iOS Gaming November 2014: GLORIOUS!™

In their round-up last week, PG said there's a "nice big juicy secret game" coming out this week and to get hyped.

Also mentioned the sci-fi game Space Age, releasing on the 13th.

Whoever has a really big surprise release has been doing a good job keeping it quiet. Of course, Bioshock took a lot of people by surprise too.

Wonder what this game is. Hopefully it's something good.

Any Icewind Dale impressions? How is the port? I'm itching to replay that one but at the moment I very very much do not have the time. :(

I've been playing on the 6+ and I really like it so far. There's a lot of text, so if you have an iPad that may be preferable, but it's perfectly playable on the 6+. Even has an option to resize the text.

Took me a little bit to get into the swing of things, there's a lot to learn, a lot of little buttons to know the functions of, but if you're an rpg veteran it should be no problem.

Looks like it's following the AD&D ruleset. Don't know if there's special rules for the Forgotten Realms universe?

Anyway, it's great so far. Took me awhile to get my party started (creating character(s), buying equipment, equipping it all) but have done some quests in and around town, combat, exploration, story, micro-management - it's all there =)

I'm playing on the 2nd to easiest setting and still getting killed at times. Multiple save slots, and a quick-save button are life savers. It's unforgiving and rewarding - I recommend it.

P.s. Can anyone tell me if camera movement is abysmally slow and awkward in xcom, or it's just some weird bug or quirk of playing it on the 6+?

To be fair, that game did get a very mixed response. I think I picked it up during a $1.99 sale only because I like hack n slashes. But it is pretty bland gameplay wise. And there was a lot of complaining about IAPs, but I was able to complete it without any.

It just didn't live up to the hype.

So, at least for those of us who buy support premium efforts, there are still reasons why I don't buy everything under the sun. I don't wait for price drops for the sake of price drops. I just sometimes pick up games I otherwise wouldn't have.

Wait it was 6.99 and still had IAP? lol

So I was gonna buy Banner Saga on iPad air 2 but it was just announced for PS4. Do you all feel like it's better suited for the big screen or touch screen?

I'm sure it'll be great on a big screen, but the touch screen adaptation is spot on, especially on an iPad. This was a port done right. Guess, it's just your preference of whether you want it on the go or not.

Banner Saga on iPad is GLORIOUS (TM)

According to last devs interview, the iPad version is the definitive one (I know nothing about the PS4 port, just announced, tough).

Personally I find these kind of games (well...almost ANY games but FPS) much more engaging and intimate on iPad (especially story based ones).
I'm not that sure that it will work that well with a pad during fights...but I always hated moving around squares with a pad, so maybe it's just me.

Anyway, be sure to get the game and play it on the platform of your choice, awesome game.

This looks promising! I love me some mini golf, be it zany golf or Stickman golf. The fact that it is by Nimblebit gives me pause, however, for their f2p habits.

I wonder whether this was inspired by desert golf.
F2P, no IAP, only video ads, according to TA
(If I remember correctly)

Replaying Monument Valley in anticipation of the expansion.

So good.
Doing the same. Up to "The Box". So good

Monster Dash also received an update and will get more (a la Age of Zombies) soon!

Those new levels of Monument Valley were bought so quickly :) Give me moar!

Space Age, an amazing looking point and click, is also supposed to drop tomorrow. GLORIOUS week!

Framed looks good, still have to see some videos about it. Thought that was going to be published by Chillingo but its better this way. And premium. Awesome.

The Monument Valley IAP is an insta-buy (although they said it was going to be free a long time ago, but with ustwo you can never fully trust them).

Golfinity looks good but is NimbleBit, a company that can't hook their players with good gameplay so they have to resort to slot machine tactics to keep their mind twisted freemium addicts. No thanks. No ethics = no support from me.

Hmm, I see. But how is the game? Oceanhorn is ok I guess, I wanted something else.

Then go for Ittle Dew like M_B says, closer than Oceanhorn to the original Zelda.

@Minsc Sorry but I can recall if I did those harder levels or not. I finished both in two days. But I did bought the dragon in the end to help with some things so I may have finished those with the dragon. Not sure. But next week I will be all over the next Kingdom Rush: Origins for sure.

Does anybody have any KRPG recommendations?

Hopefully iPad ready with achievements, and I don't mind the KRPG "staples," in fact I'm quite itching to hack and slash and loot mindlessly for a little bit.

I have all five Zenonia games installed, but it looks like the last entries are F2P, so I'm not sure about that.

When Ustwo said the levels would be free, that was speculation, before they even started working on the levels. Then after the time and effort they put into the new levels, they decided a paid expansion was the way to go

Golfinity has no IAP, only video ads

Ah ok, I never heard anything again about that so thanks. For the quality they offer on MV is a no brainer. Just that the last thing I heard that it was going to be free... my new gripe with ustwo is...

The other day I was browsing the store on an Android phone (yeah I know...) and found out that the Google version of Whale Trail is premium. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr I hate them why cannot the iOS version can be premium too.... booooo! Damn.

I like this move for the better. I will check it out to support this move.

I can't help but blame Apple and the rise of mobile F2P for this shit. Thanks Square Enix, for ruining a great franchise!

Leaked screenshots from the next Just Cause game (consoles/PC)

Just want to clear this up to prevent undue shitting on an awesome game (I've seen it demoed).

This game does not feature in-game micro transactions.

Christofer Sundberg said:
To be perfectly clear: Just Cause 3 will be available in 2015 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Windows PC. It will be distributed as a retail box and digital download. It is not a Free To Play game. It does not feature in-game micro transactions.

Does that mean we'll release the game and call it quits? Nope. Beyond launch, we are likely to look into DLC packs and items as part of our ambition to support Just Cause 3 and its players for many years to come, but until that time we’re completely focused on making the best Just Cause game we possibly can. Rest assured it will be a huge, fully packed and extremely rewarding experience right out of the gate.

Woah. That is a biggie. I still haven't played the first one yet, but may need to bump it up in my priority list.

Anyone know if it's important to play the first one prior to this? While an expansion, PG's article made it sound like it's kind of the same game with a lot of improvements -- new maps, weapons, etc. So wasn't sure if the storyline of Enemy Unknown was important.

Is Enemy Within worth it if you already played the original?

Was just reading some reviews of the console version and it sounds like it has the same content but the campaign expanded and improved, with new weapons, maps, etc.

So it almost sounds like a "definitive" edition of the game. And I was considering the first game since I got my iPad Mini so perfect timing!

I wonder if this release have something to do with the fact 2K didn't release the original on the BR AppStore (since the censorship on mature games has lifted recently).

Probably not, though, since Bioshock wasn't released either. Hopefully Enemy Within will be available tonight.

So how is xcom on iOS compared to PC? I have EW on steam but haven't touched it due to my massive backlog. Just wondering if there is any reason to play the iPad version compared to PC other than portability.

That depends. Do you prefer playing games on a PC or the iPad?

The game itself is technically superior on PC because of graphics and performance.

Replayed Monument Valley and just got a glimpse of the new levels.

All this GLORIOUSNESS (TM) made me feel like shit because I forgot to mention the game in my GOTY list; my bad.

I loved loved LOVED the PC version--over 100 hours--and I downloaded the iPad version on a trip because I wanted to see how it played.

My biggest gripe with the iOS version--and this is kind of ridiculous, I'll admit--was that you can't change the armor color for any of your soldiers. I had a color-coding system on the PC for the different classes, so you'd be able to quickly tell where your soldiers were at any given point. Without colors, It makes it a lot harder to tell the difference between people. I ended up giving them names like "Johnny McSnipey" and "Alicia Assault", which just felt...lame.

The game also crashed on me more than a few times, but I was running this off of the iPad 3, which is a little long in the tooth at this point.

It's portable XCom, and it's still great--the whole game's in there, which is impressive--but it's definitely not the superior version.

I guess on one hand it seems silly to avoid playing the superior PC version when I already own it.

With that said, part of me wants to go ahead and buy this to do my small part in supporting actual premium games on mobile. I know my one purchase changes nothing, but I guess it would make me feel better.

Another thing about XCOM on IOS is that it'll drain your battery fast

The new levels are really good, and definitely more difficult and longer than the levels from the main game. Not "Perfect Paths" hard, but can be tricky.

axisofweevils

Holy crap! Today's real megaton is that more than two people can have the same first name.
Replaying Monument Valley now in readiness for the new levels. I previously played it on my Android phone, but I love the extra impact playing it on the big iPad screen has.

According to TA impressions, Framed is around "35 to 70 minutes" long. A bit shorter than I had hoped (at least 2 hours), but the game looks so good, I think I'll definitely be getting it unless some other new release really interests me

Its taken me awhile to realize but PocketGamer and Pocket Tactics > TouchArcade 90% of the time.

The guy who runs PocketTactics is too impartial to count. In the weekly roundups he just goes like "I like this game and nothing else, so there is nothing else worthy this week" kind of mentality, which is completely wrong if you run a gaming website.

I don't dislike it, because it cuts a majority of the crap out. The TA release posts give every free to play crap game.
