afford PS4 on day one.

What? You never expected this?

I love my Vita, but the writing was on the wall ever since it was in the rumour stages.

It's understandable. PSP sold remarkably well even if software never did well, so the fact that Vita can barely cross ten million is a surprise to some of us. Vita and Wii U are sisters when you look at how their lives are playing out.

I never expected to buy a nintendo system or have it as my only console

That I'd pass up next gen consoles in favor of PC gaming

Edit: also never expected that the Vita would be my only regretable gaming purchase ever.

Check out this post, lol.

This one is better.

Sony: it's going to be a struggle. I look at the position Sony is in this generation compared to last gen and I have a lot of issues with them. It doesn't seem like they're 6 years removed from being a completely dominant force in the industry about to launch a highly anticipated followup to the most successful console of all time. It feels more like 20. Everything has been changed from Sony's position. They don't have the same instant cache they have by just being Sony. They aren't going to have developers just jumping on with early exclusives, why should they when there is no guarantee the userbase will be there? I think that instead you're going to see more exclusives go to MS and to Nintendo rather than to Sony.

I think that Sony still doesn't truly accept the idea that they need to regain and rebuild trust. Its not about humbling Sony, its about Sony understanding the position they're in and reverting to what works and making a developer friendly environment at a price consumers are willing to buy into early to build that userbase up as quickly as possible. Its about having that killer game at launch or as early as possible that will FORCE consumers to jump on board... and I don't know that Sony gets that. I don't think they succeeded with doing that with the Vita and I think that is a serious problem.

Minus the killer game, you can arguably say that's exactly what Sony did do.

I never expected Microsoft to screw up the successor to the 360.

This generation was theirs to lose and... they lost it.

WTF were they thinking? Surely one of the biggest gaming industry missteps of all time

So many idiots saying Sony will drop out of the console race. I realize retrospect is 20/20, but how did the 70-80 million PS3s (or whatever it was at the time) lead people to that conclusion? Sony has yet to produce a flop console.

I know mentioning Vita here is snagging low hanging fruit, but...

I'd known about the popularity of MOBAs since the golden age of WC3 custom maps but had no idea they would come to take over everything. Relatedly, I think most people looking forward to SC2 expected a far more vibrant custom maps scene than what we got, but the problems were apparent as soon as the editing tools were released in beta. And speaking of SC2, I certainly didn't expect the niche of e-sports to become as widely spectated as a form of entertainment as it is now; in most communities I observed there used to be quite a bit of resistance among the player base to the idea of professional players or watching instead of playing. Now, awareness of Twitch streaming and organized tournaments is practically an expectation in any burgeoning multiplayer scene.

I didn't expect paid DLC (still new and strange in 2009) to someday be so ubiquitous as to a) make it into Mario Kart, b) be praised for it, and c) entice me to pre-purchase it months before release.

The greatest unexpected convenience in the past five years, personally, was the explosion of good, well supported native ports of most high-profile PC games into OS X, available via dual-platform purchase on SteamPlay with more reasonable prices and DRM than the array of digital vendors who used to rule that notoriously overpriced market. The idea of using a MacBook as a decently performing games PC without having to dual-boot into Windows or wait years for undiscounted ports was unthinkable five years ago.

I can say I fully expected Zynga to crash and burn.

A handheld would exist that I actually play more than my consoles. Unthinkable before the Vita for me. This also ties in to my second one. I never would have expected there to be a time when I play and like more indies than AAA games.
