Was that the greatest troll in the history of the industry? (FFVII)

Crowd starts cheering.

FF VII logo.

More cheering.

Trailer starts.

It's gonna fade into new Midgar graphics, right? They got these shiny effects in the backround. Surely it's coming.

Trailer ends.

Hashimoto in his deepest, loudest voice: "FFVII coming to PS4!!!" or something that was barely intelligible.

Great stuff.

I didn't assume it because I am not crazy and I know that SE has struggled with development, that the bulk of their staff are tied up in the existing white whale projects they've been chasing for a decade, and that they weren't magically going to have 300+ people working in secret on a fan fever dream rather than a new product.

When the logo came up, my immediate reaction was "oh, FF7 PSX playable on PS4. Wonder if they're using Gaikai or they've got the emulator running? Wouldn't streaming like 5 minutes of the game actually be more bandwidth than just downloading it?" The fact that it's an actual port was a pleasant surprise, honestly.
Fair enough. Realistically it's impossible given their current standing, and even I knew that. But as soon as that fude said "IT'S BEEN 17 YEARS!"...there were definitely better ways to handle it, I'm honestly just awe-struck that they presented it in such a way that a majority would be led to believe otherwise.

I'm stunned, Stump, just stunned.

Absolutely incredible how out of touch they are with their audience. But hey, what a time to be alive for non-FF7 fans, lol.

I cannot stress how great this was. That they cut to the crowd reaction before showing what was on screen, when I saw that logo I knew what was about to happen and started laughing uncontrollably.

Square is like a formerly wealthy, near destitute parent with kids in their late 20s that still believe in Santa trying desperately to get them to move on.

It's kind of funny.

It is also kind of infuriating.

Ended up going out on a low after what was actually a solid event.

Horrible, horrible desiscion making by both Sony and Square. This was a non-announcement that really didn't need to be on that stage, and the show ended up being worse as a result of it being there.

I still see the funny part though. If only barely...

Well stated. Until Square finishes their next few projects do not expect something major. It looks like now they have finally got their ship in order and can finish a few games after we get 2-3 releases then we shall see where they are.

You know damn well it was right to expect a FF7 remake when he started talking.
Still funny as shit though

It really isn't because of the reasons Stumpokapow already mentioned. I can't really put SE at fault here.

They out did themselves with this troll move. I was skeptical the whole time and by the end I was laughing. Square is crashing and burning because they simply suck as a company. Their latest Final Fantasy games are huge turds and they would rather make a shitty sequel to a shitty rpg than remake something their fans desperately want. I like Final Fantasy VII a lot but at this point im content with leaving it in the past and watching Square burn to ashes in the process.

I think if Nintendo put the F-Zero X logo up on stage and said "We really liked F-Zero X for N64", I wouldn't assume they were leading into "We're spending tens of millions of dollars to make a brand new F-Zero game exclusively for Wii U even though we've spent the last 5 years talking about our changing software strategy, our increasingly selective portfolio, the fact that we need outside developers to help with lower-level franchises because we can't spare the manpower, the Wii U's relatively poor hardware install base which is fine for major megaton games but might hurt lower profile stuff". And I wouldn't call it trolling if they didn't.

For me, Square Enix "gets a free pass" because the logic of this thread is "I want a remake, so it's trolling that I didn't get one". I do not believe that a CG tech demo that was made the better part of a decade ago that they announced as a CG tech demo is reason to expect a full price full budget remake the better part of a decade later for a different system.

If the worst people can accuse SE of is that they were tone deaf to just how crazy their fans are, then I think that's praising by faint damning.

Why would they fly Hashimoto out to this not-so-small conference and take up time to... announce a port of a 17 year-old game?

Why waste that time? What's the point?

People's expectations are going to rise because they wouldn't expect that sort of prep for something... like this.

It's the type of thing where, as someone previously mentioned, a brief blog/press release a week before release would suffice.

Does Square hate it's fanbase? I'm asking this seriously. This whole thing was just executed way too well. They had to have known people would be upset. No way in hell they are that fucking closed off and out of touch. No way...

This is all just so spiteful.

I mean, the show had such momentum.

How could anyone think that THAT was a good idea? Square are god damn trolls.

Stumpokapow has given me more than enough reason to not be upset and to not have freaked out and been over-hyped.

...but I'm still irrationally pissed.

I disagree because not everyone is stumpokapow. Maybe his first thoughts were all those interesting insights into SE's broken systems. But I think it is fair to say not everyone will have that kind of information as context when presented with '17 years ago'. Certainly the audience in the room didn't - they started yelling as soon as those words were uttered.

Plenty of fans have asked for a FFVII remake. I imagine it is pretty damn high on that third party list. So when you stand up on stage in front of thousands, you have to know the kind of expectation you are addressing. Being responsible would be to manage those expectations with kid gloves - say 'port' or 'PC version' early. The guy literally laid the groundwork to feed expectations of a remake, and then played a video that was almost edited to back such a thing up. And then it didn't deliver.

It was the ultimate 'slow dawning realisation' video - I'd have loved to have had a camera on the audience and watch as the waves of 'oh' washed over them

Look, fans are clearly expecting too much, but you'd have to believe Square and Sony are both comprised entirely of idiots to not believe they're having a bit of fun with the fanatics. This reaction is exactly what they wanted. They knew what they were doing.

It was pretty spectacular to see the hype levels rising, only to come crashing down instantly when they knew it wasn't a remaster/remake.

Square has a FF VII: Remake under a "BREAK ONLY IF EMERGENCY" glass in the middle of the CEO's desk.

Whoever was "trolled" only have themselves to blame. This announcement actually made me happy since i never got the recent pc version but i;ll gladly buy it on PS4.

Was getting caught part of your plan?
I let out the biggest fucking laugh as I watched it happen on screen.

I'm not one of the people who was looking forward to an FF7 remake, but good god SE, what the flying fuck were you guys thinking? There's a HUGE difference between a PORT and a REMAKE. It's not that damn hard to understand.

Look, the fans aren't just stupid, or not thinking critically. FF7 remake is easily the most sought after remake of any game, and for someone to get on a stage like that, and bring up a game with graphics (models) that aged worse than many games.... it was a troll. An intended, dirty,

Would love to see their reaction watching this on their Japanese offices.

Screw it, we need our own gifs of this

Yes, it is.

Fly a top level guy halfway across the world to talk on stage about FFVII and announce and port of a port of a port.

I didn't think Square Enix would attempt a new troll after FFXIV, but they just did, and did it better.

Would love to see their reaction watching this on their Japanese offices.

Why would Sony let that shit fly on their stage? I am not upset over it, I have given up hope of a remake years ago, but it is almost sad. WTF were they thinking.

Did Square honestly think people would get hyped for this? They are delusional. This demonstrate's an embarrassing disconnect with their fans.

Yeah. It wasn't done on purpose per se, so I can't really call it trolling. But, FF7 is absolutely the most called for remake ever, and has been for a long fucking time now. They have to be aware of this. So, the real truth is that they are so fucking delusional/out of touch that they think this is giving fans what they wanted.

Again, this just shouldn't have been a big stage event announcement. It should have been a simple press release.

I never boarded the hype-train, but when that logo popped up I really thought that the mythical remake was really going to happen.

Moral of the story; Nothing good happens when Hashimoto is up on stage.

Why do people actually want a remake of that game.

Let it stay in 1997 where it is innocent and beautiful.

A REmake situation where they upgrade the visuals, fix the Engrish and rearrange some gameplay elements to fit how JRPG systems have evolved could work. A direct transfer with nothing more than visual polish would be a definite mistake.

Maybe they're not trolls, but ignorant? I mean if a Nintendo rep were up on stage mentioning F-Zero and putting a big F-Zero logo up on-screen for all to see would you blame people for anticipating an actual new F-Zero announcement and being VERY disappointed when it's a F-Zero X re-release? (better yet a standalone F-Zero X purchased seperately from a Virtual Console version you might already own?) I don't see how Square get's a free pass here. At the very least even if it's not entirely on them they should have realized that showing FFVII's rerelease in this way is a little tactless/careless. It IS on them to consider the feelings and expectations of their fans - not saying they should bend to their wills but they should be aware of when something simple like this has the potential to mislead or disappoint their audience.

Had it been F-Zero I would have immediately assume enhanced port/vc release, because I just find it very hard to believe they'd make a new one.

Shawn? Remember that Vib Ribbon call you made after fucking up at E3? Time to get your phone out again. This one might cost a little more.

that FFVII troll is just... heart breaking. I'm not even expecting a re-make or anything, but the guy came out with the FFVII logo right behind him and speaking almost inaudibly makes everyone just gone crazy! I mean I was in front of my desk going "HOLY SHIT! NO WAY!!!" and having the huge grin on my face. but then as the clip slowly plays you realize there's no re-make and he said "this is a PC port.", the crash of emotion is just... too much. I know it's my own fault to get hyped up over just the logo but it's just so misleading. do they have to have the head of SE to come announce something so... "small" on such an occasion?
