Underrated SNES Games

HGH

Thanks a ton to whoever mentioned Metal Marines. I've been racking my brain for "that one robot strategy game on the SNES" for a while now.

It sounds like Seiken Dentesu 3(Secret of Mana 2 JP version).

Anyway for there to play a English translated copy?

Aeon Genesis made a translation patch a while back but the game has never seen an official English release, whether on the SNES or the VC. It's likely never to leave due to some elements I think.

I've probably played through it more than any other game. Clever puzzles and it has an amazing atmosphere, helped no end by the soundtrack: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rvlotQMUX5c

This game was a fun top-down ARPG like Secret of Mana or Link to the Past. You played as the titular character, who was a vampire prince. It was super fun and fairly hard.

Unfortunately, it isn't on VC.

I'm not sure if the two Addams Family platformers ("The Addams Family" and "Pugsley's Scavenger Hunt") are underrated, but I'll assume they are since I don't see them talked about that much. But yeah, those are two that I absolutely love.

They aren't on the VC but they're cheap games to get if you've got a SNES.

I don't know if it fits the OP's description because Glory of Heracles III: The Silence of the Gods is actually very esteemed in Japan by critics and fans, who consider its scenario one of the best ever. But I guess you can say it is underrated in the West where just not many people even know about it.

The sequel and second Glory of Heracles game for the SNES, GoH4: A Gift from the Gods, however definitely is underrated. It is kind of like the FFVIII of the GoH series. Coming off the legendary third game that greatly impressed the people who played it, GoH4 couldn't help but pale in comparison. Still, it does many interesting new things to set itself apart from its predecessor, in all major fields like story, gameplay and graphics. So the general opinion of it being lacking is not really justified, it is a great game in its own right.

Mystical Ninja Geomon.

Had no idea what the story was about because I got the JP version, but man this game is super fun. You go from side scrolling, to RPG town beat them up, to power rangers like boss mech battles. A single picture doesn't do the game justice AT ALL.

funny thing is that the third Goemon game for snes is one of the best games in the snes library and yet unreleased for the west. :(

Goemon 3 is a Zelda III-esque adventure game with sidescrolling elements. The game is damn good because I remember me and my friend playing this even though we had no idea what the text said.

If you never played this you're missing out on some crazy customization

Came here to post this. Glad someone else did it first. Quintet RPG with decent graphics, funny characters, a wacky plot and a Pokemon-like battle system with customizable robots.

Super Adventure Island:

While the gameplay wasn't anything innovative from the regular Adventure Island style, the music by Yuzo Koshiro is so damn good and the best part whole game.

So many, many hours...

Yes!

Koei made tons of sim games during the SNES era, but a particularly good and accessible one is Aerobiz Supersonic. The subject matter of managing an airline sounds horrible, but trust me it's a really fun game. Weirdly you can play this 4 player, so there's an odd way to spend a drunken evening with friends.

YES!

This is one of the best series ever made. I would LOVE to see a reboot. Come on, KOEI. Come on!

Equal in quality to Link to the Past.

That's right.

Glad this was mentioned as well. A fantastic game.

I eventually mastered this game. Another good one! Very similar to Defender of the Crown.

A lot of people recognize this games' quality, but it's almost never mentioned by anyone, so I consider it to be underrated. Easily one of the best action/RPG's I've ever played in my life.

Easily one of my favs. Really wish they localized Terranigma, the last game in the trilogy, which is my pick in regards to the OP's topic.

Holy fuck, was this game awful, and HARD, like, really really REALLY HARD.

One touch deaths? CHECK

Limited continues? CHECK

Re-start the damn level if you continued? CHECK

And for god sake I LOVED THE DAMN GAME!! None of my friends could ever finished it, in fact i was the only one of my group of friends that ever finished it.

Loved the music though. That's always something that always stayed with me.

Warning. If you suffer of vertigo or motion sickness don't watch the next video.

This game has the strangest use of parallax scrolling and color palette choice.

Cybernator.

It's hard, but it's great fun platforming as a huge mech. And it's very well made.

cybernator-04.png

About a year ago I decided I wanted to replay this and got my ass handed to me. I decided to buckle down and relearn how to play it. Felt so good when I beat it again. I remember one summer I was bored after beating it probably 100 times I just randomly was goofing off and failed a bunch of missions and totally freaked out when I got a different ending.

You're better off get an uncensored English translation repro of Assault Suits Valken instead of this mutilated western version.

That's some insane import elitism right there. Removing
the suicide
= mutilated? Come on now.

Nedry's trolling:

Shame I can't find a pic of "touch the electric fence for a free life"

Treasure of Rudras by squaresoft is my contribution to this thread I played it many years ago though I never did beat it (gonna get back to that eventually) it had a pretty innovative magic system where you create the name of your spells and the effects are based on what you name them.

These were 2 of my FAVS

Yes, Jurassic Park was a great great game. Had elements of open world design and first person sections (mouse controlled no less!), was really ahead of its time. Also, one of the Ren & Stimpy games was really good, but I forget which one.

Those are some of my favorite lesser known games for the SNES.

This thread has convinced me to finally try the Goemon games.

So many, many hours...
I like how that dude is literally calling the shots.

My mom bought that game for me as a surprise when I was in third grade. It was the first time I had ever experienced a first person view in a game. I had no clue what was happening at first, haha. I was looking for Grant on screen, couldn't find him, them pushed some buttons... And I suddenly realized what I was looking at. Blew my little nine year old mind.

Didn't like the game much, though. Having to restart from the beginning felt really tedious to me at the time. What is this, an NES game? Put a battery in that shit.

This version specifically. Everyone always talks about Final Fight vs Streets of Rage. This is better than both.

Also not better than Final Fight or Streets of Rage, but fun as fuck

Looney Tunes B-Ball

Try to play 2-player with this. It's pretty fun.

My Oedipus brought back the Looney Tunes B-Ball.

To contribute, actually I'm not sure. The majority of SNES I remember fondly are first party Nintendo titles which are all well recognized. The more obscure ones it's hard for me to recommend as I didn't even finish most of them. Ah, Tiny Toons Wacky Sports Challenge was lots of fun.

I never really understood the objective of the Jurassic Park game as a child I just wanted to kill dinosaurs and stuff. Then it had those FPS Doom sections, the game was weird it had GREAT music though.

Hagane+SNES+box.png

This game destroyed me hard as a kid it's just Shinobi on SNES but with them Keita Amemiya designs. So good.
