Amusing read.

Someone should pledge like $1 just to post warning messages for other backers to read (although I often don't bother reading those messages).

The N64 hardware patents expire next year, so you can wait for clones to pop up. Or ask portable makers on benheck/bacteria/modretro to make one for you.

Sadly people are still donating - even with the creator now forced to change to new nondescript photos...

Actually, the more I think about this, a "My First Console" type project, letting a parent build a working console with their child, is a great idea. It could help them understand a lot things in regards, electronics, building/making, and problem solving.

No wonder there are a few backers out there, as it is a nice idea. It is just a pity there is likely no truth to this incantation.

The patents have nothing to do with clones being made. Just because they're up next year you won't see a bunch of clones on the market. Not to mention n64 emulation isn't good and a piece of hardware built around that isn't going to be very viable.

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.
Nintendo is probably working on the cease and desist paperwork as I write this.

You're talking about the company that filed patents for emulation... in an attempt to stop existing emulators. Of course they are.

Well, as Keyser Soze posted it's definitely a complete scam. However it's trending to reach its funding goal and regardless of people reporting him Kickstarter are yet to shut him down.

Hope the backers don't get burned which is almost certainly going to happen at the moment. I was hoping Kickstarter would have done something by now but not only did they approve his campaign they're not taking any further action to take it down.

At least not yet anyway.

So.... Is it a scam because of the price or does it just not work?

1. It's not his design
2. He stole the the design.
3. It's 200$ for probably less than 60$ worth of materials.
4. You have to have engineering skills already to even attempt to put this thing together.
5. You have to already own an N64 that you will have to destroy in order to build this thing.
7. A pencil box case... really?

Well I reported him. Perhaps it will be enough for Kickstarter to take notice by now with everybody else complaining.

Even if it was his design, though, $200 for all those items together and you have to dismantle an existing N64 and piece it together yourself? What a fucking joke.

Even if this is a real kit, if you're good enough to assemble this then you're going to be able to sort out the parts yourself. It's a ridiculously complex project.

There was a kickstarter for a DIY arcade machine that ended successfully. Looks pretty cool.

You really only need basic knowledge for something like this.

Lmao, destroying my N64 isn't on my to do list. :p

Gamnesia have posted a news story inviting people to back the Kickstarter showing no concern over its validity...

...and news has spread a bit more too.

That Facebook link at least references this thread questioning the validity of the Kickstarter

With those news items, the Kickstarter has received loads more backers as a result...

Regardless of how it started, the Kickstater is currently a collection of photos found on Google Image Search, and is still garnering pledges.

It's bad because all it has to do is garner the remaining 40% or so in the next 23 days and the creator will get access to the funds for better or for worse

I'll report the kickstarter and see if that helps

How is this still active :-(

Also, isn't relisting a failed Kickstarter against TOS:

(Creator) Nicholas Sallee said:
Thanx for sharing the campaign Kelsey, now we just have to meet our goal to fund the project. I don't see there being an issue however if for some reason we fall short I will start another campaign and lower the goal. Regardless we will figure out a way for everyone to get what they pledged for. Thanks again!

Ugh, that's awful. Did you report it?

I have reported it and other obvious scams at other points. They have never taken any notice or sent a response. That's why all my crowdfunding from a while back is only done via PayPal. Kickstarter won't get another dime from me.

Been checking this daily since it went up, and sad to see it is still going...

If this stays up until the end (and I think it will as KS wont listen to any of us), I have a funny feeling a random suspicious $1000 (or a few $200) donations will be made come the end so the creator can nab that $4000 already pledged.

They are still sites promoting it BTW...

Wow. I can't believe news sites are running this. I think the worst part is that they are actually close to their goal and still have a week left.
