Game Informer January cover - No Man's Sky

Btw, someone was wondering if we could play with friends. I remember Sean saying that it's not possible for players to "join" a session in order to play with a friend. And there's little chance too that you meet someone at all since you're thrown randomely on a planet and there's like millions of other planets. The spaceships we see on the cover are AI controlled, they can help you fight other ennemies controlled by the AI.

It's a bit like Journey (online-wise).

Rime on the cover of Edge and NMS on the cover of GI. Suck it, indie haters.

ha! In general I'm not a huge fan of most indies (for one it seems most are variations of 2d platformers with abstract stories. I prefer more open world games with stories involved, or at least a tight story that feels like you are really playing it and not usignt as an excuse to play the game).

But, No Man's Sky has me hyped as much as Witcher 3. It just seems to have so much potential and until I know more I prefer to be hyped by it vs deciding already that it's going to suck (I'm curious where these people who have decided this got access to the game to already know this). If more comes out and it wasn't meetin my expectations, oh well. One less game to buy on my already tight budget. But if I already decide it sux and ignore it I might miss out on a game that sounds exactly up my alley from everything I read. Besides with as few exciting games that came out this year and fallout nowhere in sight I'd like to be excited for something.

Love the tech aspect they are putting into the game but floating around space and landing on planets to wander around bores me to tears. Unless they have some gameplay reason to visit planet ala Mass Effect 1, just seeing a planet to see how random it is sounds a little dull to me.

Each to their own of course! Just not my cup of tea but I will keep an eye on it.

That sounds like it would become dull incredibly quickly. Look, this planet has mountains, but this one has orange trees! How many times can you do that before you get sick of it? 10 times? 20 times?

I'm a huge space geek, so I'd probably never get sick of it haha. The game probably won't be for everyone, though.

Knowing that every star in the sky is probably orbited by dead lumps of rock or balls of gas, do you want to go there and find out?

Yes) NMS is for you.
No) NMS may not be for you. Also you're dead inside.
Contrary to real astronomy where there are lots and lots of exciting unknowns out there, nothing in NMS is unknown. Everything needs to be well defined from the start, and every planet can be deterministically regenerated if the correct inputs are used. Therefore every planet basically becomes a representation of a number (a 64-bit number IIRC). Knowing that there is source code that can say exactly why a planet looks the way it looks really kills the "exploration for the sake of exploration" aspect of the game for me. This is true for all procedurally generated games, but usually the procedural generation is not the main selling point like with NMS.

As a programmer I simply find it very hard to muster hype for this game, since I'm not buying the PR claiming it to be something magical and mindblowing. I would read any whitepapers they published about the tech though.

Some of you ripping PartTimeWarrior apart for not liking No Man's Sky...

I'm intrigued by it, you're intrigued by it, so what if someone else isn't?
All he had to do was actually note some of the games he felt would be a better choice.

As it is his post comes across half thread shitting and half whining.

Posting actual reasons and context makes a huge difference.

Hell I'd love to hear genuine mentions of other upcoming SF games of interest they could have picked.

Dammit I am hopping on a flight soon so I can't do my usual GI summary. I am sure someone else will cover everything. I am super excited for this issue.

You can be not intrigued by it without making ridiculous proclamations about the quality of a product you never played before.

I don't know the quality of it, but I can say that if they are able to create enough compelling, engrossing and widely varied economies, cultures, ecosystems, lifeforms, architecture, etc to populate entire galaxies through a randomized process, it will absolutely be one of the grandest technological achievements ever known to man. I just don't see that happening guys. Chances are it's going to be the same barren planets over and over with a few different mountain and forest patterns.

I'm not saying it's literally impossible, just... is it a good idea to get all these wild hopes up when this is clearly bound to be a shallow experience? If the shallow experience and a couple gifs of planets are all you're looking for that's totally fine. But I have a feeling some people are building it up to be more than that.

Man, this game, Elite Dangerous, and Star Citizen really have me thinking about checking out space games soon, like Frontier Elite II.

There's one zoom level in there I missed the first time I watched this footage. Made that planet look smaller than it actually is. That one area he's looking at zoomed out is like, a spec on the map of that whole planet.

I'm going to spend so many nights just losing myself in this game with my headphones on. Add some Mary Jane into the mix and it will be an
inter
stellar experience.

Quick-zooms out past a river and all sorts. Colour me on the vinegar-strokes.

Check user name and the fact that it is releasing exclusively on PS4 at least for some time.
Or rather than automatically assuming the worst of people, consider that they might be extremely skeptical for obvious reasons concerning repetition and actual gameplay mechanics.

So ridiculously excited over this game! I can't understand the people who think it looks bad. I just can't. Sure, different strokes and all that, but to not think it looks the least bit exciting...? That's beyond my comprehension. But I guess it's mostly people who want to constantly be told exactly where to go on their linear, scripted quests. And yeah, this game is definitely not for you. You've gotta be a bit adventurous, you've gotta want to go out and explore this practically endless universe just to see what you might find. I can't wait.

Man I swear, the only people who will be let down are the ones who know absolutely nothing and don't even attempt to follow the game and up with their own crazy vision for it. For anyone who actually DOES follow the info (and there is a decent amount of info out to you people who claim all you do is walk around and explore in the game!), we know a lot of what to expect from the it.

Did they ever confirm Porter Robinson is doing the soundtrack? I know he wanted to do it. If so it will be godly and this game will hit new levels of insane.

Just imagine soaring through space listening to this

what the fuck is up with all the no man's sky hate lately?
Well so far all we have seen is nice demo for procedural generation, and not everyone is so keen on exploring randomly generated shit. Particularly when actual details on other aspects of the game have been sparse or nonexistent.

Gorgeous cover

I like that GI has been branching out and covering lesser known and downloadable only games for cover stories lately. It goes a long way to making them seem less like a Gamestop preorder catalogue.

There's your confirmation of a physical release.

Not really. Unless it's actually mentioned in the piece, No Man's Sky is more or less a digital game. The fact it's gotten a cover from GI or Edge doesn't imply a digital release (apply too for Rime in case anyone thinks of saying the same thing).

There's constructive skepticism and then there's "wheres muh favorite upcoming AAA blood and guts game".

All these good games coming soon and the pick No Man's Sky?

So .. I am not crazy hyped for this game yet BUT.. come on man they are trying to do something unique and it does sound interesting. Why on earth does it not deserve a cover?

This game has a ton of interesting things going on from the tiny studio to the grand plan they have and I for one really want it to be something unique and different... I mean would you have rather another AC cover? I am 1000% ok with covers like No Man Sky... the other games get plenty of coverage.

1. GameInformer is owned by GameStop. A company that specializes in the pre order of physical based games and uses this magazine to spread info to drive reservations.

2. A digital only game has never been the cover story of an issue of GI.

Fortnite has not been confirmed for consoles or physical release and has been on the cover.
