I'm curious as to who's brought back as a hologram now.

The 360 of course. Most disrespected member of the crew.

They'll meet the parallel universe 360 later though, who is charismatic and successful in Japan, and has the catchphrase "RROD me a kipper, I'll be back before Halo 5"

(oh crap Log4Girlz made a better joke during my edit)

Oh yes, I can definitely appreciate that the long term horizon is a bit far off to have a really indepth discussion.

I just wanted to clarify that my concerns aren't immediate, and that when I'm pessimistic it's not really "This will do awfully in six months." or "The 4DS will bomb off the face of the earth.", but more that I'm just looking at a trend line both in worldwide sales and publisher behavior and feeling that it's not super rosy, since to an extent the discussion does enter that arena in the thread from time to time. I only bring it up from time to time because when people talk about "Everything is dead.", that's something that happened over a very long time, and the check for the statement would be "Well, are they heading in a direction that looks bad, or is there currently a strong reason to believe change is coming?".

Obviously things have a very large window in which they can change.

As for this Fall, the 3DS I feel is holding well for an imminent new device release and it's certainly showing a lot of software strength. There is demand for the content on the system certainly.

Oh, I'm percectly fine with tha point of view. it is also mine, at the end.
I just think that Mpl90 post about "it's premature to be scared about next Nintendo handheld" was right.

I'm really happy about it, but thinking about it I wonder why God Eater 2 RB is coming to PS4. The genre is more popular on handhelds and already has a userbase on the Vita, and it just doesn't seem to be a thing Namco would do.

Maybe Sony is helping Japanese devs get on PS4 :)

At this point I'd suspect GE is heavily subsidized by Sony on all platforms.

Ahahaha KH2.5 way lower than 1.5 and they definately botched some of the western sales with PS3 only release too.

Great job.

Then again it might just mean the Japanese players have a good taste since KH1>all.

Said it before will say it again.

KH remakes would do better on Vita in Japan.

Maybe some marketing deal (+royalties advantages?) and Sony generally shifting their focus/money away from PSV to PS4. It will be interesting to see what happens with this rather handheld focused IPs in a few years.

If MGSV, FFXV and RE7 were releasing relatively close to each other in 2015 then there would be more hope. Can MGSV alone sustain PS4 sales for the first half of 2015?
Bloodbourne and Persona 5 should help as well. And hopefully Dragon Quest Heroes.

I'm hoping that it means that Bandai is gearing up for a Western release.....please.

Have we gotten any new info at all since TGS? For P5 and DQH that is.

Absolutely no way this is happening, as RE7 is probably a(n October) 2016 release at the earliest (I doubt they'll have 3 RE games within the same year).

All the hardware numbers are total fucking dogshit. Hopefully the New 3DS injects some life back into the proceedings, but I don't expect that to last long. -_-

I never expected the Japanese market to contract this badly. Hope they aren't ahead of a WW trend.

I wonder if the New 3DS could somehow push 3DS over its 2013. I honestly don't see it even with the huge releases....

Didn't Forza Horizon 2 also come out?

Japan has such shit taste, smh

They just got a Forza game less than a month ago, dude.

I can't think of a series I like SO MUCH that I'd just rush out and pay new-game prices for the October game it less than a month after I already paid new-game money for the September release, and I'm not even done exploring/mastering that game yet.

The PS3/Vita and PSP/Vita tactic seems to have worked out well for the system so not at all surprised with Sony attempting the same with PS3/PS4 (via DQH and P5).

Doubt it, considering what Capcom is doing with Panty Raid and the mainline series being known for high production values. I expect them to go all in with the new gen.

Revalations 2 is a low budget game in general and might even have been a canceled 3DS project so I wouldn't take it as an indication of anything.

Ps4 has never been through the holyday season yet.

sony hardware, like all hardware, does better during the holidays, but it never gets the same push that nintendo hardware gets. and this year there isn't a single major release from what i can tell that would push numbers in the later months. the system should hit 1 million for this year (hopefully), but things won't pick up until games people want are out on the system. this means metal gear solid v, final fantasy type-0 hd, dragon quest heroes, dragon quest x, dragon quest xi, final fantasy xv, kingdom hearts 3, etc

i kind of wonder if even that fanbase is there yet or if even in japan the niche xbox 360 crowd jumped on the much-more western ps4.

nope. no way, we had this discussion last week: we are looking at possible better performance YoY just for the Oct-Dec timelaps.
To surpass the entire 13 YtD the (N)3DS should sell more than 3 millions in three months. No other console ever was able to do that, neither the DS I suppose (three consecutive months over the million mark)

How much did KH 1.5 open at?
2.5 Seems low, but the franchise does more in the west, so we'll see

As Napalm Frank said:

MC:
02./00. [PS3] Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 ReMIX <RPG> (Square Enix) {2013.03.14} (¥6.980) - 128.414 / NEW

Famitsu:
01./00. [PS3] Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 ReMIX <RPG> (Square Enix) {2013.03.14} (¥6.980) - 131.940 / NEW

And the game will most definately suffer in the west due to the platform of choice.

PS3 only will hurt KH2.5 a bit.

Not having a good release ready for the holidays was a huge misstep on Sony's part for sure.

Here's hoping they do a relaunch of sorts in the region early next year to coincide with the release of Bloodborne or MGSV (we are expacting this in the first quarter right?). Like they did with Vita's price drop and Soul Sacrifice.

They seriously can't drag their feet in the region, the need to be aggressive.

Japan really dislikes Donkey Kong now

Clearly Nintendo doesn't understand the demand for female characters. :p
With these figurines and how well FE:Awakening sold, they don't understand the appeal of dating sim elements.

I'll wait 2015 before calling ps4 dead

3DS' worst year by far confirmed. It's halved its usual sales in its two biggest regions (US, Japan) and seems to have dropped off in most other regions.

New 3DS needed to have been a much bigger revision to do something....

Considering that at earliest RE7 is 2016 game I really don't think so. PS3 will be completely dead in west and it's not a worth of those some extra 100-200k sales in Japan to compromise the visuals of RE7 (cross gen shackles) against current gen western juggernauts. I actually think that cross gen for MGSV was also mistake. Ground zeroes already sold way better on current gen worldwide and that was just few months after the launch of these consoles. Also considering how MGSIV sold just fine on PS3 despite it being on life support in Japan 2008 I think the core base for MGS titles is rather stable in Japan. Cross gen shackles make it just harder to compete against western current gen games in west.

Kinki no Magna didn't do half-bad. Niche game with modest debut and the possibility of having legs (the first Rune Factory had strong legs). It will sell its first shipment, which is nice. Rune Factory is not in danger, though.

Omega Quintet tanked as well as Gust-bonanza on PSV.

Not sure if you know that, but Motorsport and Horizon are very very different games. Trying to come up with a comparison, it'd be like having NSMB and a 3D Mario release a month apart, so to say. Sure it cuts into the sales but fans of the respective series know what they want.

This is likely its high point in the ytd comparison for the rest of the year.

that's the reason why they did the N3DS, I think. We'll see how it will pay off, but some of us is expecting th see a better Q4 in Japan than last year. That would not be bad. Plus, it's also its fourth (?) year on the market, and it's pretty usual to see a decline. Half of last year would be an harsh decline, let's see how the revision and the holidays will affect sales

KH is really low. What happened? SE wait too long?

maybe PS3 is not so hot as in 2013, maybe the game included are less interesting than the first 1.5 episode, maybe the quality of the HD miscellaneous port 1.5 was not so appreciated by many? Just wondering

KH is really low. What happened? SE wait too long?

PS3 sw sales are declining (though in Japan PS4 was not a good alternative... Maybe a multi PS3/PSV could have helped to reach at least the first one's sales); lack of novelty (KH1.5 was basically the first KH on home console since 2006, though a remastered); maybe KH2 is not as appreciated as the first one (though it sold more).

My copy of *ω* should arrive before the weekend.

RE7 is one of the few I think won't be on PS3 because 1.) It's waaaaaaaay more Western oriented than two of those franchises, 2.) I feel Metal Gear is on PS3 because it was already there when it started development a zillion years ago, and perhaps most importantly 3.) Panta Rhei's performance requirements are way beyond the PS3, so unless they're not going to use their own new technology, I don't really see that being feasible.

Oh, I'm percectly fine with tha point of view. it is also mine, at the end.

Yeah, I think we need to see how the line-up pans out as the system is actually unveiled to have a solid sense of what the general mood is in the industry. Third parties can commit and aggressively boost a system if they really want to.

I'm curious to hear the next wave of fiscal calls as well since we should start getting more strategy updates as a lot of them don't have a real conference in the Summer.

I know this and wondered if someone would be silly enough to bring that up.

Releasing Mario platformers less than a month apart would still be a pretty stupid idea, saleswise.

(...Though Mario is on a completely different level of selling power than Forza so I'm not sure how fair of a comparison that is.)

Pretty much the calm before the storm for the 3DS before the arrival of the New 3DS. So looking forward to see next week numbers, plus Monster Hunter 4 release this saturday as well so it will definitely sell a few units here and there :p

Smash is doing damn good! All this weeks on 1# is a good sign for the Wii U version.

Yeah, I've heard a lot of disappointing things about Kinki. It's currently sitting at 2 out of 5 stars average with 60+ reviews on amazon.jp..not that that really accounts for all that much though I guess, but I've heard a lot of discontent about it on 2ch.

RF isn't in danger though considering some of the titles (Mainly Frontier and ToD wii) sold only like.. 18k and 10k in their first week, so I'm not too worried about the future of RF or anything personally.

RF4 also sold 200k+, so that's likely the reason why Marvelous keep some of Neverland staff and funded its next project. RF5 will be a 2015 title imo.

I wouldn't be surprised in the least if MH and the New 3DS didn't prevent another YoY decline. Given how it's still down by 50% it'd take a monumental, lasting sales spike just to catch up.

As to the health of the console market here in the west, I'm not really worried about that.

Youkai Watch 2 is already the 14th* best selling third-party game in Japan. Its weekly sales haven't slowed down (this is the 5th consecutive week selling in the 60.000 range) and it will comfortably cross the 3 million mark by year's end. We won't know what can be its ceiling until January or February once the holiday push is gone.
