It's clear that DX12's adoption would be faster had it been compatible with gaming's most popular OS but I don't think this will prevent it from becoming the standard relatively quickly. That's my main concern.
As I said, I fear this could end slowing down its adoption rate.
Who still uses Windows 7 for gaming though? Windows 8.1 is superior in every way.
You're almost softening the blow by saying it's expected. It's just shitty.Shitty, but expected.
Is it really? To me it feels like there are marketing people calling the shots when it should be a broader decision about what is best for DirectX developers and card manufacturers. Microsoft is willing to throw this under the bus just to get a bullet point for Windows 8.This will just slow down DX12 adoption rather than helping Windows 8 and 9...emmm 10.
But it's expected and it's in their right to do it.
Watch them extend it due to the number of businesses running W7. Nobody in large corporates wants to touch W8 with a 10 foot pole.

I don't particularly dislike it (aesthetically, at least), but that doesn't even matter since I virtually never have to use it.
Windows 7 is far far better for gaming than 8.

Almost every single CPU on the market since 2004 has been a 64 bit model and yet the heavy presence of 32 bit operating systems has slowed down games moving to 64 bit as a requirement since barely few months ago, where it started to become the standard. It's clear that DX12's adoption would be faster had it been compatible with gaming's most popular OS but I don't think this will prevent it from becoming the standard relatively quickly.
The fact that Fermi (400/500), Kepler (600/700), Maxwell (900) and GCN are DX12 compatible means there must already be a sustainable base for DX12 to build upon.
I'm using Win7 and I have to say it's not.
It even has no DX11.2 support.
In what ways?
Nope, i don't like to install bloatware and I virtually never used the W7 Start menu anyway.Using Start8?
Windows 7 is far far better for gaming than 8.
Seriously, who the fuck actually prefers 7?
Windows 7 is better than 8 for gaming because there are framerate issues for older titles on the same exact machine. For example i can get 60 fps or more for UT 99 on the same machine with w7 and if i am on w8 with the same machine then its 30 or lower. It has been a huge issue that they never fixed for some reason.
false. No DX11.2 support and generally worse framerate in the newer games.
Mr. Burns "excellent" gif
Except for the bug that breaks the camera in World of Warcraft that has yet to be fixed since the launch of Windows 8.
Have you tried the compatibility mode?
Solves most problems with old software.
Me because of Aero.
But i'll switch to 10... and try to put Aero there.

I'm not sure I feel as much of an optimist as you.
This ploy worked flawlessly when they did it for Vista!
/sigh
I can't tell if you're pulling my leg here. The translucent GUI was worst decision to hit the Windows interface.

With Mantle being an open and (soon to be) "crossplatform" solution i wish Nvidia would stop being butthurt about everything AMD does and simply start supporting it.
