Assassin’s Creed: Unity Framerate Is “Atrocious”

It's out in the US today? When are the reviews going live? Pretty shocking if it's consistently sub-30fps. It does look technically very impressive, but I'd rather those crowds were cut in half, the immersion dialled back a little and a smoother frame rate.

Most gamers won't even notice. This board showed that they can't even differenciate 30 and 60 fps (the Shadow of Mordor topic was hilarious), so Ubisoft will get a free pass. I just hope that all of us who are bothered wont buy it. Money is the best argument here.

Those sweeping generalizations, though....

That's not true of Watch Dogs. The last gen version looked dramatically worse and really nothing like the XO/PS4/PC version.

I might be mistaken here, but isn't Watch Dogs the same game across the two generations? It might not look good on 360, but the game itself is the same right?

But as with all cross-gen games they will all just be up-ports due to being designed around the last gen machines first. It might be a "best for current gen" situation, but if it's the same game it still is limited by what is possible on those systems.

But if Watch dogs is akin to Splinter Cell Double Agent and that being to distinctly different games then your point obviously stand.

I can't see 30 fps anyway, I'd rather have 15-20fps and next gen visuals.... !

!

Here is leaks from next gen. 1 frame per second, total immersion. You clearly have the time to appreciate each NPC now

Lol really? Anyone who isn't blind can spot the difference between 30-60fps as evidenced by the numerous threads asking that very question. Even those who can't notice 30/60 difference will damn well notice drops into the low 20's.

I wanted to dominate the living room. Then I took an ESRAM in the knee.
I played AC1 on my PS3 which also had atrocious 20fps drops and sub-par visuals. I really can't go back to that.

Yeah, these times should be over. AC1 on PS3 was a fucking joke with occasional single-digit frame rates. Fighting and running in crowds was utterly not enjoyable. I hope that Unity is not that bad, but all these reports are making me regret my pre order. I'd rather have simple graphics and conventional NPC crowds than consistently sub-30 frame rates.

“It’s not even close to a locked 30 fps, it feels like it’s running at 20 something most of the time ...”

Dat cinematic feel

Jokes and memes aside, while this series has never been a performance marvel and people seemed to be fine with it (I only own AC1/2/2 brohood),
if the gameplay and overall experience is solid I guess the only way to see improvements would be in Unity:Fraternity?
I guess PC with usermade fixes and mods will be the best way to play this, it's lame how the biggest franchises around are the less appealing
experiences with dayone patches (if they care at all) and stuff.

When can we expect Digital Foundry to provide some info on this? The game is out and there's not a single review yet...

Man and some people thought the X1 version was holding the PS4 version back lol.

"waits for the people saying they lowered the PS4 versions framerate to match the X1 for parity".

Who cares, at least it has parity.

I guess the we can't do women due to memory constraints excuse is somewhat vindicated though.

Last I've heard and saw (yesterday): Framerate around 20fps and heavy pop-in issues.

Video: https://account.xbox.com/sv-SE/game...ins&scid=03a80100-9ff3-46ea-be76-e00e7fe465df

Another video here:

Video quality is meh but you can see what's going in.
Pop-in issue is absolutely horrible!
Same goes for the crappy framerate.

Now you know why even the PS4 version is 900p.
The game runs like shit.
Horrible engine+optimization.

lol

You know, I'm starting to wonder if the, "locking the game at the same spec to avoid debates and stuff" was just a way to deflect attention away from the fact that the engine is in a complete fucking mess.

Lmao.

It's like someone said in the OT, what's the point of including so many NPCs in an attempt to make it super immersive, if the framerate is just going to hinder that immersion?

Sub 30fps is fucking horrible. I don't know how any company could be fine with releasing a game that runs under 30fps. Rare dips? Sure, understandable, I guess. But frequent drops into the twenties...and even LOWER? Unacceptable.

That's the keyword here. "Unacceptable". If you ask me, if the framerate of a game drops that far, it is broken. The game's simply broken. It is a faulty product that should not be sold. Vendors should stop selling it until the issues are fixed, and everyone who bought it should be eligible for a full refund during the warranty period.

According to Totalbiscuit the PC version is also complete ass. You won't get a good experience with this game on any platform, unless the day 1 PC version patch is a miracle.

The problem that I had yesterday was just the MASS of bugs. Guards spawning in from the sky, NPC actors wandering through terrain and clipping through objects, scripted sequences breaking at random and stealth seems like it's just busted.

lmao

Those NPC characters must be the main issue. I mean, huge crowds look really nice and realistic but they are not an essential part of the game, I believe they are just there wasting memory that can be used to enhance other important parts of the game instead like the framerate in this case. But you know, Ubi gonna Ubi.

And to think people were complaining about this not being 1080p on PS4 lol, somehow I doubt those same people still want 1080p now unless they like playing at like 5fps.

Anyways, bit of a mess really. Should have just dropped the amount of NPC's on the screen to get a stable frame rate or lowered the resolution a bit. It's supposed to be gen, devs need to start making a locked frame rate the #1 priority, especially if it's going to be 30fps to begin with.

Here’s Unity‘s World Level Design Director, Nicolas Guerin:

“At Ubisoft for a long time we wanted to push 60 fps. I don’t think it was a good idea because you don’t gain that much from 60 fps and it doesn’t look like the real thing. It’s a bit like The Hobbit movie, it looked really weird.

“And in other games it’s the same – like the Rachet and Clank series [where it was dropped]. So I think collectively in the video game industry we’re dropping that standard because it’s hard to achieve, it’s twice as hard as 30fps, and its not really that great in terms of rendering quality of the picture and the image.”

The game’s creative director, Alex Amancio also chimed in that 30 fps “feels more cinematic” and that “it actually feels better for people when it’s at 30 fps.”

Those sweeping generalizations, though....

Tell that to those guys who blindly bought the supposed 60 fps PS4 edition of Mordor because members on this board said it was 60 fps. Or to all the guys here who failed the 30 vs. 60fps test a couple of weeks ago. There is truth in everything, sadly.
