Phil Spencer Played A New Game From Rare Today

.

Recently, however, Chris Sutherland (voice actor, Killer Instinct announcer) was laid off. (though he still does voicework for Killer Instinct.)

Well that's something at least. I still feel that it has lost its soul though, especially with the Stamper brothers going "Nope" and leaving the industry completely. I wish them the best however, I really do, but I don't think Microsoft will ever give them the freedom they need to make great games.

Everything fits with the Battletoads trademark news from yesterday.

What are the odds...

Yes, MS is quickly exausting every IP that Rare made under Nintendo that matches their target audience, and besides KI it's not doing a very good job....

Cobra Triangle 2.

Seriously though... I hope they have moved away from kinect. Should be interesting to see what they've been working on.

Hopefully they'll have gameplay footage or a trailer ready by E3 2015.

I felt that too (I'm actually only optimistic because of the information.) , but then I considered this is a Microsoft who is willingly funding a reboot of arguably one of the worst selling games of the PS2/XB/GCN era.

And /that/ is what excites me, a lot.

What other Rare IPs are they exhausting for the Xbox One????

Steve Mayles left a few months ago. He was the guy who designed characters like King K. Rool, Dixie Kong, and Banjo.

That's no good. :(

At the very least if that list of vets still at Rare is accurate, they still have the lead Concept Artist there.

Battletoads for XBLA @ $20

New open-world Banjo @ Retail $60

Those would satisfy a lot of fans if they can get 8+ metacritic averages.

I guess he could always come back if they needed him. Kevin Bayliss, who designed DKC Donkey Kong and Diddy, is doing classic costumes for Killer Instinct.

Well Bayliss is freelance/doesn't make games anymore. He produces music iirc.

Guessing either Battletoads which is most probable because of the recent trademark registration or Banjo Threeie because MS is aware of the fan demand for the title. Also Phil Spencer's comment really glows with how differently he and Microsoft are approaching the future of the Xbox One now. "As it should be" is very telling of their current ethos.

As for Rare I agree their glory days are over but they're still more than capable of making fantastic games. Whatever they're working on could be decent.

Personally I'd love a new Conker in the vein of Live and Reloaded.

I don't know why anyone pretends that Rare is still Rare, like the name means anything.

"Rare building a uniquely Rare game." Yeah, a completely different team from the one that used to build Rare games.

It's like saying "Atari building a uniquely Atari game."

What does "a uniquely Rare game" mean? Does that even make sense as a thing to say? For the last six years the studio's only done Kinect stuff. Are any of the people who worked on Viva Pinata and Nuts & Bolts still there even?

Oh well, hope the game these people are working on will be good, I guess.

edit
Cool.

Or "Naughty Dog building a uniquely Naughty Dog game".

Please don't understand this as me saying that Rare is equal to ND. My point is that a studio isn't necessarily bad just because the old guard has left the building.

Now if you doubt Rare's next game because of Kinect Sports Rivals, that's a perfectly valid concern.

Has Microsoft ever revealed anything at VGA/VGX?
Alan Wake's American Nightmare, I think?

They've usually shown trailers for already announced games (Gears, Halo, Quantum Break, Forza, Crackdown 2).

So jealous. All signs point to Banjo, but I'll be pleased with just about anything Rare makes that's not Kinect related.

Man, if only this were the late nineties. In this day and age does anyone care if "Rare" is making a game?

Yes ? All this Rare bashing is getting old. They haven't made a bad game in the last 10 years (or more), people are just complaining because they're not making the games they want them to make.

You guys are looking way too much into the 'uniquely Rare' mention.

Considering the rest of Rare's non-kinect games after the merger are pretty consistent in quality (other than Ghoulies!), I'm pretty confident.

Hell I wouldn't call the first Kinect Sports 'bad' by any sense. Rivals? Yes, that is a bad game. I played it, I think it's bad. Rare's no stranger to fumbles. (Jet Force Gemeni and Ghoulies.)

Why is nobody focusing on the important bit from that tweet? I think the fact that they have something in playable state is pretty good news.

I hope it is a kart racer. With the amount of IPs microsoft has they can come up with a good set of characters to use. Xbox currently doesn't have a racer like that so there is room for it. That or a BK game would be nice. They need to go after the younger audience.

Rare actually has a bunch of ex-Codemasters folks in Rare now. A racing game from them at this point would be sick.

Would actually like to see Banjo Karting return as a side project...
