This is how what I imagined what that author of the Polygon article looked like when writing it.

On the Giant Bombcast last night Brad hinted that he had heard that this game started out as a Batman game. Wonder if that's true?

It's been floating around for a while that Shadow of Mordor originally started off as a Batman game that took place in the same universe as the Nolan Batman trilogy.

I thought it said I unlocked the ability to pull of multiple finishing moves in succession after I completed a sword challenge (white sword on the map). But I can't figure out how to do it and I can't find anything referencing this ability in the menu.... Anyone know how to do this?

From what I'm understanding here if I want a challenge I should be going on with the story? I've only done two story missions and the orc captains aren't a challenge at this point. Being swarmed by 20+ orcs is a challenge though lol. Like with arkham the biggest issue with the combat system is the player itself. You WANT to ignore that counter option and instead get away/attack the orc instead. But man. I can't wait to get that wraith power that sends a Shockwave around you. Because that'd be great to escape a huge group of orcs.

You didn't unlock it. The game is just letting you know that keep earning money and spending points on sword and you can eventually buy that particular skill. There's one for daggers and bows as well.

Ah, okay! That makes sense. I'll try that and see if it's still intuitive enough for me. Thanks!

If you turn both FX+Prompts off the only visual cue you have for a counter is the enemy's actual wind-up. As far as I can tell the only thing it still leaves in as prompts go are those stars above an enemy's head when they're dizzy and ready to be finished.

that's a damn shame. We have way too many Morality/Piety Police, and they're all as phony as a 8 dollar bill! "Oh noooo he kissed his wife the same way he kills his enemies..." Some people just look for stuff to "attempt" to show how righteous they are. It seems some folks are just looking for something to point their fingers at, and condemn. Pathetic...really, pathetic.

I'm not sure where you're getting the "morality police" aspect from. He mentions the fact that the wife gets fridged for one sentence and then goes into a long discussion about how games have gameplay as their most effective means to communicate emotions to their players and how he feels that this scene is a failure of that connection.

This is the central argument of the article:

Games can make us feel those different emotions. They’re that powerful. They have the tools to do that through their lighting and their animation and their context and most importantly and sneakily, through the way we actually control them. When a designer or animator gives up and decides to use the same controls and animations for two actions that couldn’t be more different it’s a giant wasted opportunity.

It’s squandering the most powerful tools at our disposal. It’s even worse when a designer actually conflates the two contexts as Shadow of Mordor does, saying that a sneaky kiss and a stealth kill are the same, that one is training for the other. In doing so, it throws away any possibility of real emotional relation to your in-game-character’s wife.

It has nothing to do with being righteous or an appeal to morality.

Oh god, I think I'm boned. I screwed myself so hard, I got a 20 power warchief with 2 bodyguards one of wich is also 20 power and the other is 19. How do I deal with this? They all have hard as fuck to exploit weaknesses. The 20 power bodyguard is only weak to fire, how do I bring fire to him? Or does it have to be on site?

Good point. Any romance options in this game? I'm not normally so into orcs but when times are hard...
I personally am having an amazing three way romance in this game. I have spent many intimate moments with my sword, my bow and my dagger. They even have names and I have gone so far as to personalize them with runes. I love them all so much.

Wait, the Orc Lord I killed came back? Shit. What is this madness.
You're supposed to beat them by decapitation/piercing them in the head with a finisher. If not there's a slight chance that if their will is strong enough that they will come back. And if they come back once they can come back again. Voila you have a nemesis.

Got the chance to play this for a couple hours today and it's fucking great. It seems like this is the stealth game that Assasin's Creed always tried to be.

I think they come back even if you pierce them in the head. The only sure fired way is to decap 'em.

Fire arrows are your best friend.

Ground finisher annoy me as hell.

I stabbed those orcs in the chest but it did no damage because my animation didn't finish yet.

I think on the Army of Sauron screen, if an orc is just spread out that means they are coming back, if instead it has their head on spikes I think that means really dead, but not 100% sure yet.

My copy arrived today, and I played for a few hours this afternoon. The game is superb so far and I'm happy that it looks surprisingly nice for a cross gen title on PS4. There's tons of stuff to do and as someone who still likes the Ubisoft open world formula, this game is right up my alley. The nemesis system even makes it superior to most other open world objective and collectible driven games.

Hmm, wonder if that'll be too hardcore for me. I'll give it a shot.

The music in this game is so damn good.

Really? I'm pretty disappointed so far, it's nowhere near as epic as the movie score, for example.

I do love the music that plays in the upgrade menu, reminds me of Inon Zur's stuff for Prince of Persia 2008.

The MC's face seems so low poly a lot of the time, coupled with some weird shading (Or lack thereof) in the texture. I don't know, it just looks..bad.

I'm enjoying it at least. The main menu music when you first load up the game is excellent in my opinion, like a louder and more powerful version of God of War.

Man sometimes it's so hard to control that fucking ranger, wanna climb down a ledge he gets stuck, wanna go up during a big fight he does a doge, wanna chase a guy fucking dude cannot sprint...

Doesn't help that the camera gets fucking insane at times, game is easy but I'm pretty much batting the controls at this point :/
