Scam DIY Portable N64 on Kickstarter is a Scam

I don't think it's a scam, but it's obvious that he's just someone who likes to tinker around. I'd be hesistant to pledge for his project, since he's quite clearly far from being a professional. Just looking at his Kickstarter page(s) is enough to see that.

Check Keyser's post. The dude has stolen pics from 2011 and used them for his own campaign.

IndieGoGo have removed a mirror of the campaign uploaded to their site...

Well done!

Hopefully Kickstarter wake up soon, as they are obviously not safeguarding their users here

If you guys have a kickstarter account, might be a good idea to report this to them (you can do this at the bottom of the page).

That snes isn't a mod but rather a product you can buy. I think its around $80.
Really? I must own that! Is it actually any good though? No emulation and the correct parts and everything? Gonna google that right away!
Edit: battery life is 2,5 hrs... Even my vita lasts longer then that. At 75 dollar its hella cheap though.

At first I was thinking this came assembled for $200 and was actually considering it. But I have to take apart an N64 and solder everything together? No thanks.

I have to ask: Why not just buy a device that has controls and a N64 emulator?

What has a controller and an n64 emulator? Your smartphone doesn't plus you have original hardware with the same controller sticks/buttons which makes it viable for speedrunning. Speedrunning you can't do on a emulator due to varying speeds. Plus its just cool XD

Just like anything sold ever.

Except when I bought my phone I didn't have to also put it together.

Not that it matters. This isn't likely an outright scam, but dude is just going to send everyone a pencil case, screen, and a handful of parts and say, "now put it together using your own Nintendo 64 and controller."

But that was a given from the start.

So the guy's raised $1200 already and it's only the start of his campaign. Six people have already ordered these suspicious kits that probably will never actually be delivered. Should we do something about this now that we've ascertained this is almost certainly a scam? TBH I don't think this guy ever intends to ship the rewards/kits. I think he's planning on a take the money and run approach knowing that Kickstarter can't do anything to him. Just kind of feel sad to see so many people losing quite significant sums of money.

One thing of which I'm admittedly somewhat uncertain is whether he actually does plan to ship the kits but he's buying the parts for cheaper than $200 to make a profit. Failing that there is the very likely possibility he will ship nothing. Technically either way it's still a scam.

The way Kickstarter works, no money will be taken from backers until the end of the campaign. So, Kickstarter have 27 days to act before anyone gets harmed. I have faith they will figure it out before then.

Ah right cool to know. Just wondered whether anyone wanted to actively report him. You're right though. No way does this go a month without getting shut down.

I've always wondered how are companies able to sell these rejiggered systems, especially ones like this that use the same branding/logos etc? I see those systems sold that play both Genesis and SNES games, so what kind of loophole are these groups using to be able to sell these without being gutted by Nintendo, Sega, whoever?

The patents have expired for the snes and genesis hardware which is why clone systems are legal (still cant use logos tho). I don't think the n64 patent is expired.

The new image is a N64 motherboard photo, which (according to Google) existed on 67 sites before he used it.

Here are a few

http://n64.icequake.net/
http://retrogameandcomputer.com/nintendo-64-game-console.php
http://electronics.howstuffworks.com/n642.htm
http://www.neoseeker.com/forums/21/t1404807-does-nintendo-64-have-socketed-processor/
http://nsider2.com/forums/index.php/topic/591621-n64-controller-port-help/

No idea where it originated from though, as it is so vague, but also due to its vagueness I have no idea why anyone would back the project anymore - at least the photos he originally stole were kinda cool.

NOTE: He has written this as part of his own Kickstarter text,,,,

Pledges will use their existing N64 console for the components needed.

....so the N64 motherboard photo actually symbolizes something backers would already own if the project was in fact real.

I hope he updates again.

The Pencil Boxes he now lists as part of his Kickstarter seem to be sourced from India (for some reason). The company name is Cuckoo Plastic, you can buy here.

Seems a long way to go to get a case for a Portable N64

I am not even bothering with the other images, as this whole thing is now comical, and the only sad part of the whole endeavor is that Kickstarter have still not suspended funding for this whole mess.

Keyser Soze, you're a hero. I will PM a mod. Sorry for wasting everyone's time!

Thanks, but there is no reason to say sorry - you gave me something to get mad about for a day at least :p

Although this is a good warning that not everything that goes up on Kickstarter should be trusted - and the fact that they still have not done anything about it does not make me feel too good about the way they run the site.

I wonder if the Kickstarter creator is reading this thread - as a few of the changes he made to the listing came quick on the heels of people mentioning things here.

If Nicholas Sallee is reading... HELLO!!
