Digital Foundry vs GTAV on XONE - performance analysis

Yeah that's why ACU looks so much better on PS4... oh wait. Yeah, I don't believe it.

Completely different games, by completely different devs, with completely different attitudes on how to make their games/to treat each console.

Get over it, the foliage is denser on the PS4 because the PS4 can handle it. The X1 can't without sacrificing things in other areas. Gotta have sacrifices for dat 1080p. The comparison to AC:U, a CPU-heavy game, is lame at best.

I don't know if the 1.2 patch improves things, I haven't been able to successfully download it yet, but driving through the centre of the city, the frame rate is hot garbage on the PS4.

People with the Xbox version seeing similar performance in that area?

Jeez...settle down. You're getting a little heated here, aren't you?

This lower foliage - is it just one area, or across the whole game? All the screenshots, so far, seem to come from one area. In which case it could simply be an error. If the XBone foliage is lower in multiple areas, then good on R* for doing something more with the PS4 - we all still get the same game, just one version has a few extra bells and whistles.

I find it odd the DF chose not to run a full comparison of the PS4/XB1 versions, even if it took a little extra time to get the PS4, but instead just ran an analysis of the XB1 version without putting it up against the other platform version.

I guess that's one way to avoid all the debates and stuff.

It's purely coincidental that everyone else had the PS4 version and DF analysed the XB1 without putting it up against the PS4 version. We'll have none of that nonsense here ...

I noticed a slight judder effect when driving around while it's raining. It's hard to miss when you're making a turn, but not noticeable when you're driving straight forward. Not bad or anything, but it's definitely there. XB1 version.

Not likely. Foliage density is something that Rockstar used last gen as a general purpose solution to maintain similar fps on both platforms. Makes sense that this solution is used again.

None of this should come as a surprise.

PS4 GPU has:
~40% more shader/Flops/compute performance (1152 SP vs 768 SP)
Twice the pixel fillrate per clock (32 ROPs vs 16)
Higher texel fillrate (72 texture units vs 48)
And all with the GPU clock being 53 MHz lower than Xbox One's (800 MHz vs 853 MHz)
Plus, the memory bandwdith to support it all 176 GB/sec vs 68 GB/sec, though Xbox One has the high BW ESRAM to help but that memory pool is only 32 MB.

Resolution is the same for both versions, but there's more room to stretch with PS4 GPU. Not that the difference between the two versions truly shows how much more powerful PS4 GPU is, but at least Rockstar took advantage of some of it.

That one is 50% /nitpicking

wasnt it the same for Far Cry PS4?

Thought Emoji Movie was good. Take that as you will.
We're honestly having an actual discussion about foliage? In a GTA game?

Seriously, who the fuck spends all that much time out there looking at the foliage.

Both versions look fine.. the PS4 of course looks better. Not a freaking surprise at all.. but seriously guys.. foliage?

Anyone who thinks it looks bad on Xbone go back and play the 360 version again and then play the Xbone version.. it's a significant upgrade.

I can't find that scene in that gif that started all this.

It got me so intrigued that I actually went out and bought the xbone version.

I can say that some areas it's really quite barren in foliage and other areas there is some weeds.

What I am really disappointed is is not the grass but more of the lack of traffic density but then maybe it's just the xbone version.

Performance related things, like foliage, in a performance thread, who would have guessed?

Digital Foundry thread discusses differences.

Comes in and complains about discussion of said differences.

Is this true?
Where that comparison came from? If true... thats a big difference. Maybe the first multiplatform game I wont be getting on XB1. But still... I need confirmation on this.

What hell!? 1080p/900p difference didn't do it, 1080p/720p difference didn't do it. Marginally better frame rate didn't do it. But a little denser foliage did!

I wouldn't even use the CPU as an excuse for the piss poor job Ubisoft did on ALL versions of this game. One obviously got more love than the other it really is that simple and pretty obvious. The current trend is multiplats perform better on PS4 unless developers are purposefully aiming for parity. I generally buy all multiplats on PS4 the only multiplat I currently have on XB1 is CODAW for "Reasons"

Marginally better? I dont know, by that gif the difference seems too much. And 1080p/720p? Im not sure if I know what youre talking about.
Anyway, I think I wont be getting neither PS4 or XB1 versions... The most important to me is the online, and it seems there was no improvements over last gen (except for number of players).

Thread whining about technical discussion in a tech thread. Never thought I'd see the day.

My honest opinion is that the PS4 version has too much grass. On the One I can play it because I'm reminded that it's a videogame. On the PS4 version the grass makes it look too realistic, I might forget that I'm playing a videogame and then it wont be fun any more. When you combine the fact that the PS4 has too much realism with the better controller of the One and the fact that all of my friends play on One, the choice to me is clear.
