PS4's next software update, Masamune, will be available on 10/28

1) The PS4 has a OpenGL desktop, a browser is loaded at all times so Netflix will act like a browser app and only keep a bookmark on the PS4.
2) Netflix will use the HTML5 <video> with media extensions so streaming a movie will use the already loaded player and Playready.
3) A few K and a temporary cache for the artwork.

A console only has fixed hardware so suspend/resume should be very easy...that it hasn't been implemented has implications and my explanation is the most likely.

Oh, why is Netflix currently just slightly under 1GB in size?

Okay let's go through this one by one.

1) The PS4 has a OpenGL desktop, a browser is loaded at all times so Netflix will act like a browser app and only keep a bookmark on the PS4.

PS4 has an OpenGL desktop? What does that mean? Why would Sony use OpenGL for their UI and not their own libgnm? What's your source on that?

Netflix will act like a browser app and keep a bookmark on the PS4? Huh? So Sony's going to ditch the Netflix app and use a browser based Netflix? Again, where's your source on this?

2) Netflix will use the HTML5 <video> with media extensions so streaming a movie will use the already loaded player and Playready.

Again, where's your source on this? You're again saying Sony will ditch the current Netflix app for an HTML5 based web implementation. What advantages would this have and why?

3) A few K and a temporary cache for the artwork.

Ugh. I guess this goes back to your "Sony is going to ditch the Netflix app for a web-based HTML5 implementation for god knows what reason".

A console only has fixed hardware so suspend/resume should be very easy...that it hasn't been implemented has implications and my explanation is the most likely.

So your argument is "Well, it should be easy and since it hasn't been done, my explanation is the most likely one". That's a very sound, well-reasoned argument there.

Oh, why is Netflix currently just slightly under 1GB in size?

Huh? What are you trying to convey?

Looking forward to this update, I never liked that blue background, Does this update also give option to modify the themes? or is just the background?

As I understand it, you can either apply pre-made themes or change the stock theme's(the one it currently has) background color.
Doubtful you can modify themes. But just changing it to something else(hopefully free) will be glorious!

One of the things you experience when growing up is realizing that the world doesn't evolve around you. It's not a pleasant experience but a very enlightening one.

Apparently all of us asking for the ability to pause downloads are children. Thanks.

Shareplay sounds amazing but how smooth will it be?

720/30 on most connections probably.

Some people will need to set their expectations in-line, it really is just remote play. But for the purpose it has to be used for it's an awesome feature (trying something/couch co-op for unsupported games/getting help).

Just a question Why is pausing a download such a big deal? When I start a download if it's not finished when I'm done playing, I just put the console on stand by to finish. Is it a problem with people with bad Internet? I understand if it's the ps3 you couldn't start a download, then go to stand by to finish. Also playing games made download in the background really slow on ps3. Background downloading speed are really fast on ps4.

Some people have data caps on their Internet.

The problem is when I iniate a large download like say a game. And then I start downloading something smaller. I want to prioritze the smaller thing whether it's a game or a patch, but the only way to do this would be to cancel the large download. I also don't like the fact that it downloads everything in the list concurrently but that wouldn't be an issue either if they let us pause something. Yes, background downloading is way better on the current gen.

My issues with organization was the same thing that many people have brought up. We forsaw the issue once we realized that the system was gonna keep adding to the row without any way to sort or organize.

It is good news to hear that the video capture was fixed in 1.75. The only game I ever try and get video from is BF4 which is why I just assumed the feature was still broken. It's not like Sony mentioned that they fixed that feature in the patch notes and even before 1.75 you had people in threads acting like the feature worked as designed.

But since you can't run the patch until the game downloads, it really doesn't matter that the bandwidth is being split between them

Some people have data caps on their Internet.

This is the only real reason it needs to be implemented.

You'll have to explain it to me. The stuff I brought up have been issues from the start. Not only for people on gaf. Look at the comments for every firmware released since the launch of this system.
You deliberately took what someone said to you out of context so you could try getting a cheap, snarky shot in.

It could be a patch for an entirely different game though.

from what I can tell BF4 is still fucked when it comes to recording clips but other games in my collection like Destiny, TLOU, and Diablo have all worked fine.

if you remember back near launch BF4 wouldn't record in-game audio when recording a later (BF4) update fixed that issue. seems like the games might be at fault.

Its been a long time since I played Bf4. Every other game I've tried to capture since 1.75 has worked flawlessly.

Media playback is pretty awesome. For games like Destiny, it's almost necessary when you're doing the same Strike for the 30th time.

You have no supporting sources on any of this functionality you keep spouting all over the internet. You're spouting similar information over at the semiaccurate.com forum. He goes on about how this magical Xtensa DPU in the PS4 can do everything media wise you've all been dreaming about. It's almost as bad as those Xbox One fanboys that believed there was a second secret component in the Xbox One SoC.

Guys, please don't get excited about what jeff_rigby's posts. If what he says doesn't come to fruition, he should be considered for a ban.

I don't have a PS4 so I'm not sure how downloading on PS4 works. If you lose internet or shut down the PS4 before a download is done do you have to start over? I was under the impression that if your connection dropped, you could still resume from where you started.

Unless I already have the game installed via disc and simply want to download the smaller patch instead of waiting for the bigger download (like say I game) to finish. It's not complicated. Prioritizing downloads is base functionality that should be there.

I live with it fine but it doesn't mean I don't want to see it improved either.

It does. It picks up where it left off.

Yes, you can resume where the download left off.

Pretty much. As far as I can tell it was a bug in the SDK so any games released before they fixed it need to be patched. Which probably isn't a priority for most devs.

I once shut my ps4 down while it was still downloading, when I turned it on it continued the download. I didn't have to restart the download. Also when you start a download if you put it on standby, it will continue the download while the console is off. That's why pausing downloads are a non issue for me.

If they already have that set up, then they've already done the hard part. It should be like 5 minutes of work then. Baffling that they haven't just added it. :/

I think he means to say that the large download hogging his bandwidth is not the patch. If a bunch of stuff decides to auto-download and you want to launch one game that has a patch that needs to download, too bad. You have to wait extra long if the console decides to prioritize some other thing you don't want to play right away.

It's really a very simple feature whose absence makes downloading multiple things so much more painful than it should be. I have no clue why they're taking this long to fix it. I really hope it shows up as a hidden feature on Masamune.

It's such a simple feature - It's crazy it's not in yet.

Never really thought of it this way, so I can understand the want for it. Who knows, maybe that'll be a secret feature in 2.0. They did say there was more, after all

I'd like to be able to drop a folder of images onto the PS4 and have it transition between them for the background at set intervals. But no access to PS4 storage rules that out :/

So EA never patched BF4?

wow dude you don't even know anything about the PS4's API yet you are trying to go at it with jeff_rigby?

good luck with that. Hell a quick google search would of led you to a dozen articles about how the PS4 runs off FreeBSD-esque OS. OpenGL is just a natural API extension for the OS layer. Makes perfect sense. There are a billion sources out there yet you comically ignore those. So even at the very basic level you have no idea what you are talking about.

So again good luck on this jeff_rigby manhunt ;)

I'll give you an example that happened to me.

I turned my ps4 on after about a week. There were 3 patches downloading. One of them was bf4 and the bandwidth was being split amongst all 3 games. To make it go faster, my only option was to cancel the other 2 patches and lose all the progress I made on them.

If you leave your PS4 in standby that should never happen. I haven't ever needed to DL a patch on my PS4 while it's turned on, except for day 1 patches when I launch a game the first time.
