Here's the Japanese press release: http://www.4gamer.net/games/196/G019662/20141125021/

Relevant footnotes:
※Windows(DirectX.9対応)版からWindows(DirectX.11対応)版へのアップグレードはできません。

- Last-gen and new-gen versions use different game servers.
- Last-gen and new-gen versions are not compatible for online matchmaking. (PS3 to PS4 matchmaking is not supported)
- You cannot transfer save data from last-gen to new-gen.
- You cannot upgrade the Windows (DirectX9) version to the Windows (DirectX11) version.

In the press release they also specify very clearly that "last-gen" refers specifically to the PS3, 360, and DX9 versions, while "new-gen" refers to the PS4, XBO, and DX11 versions. No confusion.
This is fucking crazy.

Bamco, you're going to have to sell these people Dark Souls 3, don't shit on them.

Fuckwits.

Shameful. From the PC perspective, I mean.

Namco's handling of the downgrade was disgusting to begin with so I guess this is nothing new.

Wow, that's really scummy of them. Definitely won't be buying this nor will buy their next game full priced if at all.

So... There is such a thing as a last gen PC =3

Yeah, you could effectively make the claim that the difference between DX9 and DX11 is a generational difference. If your PC is only capable of DX9, you're relatively equal to the PS3/360 generation. If it can handle DX11, then your PC is closer to the PS4/XB1 generation.

I've played over 200 hours already and have no motivation to start all over again, ah. I take it those NPCs and new events are not part of the ps360 patch and re-release? or are they?

If you double dip here, you're part of the problem.

I bought it on PC already once, and they failed to explain themselves for dumbing things down a couple weeks before launch.. Well now we know why.

It's okay though. I didn't buy their planned DLC either.

Check out clever clogs over here.

If it's "okay" and you feel so great about yourself, why don't you go back to fighting the good fight by just enjoying the games you enjoy. You think anyone's gonna be swayed by such "part of the problem" nonsense?

Go ahead and call the publishers liars every time this happens. It's never going to change the way they operate. Just make your own informed decisions and buy/play what you want to play.

From Kotaku's article:

Whew. Consider this Dark Souls II: Remastered... with a clunkier title. There's also a new patch—v1.10—that you'll get no matter which version of Dark Souls II you own. The patch "will add new features including an additional NPC to seek out along the treacherous quest through Drangleic as well as expanded story, in-game events, improved balance, and online matchmaking functionality.

LOL

So they downgrade the game at the last minute, use false-advertising (even on the steam store page) to get people to pick the game up, then announce a "remaster" and have the massive balls to sell that remaster for PC when there's no reason the first release should have ever been downgraded at all.

You would think they would want to push this ahead of Bloodborne's March release as there's a generational leap in graphics dividing them (and the A team).

Yeah since they're clearly trying to sell the DX11 version as a totally new product on its own, that's the only goodwill option left.

This is bonkers. I don't know how many people will end up purchasing this but as it stand we barely hit 5k at highest concurrent users on steam. Throw in the stupid SM and it makes co op nearly non existent and now this?

God damnit Namco.

I don't think you could ask for better proof of a company's disdain for their fans than the way Namco's handling the PC release.

Yes! I was MIA last generation for a while, so this will be my first crack at DS2 on the PS4.

Bloodborne and DS2:Remastered....can't wait!

I nearly felt bad for waiting so long with starting that game... now let's wait some more and see if this will even be an improvement on PC compared to the modded regular version!

Can't believe they're so shortsighted. By pulling this shit they're alienating the entire prospective buyers of the PC version of DS3.

If the visual enhancements are free for PC users and the extra contentis priced as a dlc add on($15) I am okay with this.

From Bamco's tumble

Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin will be launching in the Americas on April 7, 2015 on Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3, PS4, and PC/Steam (DirectX 9/DirectX11)!

All versions of the game will include the following features (Existing Dark Souls II owners will receive a patch to implement these elements):

All 3 DLC packs included in the game (Crown of the Sunken King, Crown of the Old Iron King, Crown of the Ivory King).
Additional NPCs added for an enhanced story experience.
Parameter adjustments for improved game balance.
Augmented item descriptions.
Improved online matchmaking functionality.
Xbox One, PS4, and DirectX 11 versions of the game will include the following features (in addition to those listed above):

Additional upgrades to graphics, sound, performance.
Increase in maximum online players in single session (6 total).

Holy shit at 6 people total in game!

Wait, wait, wait.

So not only is the new content free of charge for last gen owners, the three previous DLCs are going to be free too?

Someone please confirm.

I actually regret buying a PS4 more than I did before because now I don't want to spend a dime on Bloodborne.

What they're doing with the PC release is ridiculous, I hope people bitch loudly about it.
