Etrian Odyssey x Mystery Dungeon cross-over announced during livestream

It's turn based, and you can attack diagonally in these games. It's possible to get the advantage before the enemy too. In fact, the player actually gets to attack first in the gameplay footage shown in the trailer.

Ah, that explains a lot. I didn't get that memo. Suddenly it all makes sense, lol.
(The trailer posted made it look as if it was real time.)

I'm sure this is fine but what I really want is EO5 and it feels further and further away with each spinoff and remake announcement. This'll be the fourth EO game (more or less) since 4.

edit: ha.

Looks great, but I'm worried about EO now.
I just hope Atlus doesn't try to milk the franchise.
I know it's a silly thing to worry about but guess I've been on the edge ever since EO2 DLC was announced.
I don't want EO to have the Persona milking treatment ;_;

Awesome. Could be a great collaboration of two different styles. Will be keeping a look out for more on this.

Persona Q is EO5, more or less.

And this isn't being developed by Atlus, it's Chunsoft's game.

I'm sure an actual EO5 is still in the cards, probably after Persona Q and EO2R.

I need EOU3 on 3DS before EO5. It would be a shame to leave the best EO without a remake.

No, Persona Q is first and foremost a Persona game (Atlus said so themselves).

This new game is made by Atlus, not SC (unless RyougaSaotome heard wrong).

And EO5 was always in the cards... they've said repeatedly that the Untold remakes were there to help people wait before EO5.

Originally picked up a DS for EO. Will get a New 3DS probably for this and PQ.

Hope this isn't considered port begging, but I am curious about the lack of these types of games on the Wii U.

Right. But a Persona game that looks and plays (and sounds?) exactly like an Etrian Odyssey game.

In my book, that makes it an Etrian Odyssey game with Persona wrapping paper.

Just like this is a Mystery Dungeon game with Etrian Odyssey wrapping paper.

But I only care about gameplay and disregard story, etc., so my view comes from that.

I would be a little shocked if that is true.

They've given Mystery Dungeon to other developers before (for Chocobo and Yangus), but it's been a while since they have made one themselves (not counting Pokémon because that is "Win Button Mystery Dungeon").

This is the best announcement of all time. The two best dungeon crawlers ever made in Japan finally meet!

I'm not sure if this game is totally developed by Atlus btw, looking at the trailer, it Spike Chunsoft is pretty heavily involved. The producer is the EO series director Shigeo Komori, while there are two directors. Yukari Yokoro is the Atlus director, she's an art designer on the EO series, while Seiichiro Nagahata is the Spike Chunsoft director, he directs and co-directs all the Mysterious Dungeon games iirc, including the Pokemon ones.

The character designs are also a split, with the regular EO character designer doing the base character designs, and the Shiren character designer doing the finalized designs. The music staff and monster/art design are all EO regulars.

I've always wanted to get into Mystery Dungeon esque games just like I've always been curious about Dungeon Crawlers before finally playing Etrian Odyssey. I'm so excited about this lol.

Also they picked like the best fight music to redo for that trailer.

I don't think it matters what Atlus says, so much as what the reality of the game is. PQ plays exactly like an EO, it appeals to EO fans, it is developed by the team who makes EO and directed by the EO4 director. For all development purposes, it is a game which took up the resources which would otherwise have been used for EO5.

The EO Untold series is made in parallel, so it probably looks something like this in the pipeline now:

EO4 -> PQ -> EO5? PQ2?
EOU -> EOU2 -> EOU3

Meanwhile this is a EO flavored MD game, so it's not going to impact the pipeline much. It's a similar collaboration to P4A and P4D where Atlus provides a lot of the heavy lifting for art assets and music, while the other developer makes the actual game they're familiar with.

How do Mystery Dungeon games differ from roguelikes? I don't quite get how a party will work in a game like this but I'm interested.

How nifty---not to mention this will cement the confusion that pops up all the time online asserting that EO is totally a Roguelike!

Definitely have to give this a shot someday.

Graphically it looks pretty good. I'm curious to see how they'll translate the gameplay into a roguelike format.

Is the name literally just Etrian Odyssey x Mystery Dungeon (the Japanese names for the franchises of course) or something different?

Seems like 【世界樹と不思議のダンジョン】 (Etrian Odyssey and Mystery Dungeon) is the official name.

It's literally "World Tree and Mystery Dungeon," so my guess would be that it'll get localized as Etrian Mystery (Dungeon) or Etrian Odyssey: Spin-Off Subtitle.

Cool, cool! I was never a huge fan of the mystery dungeon games, but did get moods for them. Will definitely give this one a try if we see it here in NA.

Never played MD before and am typically not a fan of roguelikes in general, but I'd be willing to give this a fair shake if it's going to have EO involvement.

Not yet, but considering that every game so far has been localized, there shouldn't be much to worry about it outside of its status as a collaboration.

What's more, Atlus and Spike-Chunsoft got some solid ties too. Atlus USA published Conception II in the West, they're distributing both Danganronpag games, they're working on Attack on Titan localisation...

So yeah, the fact that it's a collaboration won't change anything imo. It's not like Mystery Dungeon was a manga/anime IP or anything.

My guess is, Atlus USA will have a special PR where they confirm localisation for EOU2, EOxMD and EOV... just like they did with Persona Q, Persona Dancing and Persona 5.

Yeah that makes sense. Also, I'm guessing this pretty much means Atlus is cementing Etrian Odyssey as one of their pillar franchises now.

Atlus please finish Shin Megami X Fire Emblem first before announcing your next crossover! I seriously doubt that game is still being developed if they haven't even aknowledged it in a year or two.

DIfferent teams. Not to mention that it appears EO x MD is being worked on by the folks at Spike Chunsoft. I'm guessing the ones who handled SMT4 are working on SMT x FE.

We have no concrete info at the moment, but pretty sure SMTxFE is mostly developped by Intelligent System.

Is this just Mystery Dungeon with an EO skin, or is it MD gameplay integrated with staple EO systems?

extremely disappointing if it's the former

If the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon games are any indication, they'll probably try for a mix of both series' gameplay elements.

It's going to be mostly MD with an EO skin, but that "skin" will include stuff that EO is known for like character creation for the party, a menu driven town, the various classes in EO, a HP/TP system, EO themed dungeons and monsters, and stuff like resource gathering at points of the dungeon. But the majority of the gameplay - dungeon exploration, combat, presentation, will be MD style.
