Far Cry 4 PC performance thread

Oh man, yea. The foliage looks so much better here, and I think that's something that is making or breaking the look of the game for me. Seems if you can get TXAA, it really goes a long way in cleaning up that foliage and makes for a much nicer looking image, even if its a tad less clear. SMAA would be second choice but leaves a bit to be desired. MSAA seems fairly ineffectual on its own, even at 4 and 8x.

SMAA gives you massive DoF bugs :(

Yeah, I'm gonna wait for the new drivers tomorrow to play the game and hopefully my 980 has enough power to run this with TXAA at 1440P.

Anyone experiencing stuttering after, this is like 5 min into the game,
after the car crashed
and you have this wonderful view,?

THere is this very strange stuttering here and in the very beginning at the table.

EDIT: How much impact does a SSD do?

Well in Far Cry 3 there was great Alpha to Coverage support that affected all foliage. In this game it only affects the grass and doesn't do a great job, so the trees are going to shimmer. That temporal aliasing really took me out of the game in Far Cry 3. It wasn't until I had a good enough system to blast almost all aliasing with 8x MSAA and AtoC that I really began to enjoy it.
It seems like TXAA will be the only choice for me once I play this.

This needs to be posted to demonstrate how great this game can look:

far-cry-4-lighting-quality-002-ultra.png

Looks like Skyrim.

295x2 is indeed disabled and uses only one of the built-in 290x cards.

Nevertheless it is going pretty smooth at high settings, enhanced god rays, extra trees, at 1440p. Pretty much flucuates from 65-75 fps. Can't wait to see the performance gains once they figure out a Crossfire profile for it.

That's a bad news, i've got a 290 OC too, and i expected 50-60fps on Ultra like a gtx 970, will see, i'll dive into this game once beaten Unity(i'm almost there), i hope meanwhile an update could improve performance for AMD cards

OC 290 here (1200/1500mhz), along with i5 4570 and 8GB ram.

Everything maxed with SMAA and full fov I get 50-60 fps almost all the time. Probably more but I have v-sync on and it stays near 60 more than 50. Only problem area is the Banapur village where it drops to low 40s, just like FC3.

EDIT: This is with 14.11.1, haven't tried the new one yet.

I am on an ssd and was getting weird stuttering, though I think mine was from running out of video ram, knocked back textures to medium on my 2gb card and it went away.

Fluctuations in foilage is a little annoying, going from 60fps to 45fps.

Was there an update uplay installed on me at some weird time? Last time I just played it i now have the Option to Save, Save and Quit and Quit to desktop, before I didnt have just a 'Save' option.

It also took out screen refresh options from 30hz, now I can only use 50 or 60hz, was going to lock it to 30 and up some detail but cant do that now.

But wait, what about the Gameworks conspiracy from 2 pages ago? NVIDIA ruining games for AMD GPU owners? Surely it's not bollocks from people who don't know what they're talking about?

Played for 2 hours SP and 1 match of MP.

I played for a bit on NVIDIA preset mode. I was about a steady 45-50fps with huge dips and stutters every once in while. With the preset on Ultra, I got a locked 60FPS until I am on a vehicle and booking it. Thats when the the framerate stutters and drops to 40s sometimes even lower. I guess its loading all those textures quickly or something. Same goes with I use the very-high preset. Hopefully it performs better when the drivers are out for it. Multiplayer on Ultra was a good experience and locked at 60fps until getting on a vehicle. I am thinking about just locking the FPS at 30 and playing on NVIDIA.

But I have a 780 4 GB vram... and I now set it down to medium... better but still stutter.

From the NVIDIA guide:

For the best Far Cry 4 experience we recommend updating to the new Far Cry 4 GeForce Game Ready Drivers, which will be released at approximately 16.00 UTC on Tuesday, November 18th. Included are the latest performance optimizations and tweaks for Far Cry 4, and a SLI profile that scales at over 90% on the system used in this guide.

Body = ready.

Let's hope the new drivers include an SLI profile for DA:I as well.

This is my (and a lot of other people on the Steam board) experience with the game so far.
The only supposed fix is to remove and disable any HID in your device managers and play with barebones mouse and keyboard but that doesn't work. So yeah, can't even start. GG ubi.

Was getting same error with my bluetooth dongle, removed it and its fine. But now I have to play with wired DS4. Ah well, at least it works.

Is anyone having problems with borderless windowed? When I either have it on, or I alt tab out of fullscreen(which puts it into windowed borderless mode for some reason) I can only see a quarter of the game on my screen, the rest just goes off it.

Outside that it's running really well for me at 1440p, maxed settings apart from AA set to SMAA.

Chaps!

So i pre-ordered and downloaded over night (my internet isn't so fast) and i booted this morning to have a look

Running in 1440p with G-Sync on an overclocked 4770k (@4.4) and an over clocked 780Ti.

I jacked all the settings to "Nvidia" and in the very first room my shadowplay FPS counter was at 25, walking around it went to 29.

Is this because the Nvidia driver isn't out? Because a new patch is needed or is that setting ONLY for people running 42 Titan Z's (looking at you Smokey)

See this for NVIDIA's recommended settings:

Performance will undoubtedly improve with the driver released later on today.

Is that with hardware aa or smaa?

Nvidia Fur will be added post launch and it should look way better.

Oh man, no fur at launch? That's lame. Assassin's Creed still doesn't have the Tesselation patch. Wonder how long it's gonna take to implement those features. I might play Dragon Age until they're added.

Nothing set in the Nvidia Control Panel specifically for the game but i put the pre-set in the game settings to "Nvidia".

I can't remember what that was off the top of my head. I think it was maybe 4xTXAA

Nothing you should be surprised by then. 1440p + 4xMSAA/TXAA = huge performance hog.

If it was msaa/txaa(hardware msaa), your performance is where it should be relative to the ps4. If it was smaa not so much

TB is generally off, often massively so, when he is talking about tech. At least that was the case when I still watched some of his videos years ago.

He's off because he's not hugely competent technically and because he usually have a so powerful hardware that what he says is irrelevant for most people.

But he's also one of the VERY FEW who pays attention to small details and little glitches. For example in the Unity video he showed some gaps in some polygons models, or weird flickering in the distance.

And about FC4:
the game can look pretty, but it's interesting to notice that in FC2 we could mow down trees, whereas FC4 is so advanced that you can't interact with them in any way at all (beside a slight sway if you shoot at them).

Also, AI is ridiculous. They drive at crazy speeds and mow down their own companions all the time. They have no memories, and there's basically nothing realistic or advanced in how they are in the game.

So, it looks prettier, but it's SO MUCH behind the innovations and little things added by FC2.

Gonna try the new Cat drivers tonight and see if it gives me a decent fps boost.

If not, does anyone have a solid way of locking the fps to 30? I tried using RadeonPro to limit the fps to 31 and then enabled Vsync in game but it felt horrible. Not 30fps horrible but worse. This was on default High settings. Without the fps lock and using triple buffering in game it didn't feel to bad but the drops when running/driving were a little jarring.

My setup...(on a 1080p HDTV)

i5-3570 (Stock...non-K)
8GB DDR3
7870XT @ 1150MHz 2GB
W7 64bit

Turns out on my i7-3770k + 980, it runs at 60 FPS most of the time, but I have a constant stuttering.

Monitor refresh rate?

If you have Vsync enabled, try disabling it. If the stuttering is gone with Vsync disabled, you could try a frame limiter. If this game is anything like Far Cry 3, frame times will be all over the place.

Also try setting GPU max buffered frames to 3 either in the game or through NVCP.

Yes, but FC2 has a lot of problems as well. It's disappointing that they didn't build on the good stuff in FC2 while creating these new games. I don't really like playing FC2 at all, to be honest, but I was impressed with what they attempted.

Happens with both Vsync on and off. 60 hz refresh rate. I'll give the pre-rendered frames a go a see if that helps.

Not liking the sound of this stuttering, I had the same thing happen to me in FC3. At first I thought it was my crossfire 7870's but when I sold those and bought a 680 it was still there. I would have liked to have picked this up but between Unity and the chance of stuttering again I'll pass.

Yes otherwise it hangs, I just did it myself.
I'm getting better frame rates than in FC3 on a 7950. Playing with most settings on ultra.
I had to restart uplay once, no issues since.

BTW this is another title that will not run on external drives.

Yeah it's strange on my computer it just installed the beta drivers in a separate folder in the AMD directory but it doesn't seem to actually use them.

Something is weird with driving and jitters in this game. Even if I drive slow at the running speed, it stutters badly and fps drops to 30-35, but if I run on foot at the same speed its mostly smooth. Combine this with new Halo driving controls and I think I'm just gonna run on foot or fly everywhere.

Intro, fucked around. 1920x1080. No AA. Everything else on Ultra, Nvidia stuff on. Between 55 - 100+ fps. Over 60fps 90% of the time.
