Assassin's Creed Unity -- The graphics "leap" we've all been waiting for.

The really impressive thing about AC Unity is that it uses all these state-of-the-art rendering techniques, not in a cinematic corridor action game but rather in a huge open world setting.

I mean, these downsampled shots (courtesy of the good people in the PC screenshots thread) are just some of the best realtime graphics I've seen in a game:

I'm surprised there hasn't been many attempts to get something like HBAO+ on consoles. It looks so natural and often ends up saving performance as well.
Performance most likely. HBAO+ isn't free at all even on Nvidia GPUs.

Kezen,
I wanted to let you know I followed a lot of your comments concerning this game (graphically) and agreed with everything you said. :)
Yes, I can deal with 30+FPS as well for what the game is doing.
Thanks ! ;)
I also like your input into game tech.

Gotta agree, on my PC the game has looked fantastic. The skin is incredible, the animations are superbly done... Even the hair is pretty well done IMO (I had some legit wows looking at Elise's hair).

Impressive stuff, my pc is not up for this kind of stuff and the console versions didn't sound any good...shame since i'm really tempted to give it a go :(

All these graphical terms and what I'm seeing in these screens are not impressive to me. If you didn't state that you were running 1440p, I would never believe you. I believe the art in the game is good but I fail to see leap the OP is referring to here.

Edit: Why did you downsample the screens, for free AA? doesn't help your case.

What games are "impressive" to you then ?

Videos of the cutscenes on YouTube look truly ridiculous.

I honestly think that besides the hair the character models look as good as Uncharted 4.

I've been playing Ryse over the past two weeks, and frankly the screenshots you posted do nothing for me. Ryse looks so much better than anything else I've played that I can't even appreciate something like Assassin's Creed Unity.

and I own every single game that boasts "next-gen" graphics except Ryse.

The console versions look fantastic too, they just needed to nail the framerates a little better. For all their problems, the game is really beautiful everywhere from what I've seen. Now make a good game that looks like it :/

I'm sorry you aren't impressed.. but if you give me shots of perhaps another game (that is currently out NOW) that is more impressive then we can compare.. :)

Yeah I agree, but they are completely insane with 10k NPCs, and I think that's the main issue with the performance, not the graphics itself. 3k NPCs would be impressive already and much better to render. This game is not only CPU bounded because of that, but GPU bounded as well, every NPC has a shadow which requires more GPU power, keep that in mind!

So yeah, Ubisoft optimize your engine and give us a NPC setting. Max would be 10k NPCs, High would be 6K Npcs, Medium (PS4,Xbox One) would be 3k NPCs and low would be, similar to AC Black Flag 400 NPCs.

Furthermore, this would be the perfect showcase of DX12 or Mantle. Games like AC Unity are the reason why these APIs exist.

Is there a link to the dude who posted these? And does he post his specs? This looks at least 2 generations ahead of the PS4 version, which looks atrociously blurry and last gen.

Gotta say, even though the AC games have never clicked for me and Unity seems to have a mess of problems in particular, hats off to the artists -- this is some absurdly impressive work and it's gotta suck being a lighting, environmental, or character artist who created this mindblowingly beautiful game only to have it ripped apart over its glitches and poor performance. Absurd level of care and detail clearly went into the core visuals.

It looks great, but you need one monster of a PC to play it like that, and even then it's not at 60fps.
I still feel like the game is a visual mess on other aspects like pop-in and LOD distance.

Also, is it true that there is no day-night cycle in this game? I know that they can make the game look much better if they remove that, but I still feel like having a day-night cycle just makes the visuals much more compelling.

The most impressive thing for me is still the amount of work that was put into the details of this game when it comes to the visuals. Big props to the artists.

The global volumetric lighting is really nice. Wish the watter had some SSR though, the cubemap or mirroring is a weebit off.

The game looks insane in stills but in motion it looks a lot worse.

The scale of the game is very impressive and maintains high quality even in doors. The NPC count is just too over the top and results in performance issues and general jitteryness + jank + pop ins.

Yeah it's one of the best looking games ever made. The game's geometry looks very 3-dimensional. Nothing really looks flat. The lighting only enhances this too. The textures are great as well. Lots of variety so the scene looks even better.
I'm not sure it's running as well as it can though. I doubt it. Some people's GPU's aren't being maxed out.
Far Cry 4 also looks amazing maxed out. The lighting is phenomenal. Apparently performance is great too.

this game doesn't even look as good as infamous SS imo

Infamous SS has a lot of colorful particles that mask it's generic look. The animation, art direction, scale and scope of the game -- as well as lighting and materials don't even come close to AC:U.

only game that looks next gen is FF15 so far.

FF15 does look really good. But it's scale doesn't seem to tax it and the lighting still isn't quite up to snuff with AC:U. I need to see more with FF15 before I reserve judgement though.

It does look pretty, but as a console gamer, I would have preferred a game with the graphical fidelity of Black Flag running at 60fps. Have they patched the PS4/Xbox versions of Unity to 30fps yet, or is that not in the cards?

There's something off about this game that I can't put my finger on. It's like half oils half not, and there's a strange fuzziness to the image.

I seriously can't think of another open world game which comes close to Unity at maxed settings on PC. I played Infamous and it's not on the same level at all, and tessellation will only make that more impressive (and taxing hehe).

I wholeheartedly agree.
Pretty ? Sure but I have not been blown away as I'm right now before Unity, what a marvel.

I think the game is good/pretty for an open world game - but so let down by problems :( Anyone else getting the clothing pop-ins on the people around the city?

Everyone who has this game is getting not only cloth pop in but full characters popping in and out. That's why I said the game looks different in stills than in motion.

The game looks the best in those Rifts with crazy visuals, effects, lighting and no jittery NPCs.

Holy mother of god! Look at all those details. And dat lighting!

The Ubi team must have spend so much time to design that.

I'm sad they get that much critic, sure bad performance is awful but there are more important things than that. Everyone just bashes Ubi and the game because of the performance but nobody acknlowledges this incredible amount of details.
