Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor |OT| One Title to rule them all

For anyone in the UK who like me who doesn't have this game yet, Amazon UK are having a black friday deal on the game tonight from 7.30. No idea what the price / discount will be till 7.30 though.

Someone lent this game to me (PS4).

It's a little confusing and overwhelming at first (only played for 20 minutes), is it getting better at explaining the game's mechanisms and the plot ?

Yeah, it was a bit overwhelming at first, but believe me just put 2 hours into it and it should click completely. My one tip would be don't be averse to running away from fights early on. You start out relatively weak but get a handful of upgrades and you'll be able to be a lot more bold when it comes to engaging the enemies.

However the plot is....let's just say I don't remember it much. It's a loose excuse to kill orcs, and that's all that's really needed.

Just started this up, the world, ugh, so dull, I dont know.

Yeah, I'm kind of having the same feeling. Started playing a few days ago, probably have 4 to 5 hours put in thus far. It's a good game, but it definitely stops short of being great for me. Maybe it'll get better as I get farther in, but I'm struggling to understand how this was nominated for GOTY at Keighley's Game Awards while Sunset Overdrive was not. Also seems odd that so many people pan Ubisoft collect-a-thon games, yet I've not heard the same criticism levied at Mordor. Mordor probably doesn't go to the same extreme as Ubisoft titles in this respect, but it clearly borrows many of the same principles.

Many in this thread have said it feels overwhelming when it opens up, in regards to the collectables, so it's been brought up, but it's nowhere near ac unity levels, all collectables also give you something, story wise mostly, so it's not collecting just for collecting's sake.

Outside of the ridiculous number of slave missions, I though the amount of side content (weapon quests and collectables) was reasonable.

I've just realized that I don't have 100% of achievements anymore because the last update added some more. Well, time to play again I suppose!

Oh man, you're right!

Hopefully I get some free time this weekend,

Edit: Is it live yet? Seems like it's from "Lord of the Hunt" but don't see it in my dlc listing. Maybe wrapped into the season pass.

So my computer has a GTX 670. I'm planning on getting a GTX 970 at some point, but probably don't have the money right now.

My question is whether Shadow of Mordor would be worth getting or waiting for PC or getting the PS4 version?

Yea, just played it for the first time and it was slightly overwhelming.

What upgrades are the best to grab early on?

When starting out, should you mainline the story for a while or go after captains?

Just bought this on Steam for 33% off. Luckily I managed to sell a bunch of Counter Strike stickers for £14 to pay for it. It's 40GB though, so I guess I'll leave it downloading over night.

I'm using a 2GB GTX 680, hopefully that'll allow me to run high, I know it says 3GB for high but people are saying that's not exactly true. I'll be picking up a 4GB GTX 970 in a month or two anyway. I very rarely buy single player games but it looks really great and I've been needing an RPG fix for awhile.

The Ultra textures barely look better anyway. You'll probably have to turn down some settings in the second area but the game looks pretty good despite the dull-at-times environments.

I actually found the first area in the game to be heavy towards memory utilization, shuttering starts early after hitting the limit.

Just so you know, this is not an RPG, but an open world action game, pretty much like Assassin's Creed or Arkham City,

Well shit, oh well, it looks good anyway and I liked the Batman games.

So glad I ignored every sense in my body that was telling me not to buy a Lord of the Rings game; they are almost always crap.

In fact the only reason I ended up persuading myself that it was worth the risk was this thread. Yes, reviews were mostly positive but none were really convincing enough to persuade me one way or the other.

I think it also doesn't help that the game appears to be rather bland and generic at first glance. Drab and boring visuals with copy-cat gameplay aren't exactly the most attention-grabbing mix. Even the game's main innovation, the Nemesis system, isn't something that comes across very well on paper and can't really be appreciated without experiencing it first hand. It looks like just another generic action game set in Middle Earth.

In hindsight all of these reservations seemed to be entirely baseless after a couple of hours actually playing the game. In fact I had a hard time putting it down and can't wait to get back to it this weekend.

So yeah, thanks GAF.

Fuck my life, sit down to play some and I notice my Xbox 360 PC receiver is broken. I tried playing with keyboard/mouse but it felt so clunky, a controller is definitely better for this type of game IMO. Just ordered one off Amazon which will arrive on Sunday, that's £20 I really didn't have to spare but oh well.

How it is broken? I know for some of those receivers, most of which are knock-offs now a days, you'll have to manually go into device manager to tell windows which drivers to use.

Well, in any case remember to do that for the new one.

It's an official Microsoft one, the problem apparently is a blown fuse inside, you can fix it by soldering something according to Google but I don't have a soldering iron.

Bought it digitally on that flash sale at $30 dlls :) does it comes with the badass outfit? is the Legion Edition

Anythign I should know before I start it?

Any tips?

If I want to interrogate I just RB on a weakened captain, right?

How do I mount those beast things? I have it unlocked but can't do it yet.

Also, I forged some kind of crossbow that lets me have infinite shots for a small period of time(?) but it wasn't clear on how to do it.

I also haven't seen any of those power what's it going on, the one with the red icon, in the field so far for me to gain more power. Where can I check my current power level as well?

TIA

Just beat this. Not a bad short game. Combat brand is too op though, once you get your hit streak down to 5, you can just jump/stun or just stun them and quickly combat brand, repeat. Soon the entire army is yours.

The part where you kill the warchiefs got a bit tedious combat wise. I just straight up took them on with all their bodyguards, and without brand it took forever to kill everything in those strongholds, even with stuff like barrels.

Started to play the game and have a few questions;

1. Ive already killed 3 captains ...didnt have te option to recruit them. Why not?
2. A captain defeated me but let me live. Why?
3. Do you guys have any tips? What to do and what not

I think you have to get far enough with the dwarf in the story? Eventually you're able to auto mount with a shadow strike brand thing.

So I'm about 40 minutes into this game, and I haven't died yet. Is the game supposed to be this easy?

The game starts out and gets easier, so if you're not dying now, chances are it won't get harder. I think people see different difficulty depending on how carefully they play or how often they run, at the beginning. You could try turning off prompts if you haven't.

You don't get brand until later, in the second map.
It's a certain trait some captains have.
Don't get too distracted on side stuff to start, for instance, branding is a HUGE thing locked behind story progression, so get far enough to at least unlock that.

Try to time the 'Counter Attacks' (Y) button, that usually solves a difficulty spike in fighting against a horde.

If a captain or two shows up when you are having a hard time, just run across the landscape like a hobbit and climb cliffs.

Not sure how long they've been up but the Steam achievements for the first DLC campaign are up so presumably we should hear about a release date soon.

Oh man, at one point I had two captains at the same time, I ran for my life!!

Playing with the girl as main character, the character model is probably the most detailed I have seen, game is beautifull.

Same here but the jump to the male skin during cutscenes is a bit jarring.

So what is the GAF consensus on this game? I love LOTR and I love action RPGs... Is this game good? I bought it on PS4 from Amazon just now.

I would describe the general reception as a great foundation for a series, super fun combat system, gets too easy at the end, narrow focus in other areas, weak story, lots of emergent gameplay when it comes to the generated enemies and events.

I am actually playing Post-Game with the female model switch for 100% achievements and its actually great, since the thin female model lets me see the fighting animations in full glory (previously blocked by the bulky weird face male model).

Really having a blast with this game. Only about 5 hours in so far. As others have said, it really is a good blend of Arkham's Creed. The Nemesis system adds a little freshness and makes things feel more personalized.

I was running away or getting killed early on, but as I got more familiar with the combat system and unlocked some abilities, fights began turning in my favor. I'm really content right now just unlocking all the forge towers and doing side quests, although it seems like the intent is to always have a captain you're going after.

Love it so far.

Help me, GAF!

1. There is little no Intel on my map and I'm supposed to go kill the Warchiefs. Why has the Intel dried up? Heck, the last time an Ork with Intel appeared he ran when he saw me then leaped to his death off a cliff.

2. I have an Elite Captain Ork that as far as I can tell is invincible. He has a shield and spear. I can't stealth kill him. I can' shoot him. I can't leap over his shield to attack his back. I can't fight him in the front due to the shield. Fire doesn't hurt him. Nor bees. The only thing I have left to try is getting one of those Battle Cats assuming one pops up when I take the mission to kill him. His only Weaknesses are "Fighting finishers and range attacks" Which you know thanks to that Shield and his immunity to everything else seems pointless.

Use a Tower to Advance Time, orcs will shuffle up.

Do you have the dominate ability yet? If you do, dominate some orcs and have them finish the job for you. Also riding a Caragor into him works, and if there are those hanged meat around him, shooting one down will summon a Caragor out of nowhere.

I advanced time once and while the Orks shuffled up it didn't seem to help the Intel problem.

When I first started the game Intel was everywhere on the map, now it's not. I wonder if I'm not doing something to unleash the tide.

WB support came through for me. Took longer than expected, since Black Friday, but I got my Legion Edition content. If you bought the game off the PSN and didn't get the two extra missions and the dark ranger skin in your add ons contact them, you'll need to send a picture of your purchase email stating that you bought the Legion Edition. I just said I bought this version of the game, and I did not get the content advertised. They sent me a code today and I was able to redeem it with no issues for the extra content. So happy I have the dark ranger skin now! Now to take on the rest of the game.

You can also get intel on warchiefs from any captain, if you're having trouble finding worms or intel drops. You'll have to weaken the captain until his skull icon turns green before you can grab him and interrogate him though.

Well congratulations! You got yourself caught!
Got the platinum last night finally.

Took a long break from the game after hitting the 70% completion mark on my save out of fatigue and a bit of boredom. Glad I eventually returned as I rather enjoyed some of the challenge trophies involving dominating warchiefs/starting riots, etc... The game was rather easy yet still engaging being able to completely bend the orc army to your will.

Was a bit down on it thinking I would never actually finish it off before I set it aside, but glad I eventually stuck it out. Flawed, but still one of the more engaging experiences of 2014.
