Why do people want Mother 4

Is the logic that they should make it without Itoi or that Itoi should be dragged to do something he doesn't want to do

Why do people want any game? lol.

Mother 2 was the SOLE GAME to get me from absolutey hating JRPG's to basically having that genre be one of the few types of genres of games I still play. :p

I should add that I loved Mother and Mother 3 just as much... all amazing and emotional in their own rights. Truly an unforgettable franchise and one that should still live on today.

I think the better question is how many people finished Mother 3 and if they did where do you think the series will go from there? Mother 3 ended in the best way the Mother series can.

I'm not down on Mother 4 without Itoi on board, and since Itoi has no interest as of this time so it's kind of impossible to happen.

What I would really love to happen is for the 3D Mother game to finally become a reality. Mother 3 HD remake for the Wii U would be the best thing to happen in the franchise.

For reference, in 2013 Nintendo ran two general Direct presentations, one on 13 November, the other on 18 December.

November 2013 mainly consisted of the final push for releases coming that month: new trailers for Super Mario 3D World (including a spoiler for the unlockable
Rosalina
), A Link Between Worlds, and Mario Party: Island Tour. There wasn't much else apart from information on upcoming system updates (NNID integration and Miiverse 3DS), a preview and December release date for the last wave of Pikmin DLC, and February release dates for Bravely Default (NA) and Professor Layton.

The equivalents this year are the last character trailer for Smash and a final push for Pokémon OR/AS, both retail compilations of NES Remix, and Captain Toad. Also note that Mario Kart and Hyrule Warriors DLC, while separately advertised, have not been shown off in a general Direct: we can expect details and release dates. And then there is Amiibo, of course.

Notice the lack of big announcements of full-priced retail games we didn't know existed.

December 2013 revealed several unannounced titles for the first time: Hyrule Warriors, NES Remix, Dr Luigi, and Chibi Robo: Photo Finder. The last three were all available within a month. Wii Sports Club: Golf and the Sonic Lost World Yoshi DLC were also made available immediately. As for early 2014 releases, a demo for Bravely Default was confirmed for January, Yoshi's New Island received a Spring release window (but no date), and more details were provided about the minigames in Kirby: Triple Deluxe. A March release date was given for Professor Layton vs Phoenix Wright. Other than the newly announced Hyrule Warriors and a character trailer for Smash, the game furthest from release that was shown was Mario Kart 8. No release dates were given past March.

As Nintendo has moved towards fewer, denser Direct presentations over the course of this year, and as Smash already received its own half-hour session last week, it looks as though most of us in this thread are assuming that tomorrow's Direct will serve the same purpose as both November and December 2013's combined. If that assumption is correct, we can expect specific release dates up to February or March, including possible demos, eShop/VC games, Amiibo patches, or DLC available as early as December or January. (As I said before in this thread, a highly likely candidate for a downloadable game available on short notice is Mario vs. Donkey Kong, which is tentatively dated for 2015. Also note that between NES Remix 1 and 2, Dr Luigi, and Pushmo World, there is a strong precedent for unannounced downloadable games to show up on less than a month's notice.) In the best case, a game with an indefinite release window (read: Xenoblade X) could be narrowed down to the first half of next year.

That is, however, quite a lot of material to cover. Remember that both the November and December Directs last year were half an hour in length. So it's possible that tomorrow's Direct won't cover nearly as much as we expect, and we will get another one sooner than we think.

So tomorrow I expect:
- One last character trailer for Smash
- One last push for OR/AS and Captain Toad, with possible demos (given that an OR/AS demo already exists in limited release)
- A push for the first two waves of Amiibo and details about integration with games that are not Smash
- Dates and details for upcoming Mario Kart and Hyrule Warriors DLC
- A reminder about Ultimate NES Remix and NES Remix Pack
- A reminder about holiday Wii U bundles (e.g. the 3DW + Nintendo Land bundle in NA)
- Upcoming Virtual Console releases, likely including DKC for NA
- At least one unannounced eShop surprise available between now and January
- February/March release date for one or both of Yoshi's Woolly World and Mario Maker
- February/March release date for Monster Hunter 4
- New features (e.g. local multiplayer or single-player) detailed for Splatoon, with no specific release date
- Xenoblade X confirmed for the first half of 2015, with no specific date (it would surprise me, but the Soraya Saga RT instills confidence)

The list above could easily fill half an hour.

Outside bets (pick one or two):
- Full release plan for Art Academy Wii U, including pricing for people with the existing sketchpad software
- Yokai Watch localization officially announced
- Code Name: STEAM confirmed for the first half of 2015 (or the first-party 3DS calendar will look very blank)
- Kirby and the Rainbow Curse confirmed for the first half of 2015
- January release date for Mario vs. Donkey Kong
- One unannounced full-priced retail game (for either system) with no release date in sight
- Fatal Frame localization confirmed
- N64 Virtual Console announced, with an initial offering of no more than three titles and a pricing/upgrade plan

Not happening:
- Any mention of the New 3DS or the Xenoblade port in NA/EU
- Information about SSB4 DLC
- Any acknowledgement of SMTxFE
- Any acknowledgement of Watch Dogs (really, why bother)
- Star Fox trailer (Zelda is an extreme long shot, but I really do not expect Star Fox)

If the Direct tomorrow is on the slimmer side, expect another one in December, as was the case in both 2012 and 2013. There is more than enough material for two shows, and that's just the stuff we know about.

Thanks for writing all this! Youre definitely onto some things here. Really excited for whatever tomorrow holds.

The logic is that if Mother 4 ever was made, it would mean Itoi would be fully on board again, and by extension, it would probably be an amazing game.

The reason it's probably the #1 least likely thing for Nintendo to ever do is because that will never happen.

Honestly, I would be happy for ANYTHING Mother related. New or old... I do not care. It wouldn't really be the same without Itoi there so I do agree on that one. Maybe one day he'll change his mind or that Nintendo can persuade him. :p

I think the better question is how many people finished Mother 3 and if they did where do you think the series will go from there? Mother 3 ended in the best way the Mother series can.

I think if Itoi wanted to do another Mother, he could do whatever he wanted to make it work.

The real Mother 3 was much different to what was hinted at the end of Earthbound (same motives so to speak but without involving Ness) and even the final version of Mother 3 was quite different to what he had planned initially.

I'd love to see Itoi do another game, period. It doesn't need to be a new Mother, it could be anything.
Hell, Sci-Fi Steampunk Horror Cooking Simulator written by Shigesato Itoi, let's freakin' DO this!
Day 0.

I'm still surprised Mother 3 hasn't been released in the West yet. Was that gag in the E3 2014 presentation worth nothing?

By the way, two other things we should keep in mind if tomorrow's presentation is being positioned as the last Direct of the year: this would be the time for us to hear about any successor or extension to the Wii U Digital Deluxe Promotion and Animal Crossing Plaza, both of which are scheduled to go away at the end of 2014.

Mother 3 ended the series on a perfect note. I really don't think an official 4th game is necessary, especially if it should be made without Itoi's involvement. And Mother is my favorite series of games, ever! I'm just hoping for a western release of Mother 1 and 3 someday.

The Mother 4 fangame looks incredible, though. I'm really quite excited to see how that turns out.

Video games don't really have series that have ended for reasons beyond lack of interest/inability to make money, so it might be unusual to people that Mother is done. That said, I would love to see Itoi team up with Nintendo to release a new game that handles different themes than Mother.

This is for until Spring 2015, so I don't know why people expect Zelda news when it's clearly Holiday 2015.

Actually, it will do Nintendo a world of good to show off something that'll be available well after the holiday period.

Yet to fully play and digest it, but I meant to say there's no reason for the series to continue. I'd be content with the series being fully localized, but I don't see it happening.

The music is still turning me off on this. :/

There no reason to continue any game series besides money, so I dont understand that reasoning.

Why do people want sequels in the first place? It's a good series with a passionate fanbase that's gained a lot of traction overseas in the past decade. Once you get down to it, I doubt most sensible people would want Itoi to be dragged out of retirement for a new entry and Nintendo could easily make it without him.

People are still going to want Metal Gear games once Kojima (eventually) retires, don't see why that isn't the case here.

Why is Itoi so dead set against being on board for one more?

I guess this is probably off base but it seems kinda arbitrary. If I were him I wouldn't rule it out entirely. I get that he won't want to do it until he feels inspired but there's zero sense in saying "nope never doing another one sorry."

Itoi is Mother. There's just no two ways about that.

The series ended with 3, I think most people can understand that.

Mother 4 won't be more of them unless Itoi is onboard. Period.

Why not just let a good thing end well? This is basically one of the few gaming franchises to actually end on a high note.

1.If there more of them I would love Itoi to be apart of them but Im not oppose to having some else working on them as long as they have the spirit of mother.
2.Because I want more earthbound games.

Mother 4? Thanks but no thanks unless Itoi is back and motivated.

Mother 1? Mother 3? All three in a packaged release? Yes please.

Well, the biggest reason why Nintendo can't really make another Mother game without Itoi is because the biggest selling point of that franchise is Itoi. Itoi working on the franchise is the reason why it got popular.

Not really in the mood to argue with that logic, so I'll leave it just by saying the series already hit a thematic/quality high-note with Mother 3 and I'm not sure how I'd feel without Itoi at the helm.

Granted, the fan-game does look like a fun experiment, but I find the lack of context and its jarring score rather off-putting.

The Mother trilogy needs to be re-released before any talk of a sequel. Mother 3 ended the series perfectly anyway.

Pretty much how I feel, really.

Why is Itoi so dead set against being on board for one more?

Read this.

I still can't get over how it sounds like Iwata never played Mother 3. :(

Because, when we are truly being honest with ourselves, many people would prefer something be run into the ground than end on a perfect note. It's a damn shame that so many people are screaming for Nintendo to exploit Itoi's master game series just for a false sense of hype.

I really want to see more VC support. The Wii U gas been disappointing in that regard so far.
Crossing my fingers one more time for N64 and DS Wii U Virtual Console (won't be setting my hopes for GCN etc. - firstly let Ninty make what they actually promised). If they will be available "right after this presentation", it would be god-like.

It's one of the main reasons why the series got popular. But a new Mother game nowadays would definitely sell on name alone, regardless if Itoi was involved or not.
Mother as a series is the strange and sincere way that itoi writes and the strange world that comes from that.
A mother game without the tones itoi hit would not be a mother game.

I feel like if Nintendo were to putmout a Mother 4 without Itoi working on it we wouldn't get anything like the existential Magicant. Or (Mother 3 spoilers)
killing off the main character's mother ten minutes into the fucking game
. The battle system would be there, there would be interesting new mechanics on top of that. The characters would likely be charming enough, but I just feel like something would be missing.
Maybe I'm talking outmofmmy ass, and I would absolutely love to be proven wrong by nintendo, but as far as I'm concerned, mother is itoi.

OT: the fact that iwata is back in good health and ready to drop the bombs once more has me hype as fuck. My body has never been more ready.

No, it would not.

Mother, from its very inception, was first and foremost an Itoi product. Nintendo's involvement in the series was always secondary to this fact. Nintendo making a Mother 4 without Itoi is basically like continuing Calvin and Hobbes without Bill Watterson. It's going to be a hard sell, regardless of whether or not the actual product turns out well.

How is having one more game = ruining things into the ground?

Because you're asking for another game without regard to the most important factor that defined the series. How is that not a recipe for running things to the ground?

When they are being demanded to make more when a series is done. Both Itoi and Iwata have stated that the Mother series is over. Itoi says he isn't interested in making video games anymore and Iwata has stated that he doesn't want to greenlight Mother games without Itoi's involvement. They both have stated that they would prefer others to make Mother-like games than actually make a fourth Mother game.

Besides, you have played Mother 3 right? Where would they go after that ending?

Keeping it very realistic so no disappointment
