IGN: 5 Reasons Wii U is Worth Owning

Any combination that sums 8. You can use Wiimotes, classic controllers, pro controllers, GameCube controllers, the gamepad and even 3DS systems.

Oh wow, that's very good. Will be a blast at the yearly video game/drinking party I usually have a few days after Christmas.

I dont need third party games. They are awful

Judging by the amount I'm seeing this incredibly erroneous and close minded line of thought echoed across a small contingent of Nintendo enthusiasts across the web and on these very boards, I'm starting to believe that comments like the one above are in fact, very much real opinions. Yikes.

Completely true. Wii U easily has the best, most diverse library of all the current consoles, and that's been true for some time now. It struggled early on, but it's really matured into a fantastic console with gaming experiences you simply can't get anywhere else (and will never be able to). Of course, it's also had a full year's head start, so all of the above is understandable.

Hopefully the PS4 and Xbox One's libraries have really stepped it up by this time next year.

Wii U is still extremely over priced for what it is. It should be $199 new at most with the tech inside. Nintendo makes great games, but the hardware is horrible.

a new ps3 is about $200 with no games or $250 with a game
Personally I think the fact that a wii u also comes with a game, and that the tablet lets me play VC Nintendo games, watch amazon prime and netflix movies and youtubes while curled up in my bed is worth the extra $50-$100

Hell yeah it's a great time to own a Wii U. Hopefully it'll do better this holiday season and throughout 2015 but I'm not keeping my hopes up. I need to get one soon, need that Smash fix :(

Got a Wii U because I had the money and wanted to play Smash Bros. I'm really surprised by how much I like the GamePad. I hope they keep something like that for their next console.

I'm pretty happy with the stacked Wii U+PS4 2014/2015 combo lineup. There's a lot of games I'm interested in within genres I haven't played in awhile due to fighting games.

It's not cool to be ignorant. I'm just going to assume when people like you hear 3rd party games you only think of COD and Assassin Creed.
What? Is my opinion! Do you think is really impossible to someone to be tired of what third parties have been publishing?

I really dont like the road third parties games have been taking. Most of em. And to be fair i see a lot of people on gaf that feels the same way

Assassins Creed, batman games, borderlands, need for speed, gtas, CODs. I tried them all. And im not happy with em. They are, in my opinion, awful.

Yep, you need to educate yourself. You'll probably keep blindly dismissing 3rd party games instead though.

The gamepad is expensive, they'd bleed money if they went 199 right now, and you can get the refurbished one for 199.

I paid around 450 bucks for mine back in November(because Mexico) and I don't regret it one bit.

I would have recommended you to wait, though I got it for a similar price. Nowadays I've seen them for like a lot less in Monterrey, and it's a better option now.

My only New-Gen console so far has been the Wii U.

I don't feel like I've missed out on anything special from 3rd parties, yet.

I live in Monterrey too and I just really wanted one already, it was the day Mario 3D World came out!

Americans make me jealous, getting a Wii U for 299 sounds like a freaking dream.

What about Nintendo fans like myself that haven't cared about Mario Kart since the SNES, and never cared for Smash Bros in the first place? This year would be downright pathetic if it wasn't for Bayonetta 2 and Captain Toad, but those are just two games. Two.

You do realize that third part games aren't limited to those...right? You do realize that there are Indie games that are third party. That there are more third party games than just ass creed, batman, borderlands, etc.

I don't see how the gamepad can be expensive though, unless they got a really bad deal on parts. There are $50 tablets out there with better screens.

ps3 is overpriced as hell too, the big difference is ps3 has a hugeee library of games for cheap. wii u not so much.

Yeah! Donkey Kong: Tropical Freeze? What's that bullshit Nintendo! Give us real games!

"The wiiu has no third parties!!!"

"Its ok, im not happy with third party games nowdays."

"But... indie games are third party too!"

Ok, the wiiu has indie games. So the WiiU has third party games now?

(And i have a lot of indie games on my wiiu, i like them a lot.)

Wii U does have a strong lineup, and I commend Nintendo for sticking by it as well as it has.

There are *very* few games I look forward to more than I look forward to Xenoblade X, and it's Only On Wii U.

My feelings exactly, I had my Matio Kart fill with double dash and the same with smash bros melee, both fantastic games that have not changed enough with their sequels to interest me.

I'm glad people are enjoying their purchase but I can't fathom why Wii U is constantly being compared to systems that have been out a year less, It's ridiculous. Also the controller, I just do not get the point of having an amazing television only to play on a handheld, maybe I'm doing it wrong? Dunno.

I can think of 10 reasons to own a Wii U

Smash Bros U
Bayonetta 2
Mario Kart 8
Tropical Freeze
Super Mario 3D World
The Wonderful 101
Pikmin 3
Nintendoland
ZombiU
NSMBU/NSLU

Well, you know the gaming chains here want that $$$.

By the way, that was a year ago. Can't believe they were still that expensive back then.

And the incoming Splatoon, Star Fox, Kirby, Mario Party, Captain Toad and Zelda - for those that want to know about some of the Wii U's future games.

3. lack of RPGs

That problem's not really exclusive to the Wii at the moment. None of the systems are really an RPG haven at the moment other than DA:I & a few smaller/indie titles like Transistor & Child of Light (which is also on the Wii U). And yeah, the RPGs will come, but that's also true for the Wii U (which is getting an exclusive sequel to one of the best rated RPGs of all time).

I got on the Wii U train for $300, and it's had the best software lineup I've seen on a console since the GameCube, maybe exceeding it.

People bitch about the price, but a $200 entry fee to the best games I've played in years, is pretty rad.

I primarily game on PC, and I think I care far more about my Wii U library than any PC game in recent years.

This isn't accurate one bit.

It depends on what you were expecting from the systems by their first year really.

I don't see anything must have. Especially since the term "Must have" shouldn't be taken lightly.

Although to be fair, that will probably change for the PS4 with Bloodborne early next year.

Yeah the ps3 has more games but I still think that if a system has about a dozen newer releases that you really want to play, then it's worth buying for about $300.
Factor in somebody like me who didn't play a lot of games on the VC and the wii when they were originally released, I think its library is plenty

Just Zelda and Xenoblade Chronicles X will take up months of my time. With Yoshi, Kirby, Star Fox, maybe SMT x Fire Emblem and Project Zero 5 it's going to be a super strong year for Nintendo games. Plus the 3DS has potentially tons of great Japanese games to be localised like Bravely Second, Project Steam, lots of Etrian Odyssey games and Zelda Majoras Mask. It's looking like a full year before any announcements are even made!

It's easy to lean on Nintendo with such lackluster Xbox/PlayStation line ups, but you have to wonder how quickly Nintendo will fall back in the press again when the other systems ultimately ramp up. There's just nothing the Wii U can ever do to compare to a normal system catalog with literally zero third party support.

Everyone hounds on at PS4/XBone for not having that many first party games, but then forget that the Wii U's roster was also pretty lacklustre for the first year and a half, it's only just started to pick up traction this summer, despite it being released in 2012.

Xenoblade X is a huge selling point for me as well. Xenoblade on Wii was one of my most favorite games of all time. That said it's not out at the moment so as an RPG/story driven game fan I'm not seeing any immediate reason to get a Wii u with the price still being high IMO

System would be so much better if it were $199 with a pro controller.

I think alot of people would love them to ditch the gamepad. Make it optional. If it makes the system cheaper and sells more then it is good.

The gamepad was bleeding edge technology when it was released...

How many tablets/pads do you happen to know of that can stream nigh frame-perfect 60 FPS?

I think you may want to review your history on releases on the WiiU in its first year: SM3DW, Pikmin 3, W101, ZomU, and Lego, just off the top of my head and all are good games in their own respect. Even its poor first year showing is still better (and actually was functional) than PS4/X1s first year.

Is the Wii U a great system? Absolutley. Should the Wii U be someone's only gaming device? Absolutley not.

Just like last generation Nintendo's console is the perfect compliment to PS4, Xbox One or PC players with its small and unique catalogue.

No it wasn't. It was made fun of for being a fisher price tablet when it was released by many and there were better budget tablets at the time for $50-$100 with better larger screens. Pretty much any android tablet with a Chromecast can stream 60fps video. Nintendo makes good gamesgames like I said earlier, but this hardware is bad. There is no reason they should still be forcing a tablet controller on people when people have shown they don't want it.

This is true, but as a multiplatform gamer, no one single system would make me happy :x

Yeah, they had a decent enough showing, but so do Xbone/PS4 (I prefer the PS4 games to any Nintendo ones mentioned, but that's personal preference). That didn't stop everyone and their grandma from jumping on the 'Wii U is dead train' earlier this year. What I'm saying is, sure there might not be that many games for them at this moment in time, but the games are coming.

Basically, they want us to pay a high price just to play nintendo games and they can't even support the whole year with good games since there's no 3rd party support. That's not a good perspective for the future, not in my book. Just an unfavorable cost x benefit.

Got my Wii U this month. Bayo 2 and Smash are both phenomenal. Smash is probably my GOTY, and I've never ever played any of the others.

It was. What you fail to understand is that we're not talking about the tablet's plastic or the its screen (which isn't cheap...), we're talking about the hardware hidden inside that Nintendo and Broadcom developed for the streaming technology. Moreover, Chromecast does not do things on the level of having to two-way broadcast information and interaction. Remember, the tablet doesn't run any of the games, which means it has to be funneling inputs while reproducing reactions immediately to remove any frame lagg and buffering. Try some PS4/Vita Remote Play and then play remotely on the WiiU, its night and day on the delay.

Yeah, they had a decent enough showing, but so do Xbone/PS4 (I prefer the PS4 games to any Nintendo ones mentioned, but that's personal preference).

That's fine. WiiU's first year was still richer on exclusives (at this point its simple mathematical fact), now preference and taste will define whether or not one cares about said fact. Now, what WiiU lacks which has been gutting it, is the multiplats though recent trends seem to be burning their own bridges anyway on that front, lol.

lol wut?

did you just miss GTA5, Dragon age inquisition , Far Cry 4, alien isolation, shadow of mordor and evil wtihin coming to ps4/xbone?

ps4 and xbone stink exclusive wise but third parties are killing it, none of those games will be on wii u.
No, they won't. They'll be on PC (read: that thing that every person on this forum already has)
