DirectX 12 will not be supported by Windows 7

I'll be switching to Windows 10 once that's out. I just hope I can keep all the stuff on my SSD/hdd when I switch instead of having to reinstall everything.

That's my main concern.
As I said, I fear this could end slowing down its adoption rate.
It's clear that DX12's adoption would be faster had it been compatible with gaming's most popular OS but I don't think this will prevent it from becoming the standard relatively quickly.
The fact that Fermi (400/500), Kepler (600/700), Maxwell (900) and GCN are DX12 compatible means there must already be a sustainable base for DX12 to build upon.

Shitty, but expected.
You're almost softening the blow by saying it's expected. It's just shitty.
This will just slow down DX12 adoption rather than helping Windows 8 and 9...emmm 10.
But it's expected and it's in their right to do it.
Is it really? To me it feels like there are marketing people calling the shots when it should be a broader decision about what is best for DirectX developers and card manufacturers. Microsoft is willing to throw this under the bus just to get a bullet point for Windows 8.

"52 percent of all Microsoft OS users are still on Windows 7, and that number is actually growing"

lol nice.

Expected. It's why I've been saving and planning a full PC rebuild around Windows 10/DX12 for next year when it all drops.

Watch them extend it due to the number of businesses running W7. Nobody in large corporates wants to touch W8 with a 10 foot pole.

I'm pretty sure those businesses have no interest in DirectX 12 for gaming purposes anyway. And if you're talking about update support, they'll still provide continued support for businesses.

I was hoping I could transition from Windows 7 to Steam OS eventually. I would love to get out of Microsoft products entirely. Not looking good at the moment. Maybe in another year or two things will change.

I don't particularly dislike it (aesthetically, at least), but that doesn't even matter since I virtually never have to use it.

Using Start8?

I'm not against this if there are technical reasons behind this. As much as I like Win7 it is going to be 6 years old when DX 12 comes out.

Almost every single CPU on the market since 2004 has been a 64 bit model and yet the heavy presence of 32 bit operating systems has slowed down games moving to 64 bit as a requirement since barely few months ago, where it started to become the standard.
I'm not sure I feel as much of an optimist as you.

I'm using Win7 and I have to say it's not.

It even has no DX11.2 support.

In what ways?

Windows 7 is better than 8 for gaming because there are framerate issues for older titles on the same exact machine. For example i can get 60 fps or more for UT 99 on the same machine with w7 and if i am on w8 with the same machine then its 30 or lower. It has been a huge issue that they never fixed for some reason.

I'm not even mad, I was planning on upgrading my OS anyway. I'll miss good ol' Windows 7, but it'll be 10's time to shine.

Have you tried the compatibility mode?

Solves most problems with old software.

This shouldn't really come as any surprise. I guess MS wants to just heard everyone like cattle to their newest OS. I am still on Windows 7 and I have no plans to move to 8.1. But I might make the upgrade when Windows 8.2 comes available.

I don't really use Windows for anything beyond gaming anyway. I find that I have been using Linux for everything else.

I also love the mouse bugs that I can't seem to fix in Windows 8.1 because they decided to change the way high DPI mouse are interpreted. #1 OS for gaming confirmed.

With Mantle being an open and (soon to be) "crossplatform" solution i wish Nvidia would stop being butthurt about everything AMD does and simply start supporting it. Rather they choose to wait more than a year for something that could be achieved today but isn't done by AMD.

Alright.

In the case of 64 bits games the reason is (in my opinion) that there was (until recently) only one platform which was 64 bits. Now that the PS4/XBO are 64 bits based we naturally see it being the baseline rather than a dreamy expectation. You could make the same case for DX11 vs DX9. In a multiplatform environment consoles weigh more than PC, that's not a state of affair we like to acknowledge but that's the reality of things.

As you're well aware DX11 is causing quite a lot of trouble to developpers and console APIs are closer to this low level approach to the hardware than DX11, therefore with DX12 being on Xbox One and PC with PS4 sharing (I assume) a lot with it at least on a phisosophical level (the term is not well chosen but you get my point) we can easily see DX12 being adopted quickly and DX11 fading into irrelevance pretty soon.
I'm not expecting games to be DX12 only for a while, fall 2015 games will have both a DX11 and DX12 path with probably graphical differences between the two : Nvidia/AMD are supporting, assisting devs to implement DX12 after all.

This ploy worked flawlessly when they did it for Vista!

/sigh

Vista was an inherently terrible OS to begin with. 8 had issues which 8.1 fixed. 10 should be a step in the right direction as well. I'm still waiting for the presentation of the consumer side of things but that won't be until next year.

I can't tell if you're pulling my leg here. The translucent GUI was worst decision to hit the Windows interface.

Whoa now. Aero peek is one of the best productivity improvements in a long time. Granted, whoever set the default border size to 4px was crazy, but that can be changed.

But wait, 10 would mean an even numbered release which means skip, so wait for 10.1 to fix what we didn't need/want in 10?

false. No DX11.2 support and generally worse framerate in the newer games.

In which games is this the case?

I can't find benchmarks that show a clear advantage for 8.1

The combination of the popularity of Windows XP with the long and healthy run of the Xbox 360 pretty much ensured the long lifespan of DX9. It took DX11 and Windows 7 to finally de-throne it.

But Mantle being a crossplatform solution is just bullshit.
It's specifically written to support an AMD chipset and what AMD actually means with that claim is more or less "Oh, you know, we'll release some code so if you want you can take it as a track and write your own Mantle-inspired API.
