iOS Gaming November 2014: GLORIOUS!™

You could be right! I tried playing it again last night in bed while my GF was sleeping and felt pretty indiscreet spinning the ipad mini!

I looked up the solution for the first puzzle of Device 6 and I'm not sure I want to continue. Is this pretty typical of the type of puzzle?

I remember that Device 6 was the reason I bought a pair of BT headphones.

With the corded headphones I risked death by strangling several times.

While I played Year Walk on iPad, I prefer Device 6 and Sailor's Dream on iPhone.

BTW...Sailor's Dream is fantastic imho...a nice blend between last puzzle in Year Walk and Device 6. Still struggling for the final puzzle tough.

The first DLC for Monument Valley is called "Forgotten Shores" and it's out next week (as an iAP) for 1.99$. It adds 8 levels that take place between the penultimate and the final chapter of the game.

Here's the trailer for it:

I loved the game, but don't be put off by some of the puzzles...it can be tough to progress at some points.

Do yourself a favor and download the companion app once you've played a bit. Gives some interesting context.

Spoiler alert:
you need the companion app to see the real ending in Year Walk

Well, to be fair, I like to think that in the end, many years into the future, when Apple doesn't exist anymore, IAP will be their legacy instead of being remembered as a leading technology corporation, IAP is what they will be remembered for. History will tell it like this: "And then a company called Apple invented InAppPurchases, ruining gaming and many other forms of entertainment because they targeted a human weakness, otherwise known as people with inner demons, to a horrible payment system that basically...(you know the rest)" xD So their legacy is pretty much f*** up for the future generations xD Good job xD

IAP basically started with Microsoft.

Toucharcade reviewed Asdivine Hearts (latest Kemco RPG) and gave it 4.5/5. Yes it's TA, but the reviewer was Shaun Musgrave which is the only one who can actually write about games there. The review pretty much echoes my thoughts on the game. Very solid JRPG and the only one published by Kemco I enjoyed.

If you have any interest in the genre, give it a look while it's on sale.

Well, friends, it was bound to happen sooner or later. A couple of the developers of Kemco's regular RPG releases have been dancing at the knife edge of quality for a while now, and it was only a matter of time before one of them finally lined up all the pieces and created something truly excellent. I always knew it would be you, EXE Create. Asdivine Hearts [$3.99] isn't just Kemco's best RPG release to date, it's one of the better original JRPGs available on mobiles from anyone. It doesn't transcend the genre in any meaningful ways, but every aspect of it not only shows a desire to change things up a bit, but to make sure all of those ideas actually work well together. If you like JRPGs and want something that isn't a port of a classic, this game should definitely be on your short list.

Same for the PSN thread, I don't like it. Just because nobody is really making OT's or announcement threads about IOS games.

That's definitely a problem that needs to be fixed (whether or not fixing it actually entails keeping the threads in Community is a whole other thing), not by dropping news in here though. People should be making OTs and news threads about iOS announcements that interest them, instead of relying on this thread for all that stuff (and new threads are indeed made, sometimes). It almost asks the question would simply not having any threads about platforms be healthier (I don't think so personally, but who knows)? Then all discussion would be forced to be in new threads, where it should be for the most part.

There have been times when I have considered making threads like that, but usually hesitate because well, you know, IOS and GAF doesn't always mix well. A thread for, what, 5, 10 replies, or the inevitable "IOS games aren't real games" response? Not really worth it, at least IMO

Yep. I think most of us don't feel like making separate iOS gaming threads because most of them are either hit with indifference (which makes the thread disappear fast) or vitriol because mobile gaming. At least making a post here means those who are legitimately interested will be able to get informed even if it's hours later.

How is this on an iPhone? Because even though Baldur's Gate went Universal, it's really not optimized for a small screen IMO

I can't say for sure but playing on Android, I'd Have to guess that some of the menu buttons particularly on the left side have to be awfully small on the iPhone.

On a tablet, probably my one gripe with the game is going through doors. They should have made it so that if you see the door icon and click on it way before your characters get there, they should just go in. But instead they all pile up around it and it can be a pain to get them to through it (accidentally selecting a character, for instead.

If Pitta gets it, hopefully he can shed some light having both an iPad and iPhone to compare.

EDIT: They must have fixed the door thing. It now works exactly like I felt it should ;)

Well I've noticed that, in my observations, gaf seems to lean more android than than iOS for mobile. Games that are released for iOS and android seem to get more replies than games that are exclusive to iOS.

I'm not so sure about that. I have both and, at least the main Android gaming thread, is a barren wasteland compared to these threads.

One of the small regrets I have from switching from iPhone after 7 years to Note 4. iOS gets games sooner or some never make it to Google Play Store.

Well iOSGAF definitely is more kept up and supported then the general android gaming thread but looking at other threads says something different. The Japanese strategy game fans in the P&D and TB seem to mostly be made up android owners, the clash of clans thread was resurrected by some android gamers, and every thread about an iOS game seems to be filled with posts about when the android version is coming out.

In off topic, the iPhone threads are definitely the biggest device threads but the android tablet and phone threads seem to be in second place as far as replies and views goes.

At the end of the day, I just sub to the thread and people interested in ios can do the same. While it is nice to "spread the word" it isn't really our job is it? The games will still come out and we'll still know.

Thanks to all the people who work on this thread and continue to dig up little gems.

Thanks for pointing that one out! Think I remember seeing something about that game a while ago (probably from you) but completely forgot about it and didn't know it was on Android.

Have to check it out.

Anyway, from time to time I may mention something about Android in these threads being a dual owner (like about Icewind Dale, knowing it would be out on iOS). And my desire to have Banner Saga on Android (already owning the iOS version).

But I try not to derail the threads on Android specific things. Believe me I have my own pain points when it comes to iOS games not coming to Android, but am lucky to have both (still lack iPad game options sadly).

EDIT: You know it's been a long week when you don't even remember that you already HAD tried a game. Cyberflow is cool but it's controls are very difficult to get used to.

That's part of the problem, mobile games are not considered "real games" by a vocal group of GAF members. By moving this topic into community it's just enforcing that notion that it's just this odd little thing that's not really gaming.

I say this as a traditional console gamer not an iOS Zelot and by moving this topic into community it's not going to help the perception of mobile gaming.

I picked up an iPad Mini 2 today, 32GB. $211.42 after a little bit of hustling.

Since I've had an iPhone for years, I'm not new to iOS gaming, but I have put it off for the last two years because I knew I was eventually getting one of these.

First order of business: Final Fantasy Dimensions.

And I'll probably go crazy with Carcassonne and Neuroshima Hex.

Of course, Slayin' is still the best number one make you humble iOS game ever, now on a bigger screen.

I personally think it's BS. I've been a hardcore gamer for years with many consoles going all the way back to Colecovision.

And today? I spend more time mobile gaming than I do on my Xbox One. Now that's partly because it's easier to get in a quick game and there.

But there are some absolutely brilliant games and ones that are so incredibly difficult that they harken back to the old days of gaming. There's games that force you to really think. And then there's even PC ports of hardcore games.

I despise people that still think mobile gaming is all casual Angry Birds and Candy Crush crap. Those games may make the most money. But there's a ton of quality games that are far from casual. And I love it!

And that's not to mention that there's some amazing touch based game "experiences" that you couldn't reproduce even on a console or PC.

I have a big stack of Starbucks cards for JoyJoy.

First three replies will get a code, I'll post more later.

Also, if anybody can help me out a little, my good friend also just got an iPad and I foolishly threw away the Starbucks cards I had been sitting on a few weeks ago. If anybody has any older (but still valid) codes, I want to help my friend load up on freebies. I still have cards for JoyJoy (duh), Perfect Paths and Next Numbers for him.

It's been awhile now but I remember the iOS release threads coming to pass, in part, because people were complaining about numerous individual mobile release threads cluttering up the board.

I don't know, maybe my memory is hazy.

I think I just fully completed Sailor's Dream.

It was amazing...I'll think about it for days.

Simogo are the true masters of storytelling.

Few GAMES had me involved so much like this one.

Those threads would fall of the first page faster than someone could post some shitty meme for first lolz.

Welp. I'm going to get hopefully) the new Air 2 today at Best Buy. They're having a special deal currently where you get a $50 when you come in between 1 and 4 on the 8th. Also overlaps with the last day on their deal of a guaranteed $200 of an iPad 2 or above on trade-in, so I'm taking my iPad 3, iPad mini, and iPhone 4S in to trade in. I had been saving my 4S as a media hub of sorts for around the house but no need to hold on to it if it can get me another $100 towards an Air 2.

I don't agree. Aside from the mobile vitriol GAF garners (and in some cases promotes), I don't want to search for new iOS releases in their own individual threads. It's much easier to find it in a single thread compendium. Bad move IMO and I hope the Mod Staff reverses its decision before the monthly threads become a wasteland.

Is there an app for PC that will manage "documents" folders between devices with some sort of automation?

I am moving most of my gaming over to the iPad, but there might be a few games I want to keep on both devices and constantly copying the data back and forth might be irritating.

My goodness..... This is really really damn good. I'm still in the middle of a round, but I'll come back with imps and tutorial pics if you guys are interested.

Really though, it's one buck. Everyone should pic this up.

Please do. Definitely interested in hearing why it's so good

Agreed, I do hope that mentality changes. I'd love to see OT's for games like Skullduggery or Wayward Souls.

Okay, not gonna completely tutorialize this since the video above has the tutorial, but here I go:

So, you have a 4x4 tile board, surrounded by more tiles (making it 6x6 because of the corners, but more on those later).

So you start with an empty board, but then there's monster's heads in all the tiles surrounding the board (except the corners). You tap a head to shift it from outside in. This is the only way to move heads, so it creates an interesting dynamic as you have to be concious of how each push will affect the board. So, if I have a head in a middle tile of the board, I would have to push in one head, then another to push that head in the middle of the board. (More easily seen than explained).

A match is made when there are 3 or 4 of the same heads in a row, in much they disappear in a poof. It's important to be vigilant about where the pieces are, as the heads on the outside can not contribute to matches unless they are pushed into play (this has lead to silly mistakes in which I push a row containing two of a type of head all the way across to a third head, but then that head is actually on the outside, which creates a horizontal jam in that row:
C4Pnxdu.png

As you can see in that picture of the jam, there's an altar on top that shows a head and an empty bar. The head on the altar type thing is the next head that will appear when you push another head in (so it will fill that out outside tile spot).

The bar on the bottom is a sort of bonus bar. As you make matches, it starts to fill up. When it gets full, you're greeted with a card that has 12 X's on it, telling you to pick 3. You tap 3 of them, and each gives you a special power. I believe there's only 4, each which belongs to its own predetermined corner (this is where they come into play). They include a wildcard head (that can be matched with any head), a neutral head that turns into a random head, a skull that makes a head disappear, or a pot that destroys a head like the skull, but also fills its spot with a pot. It can then be tapped to be broken.

Each of these are used by dragging them from their corner into play. All except for the skull have a chance to appear in the outside tiles as well during regular play.

On top of that, there are two "character sets" of 12 heads each. This creates a sort of Threes dynamic in which you try to unlock all the heads, similar to how you try to unlock all of Threes' cards. The longer your game goes, the more types of heads are added in. As of now I don't think there's anyway to know when the next head will appear though.

You're also given a score for each run, and the scores aren't ridiculous lists of numbers (mine have been at max 4 digits so far) which is nice for high score sharing.

So, basically what we have here is a wonderful buck game with moody, piano based music, unique art (its got a kind of Day of the Dead style, which is purposeful as the dev is mexican), and really original feeling core gameplay that is super addicting. Honestly I love this game, it just feels like a fantastic, pure experience, and it's super hard to put down.
