343: Halo 5 beta runs at 720p/60FPS, focused on gameplay, not final resolution

Between the missing 1080p mention at the reveal and their recent comments about framerate over resolution it is obvious this wouldn't be 1080p but 720p is pretty disappointing even for the beta. Makes me fear a 792p or something stupid final resolution

I generally don't have an issue w/ 900p

This is fine for a beta, especially this early and being gameplay and server-load centric.

Gane is still way off and there's plenty of time for optimization. It'll definitely make the prep for the beta way less stressful and they can make sure everything is tuned around 60fps.

Not an issue. Obviously for the final game, campaign at least, that would suck, but I actually think it's smart to not let people see the game in all its glory until it's out. Even if they could get it to 900p right now, I think 720p would be cool.

It is literally a year away from release. A year.

They could have said the beta was at 480i and I'd be fucking happy. Fuck the graphic whore bullshit in this case. Focusing on gameplay is music to my ear.

Here we go.

I'm ok with this as long as we get consistent 60fps

If they said it'd be 1080p or not is irrelevant. This is a beta for a game which is a year away. They didn't lie, because the game isn't out.

Nope. They only said 60fps, never mentioned 1080p first hand, maybe someone messed up a headline or took a little creative freedom with their extrapolation, but GAF was pretty quick to realize that 343 were very mum on pushing for 1080p, and that's just fine.
I knew this quote would come in handy for future laughs.

Iam no halo purist So I actually welcome sprint and stuff,

You cant tell from these vids but I have a feeling the lighting is going to be really good.

They have already confirmed the multiplayer to be 1080p 60fps, I wonder if they will go 1080p 30fps for the campaign ala killzone:sf. Personally I would prefer If they went 900p if it meant more next gen graphics and higher poly count like ryse did.

Ground Zeroes managed a perfect 1080p60 a year before MGSV ships, too.

Really glad to hear this. I've played enough good looking games to fill an ocean. I just want something fun with some new game ideas.

There's plenty of evidence of them claiming 1080p for this title with a simple search: http://www.examiner.com/article/hal...esolution-support-for-upcoming-xbox-one-games
The link you just posted has single publisher saying "yea, it could happen in the future" with no confirmation or tentative goal whatsoever. You also don't even have 343 parrotting that line. They just said they're taking advantage of the system to bring the best. So, as I said, you have sites like "The Examiner" stretching the truth to get a nice headline, when a publisher (not even a developer) saying that it "could" happen.

No one should even be mad. It's a beta.

The point is that 1080p 60fps should be locked in for a game like this. Visual clarity and a consistent frame rate are a must. They should remove effects until that is reached and then slowly add things back in and optimize from there.

720p as the baseline doesn't bode well, beta or not.

what new game ideas does this beta offer?

anyway, this game's a year away. it's good to see them prioritizing function over form.

I know people are talking about it being a beta and that not being a good way to judge final graphics etc, but what are some good examples of games making big graphical changes between beta's and final versions?

Most beta's these days are practically demo's barely a couple of months before launch, and I know that isn't the case with this game. Still, some beta vs final upgrade comparisons would be nice!

It would be nice if there was Beta for single player(I know that makes no sense, whatever) or some resemblance of an offline demo. I may be the only person who has interest in Halo purely for the single player and will never touch the multi.

Beta looks fine. Lots of aliasing due to 720p res though. You can't expect miracles from the One at 60fps due to bandwidth problems. Will probably ship at something around 900p or so--maybe 1328x1080 like Halo 2 in the MCC.

720p is fine for beta, gameplay focus is good.

I will be fine if 900p is final resolution for MP to keep locked 60fps, but I would honestly rather them max out the graphics and presentation for the campaign, even if it meant pulling it back to 30fps (for campaign). To me, 60fps is not that big of a deal in campaign.

just my opinion though.

Yes totally irrelevant and no lies whatsoever. we should ignore that the game was propped up as a 1080p game 8 months ago when it clearly can't hit it, at least in the visuals they want to show.

so? I'm not having some meltdown saying it's going to be 720p in a year and I'll never buy it. I'm just skeptical there will be a 50-100% increase between beta and final

because there rarely is

I expect 900p/60fps in the final game, and that is perfectly fine by me.
Good to hear they focus on gameplay and framerate before anything else.

not sure that is a good example. most betas come out a month or so before launch. this is a whole year out.

Destiny on XB1 and that was less than two months before release. 343 has an entire year to up the resolution.

Welcome to the age of lowered expectations. Seriously, Halo is MS flagship title. It should be setting the standard for everything else. I'm not a big Halo fan, but this has to be a little disappointing for people who are.

Example of a game with a playable beta a year or even 6 months before release?

Its a beta, so im okay with it being 720p for now.
For release i expect at least 900p but im a huge halo fan so will probably still buy if 720p
if beta is nice.
