I joke about being a "bad Asian" sometimes, but I try not to do it much around non-Asians. I don't want to open that door to thinking it's ok to say that kinda stuff all the time or be that Asian friend for them. lol

How does everyone here feel about mainland Chinese immigrants?

I was just reading this: http://www.latimes.com/entertainmen...ation-architecture-20140511-story.html#page=1

I live there. The article frames this new expansion as a good thing, but really it's a new type of gentrification, and it's pushing out older residents, who cannot afford the ridiculous housing prices.

Wow. So interesting. We've got a similar thing happening here in Melbourne, Australia, too. Loads of Chinese money coming in and pushing residential house prices up for over a decade now.

It's a very strange phenomenon. I cant quite decide how to feel about it, to be honest. But I worry about the supporting city and civic infrastructure not expanding as fast as they should to match the influx of new people.

:x

I'm pretty sure I sat across from Nathalie Kelley on the train this morning. I'm sure I looked creepy when I kept glancing over in her direction but I couldn't figure out why she looked so familiar. I didn't figure out who she was until after I got off the train. Of course now I admitted to watching Tokyo Drift.

Anyways, I had Pho today and a few hours later I was super hungry still. It's true, eating Pho will make feel full but after two hours you will feel hungry again. I was super hungry even though I had a big bowl.

I just found out that the small liquor store in the lobby of my apartment sells banh mi, and I been living here for almost half a year!

I been walking down the block formy vietnamese fix and all I had to do was take the elevator to the lobby.

Speaking of dating, are you guys dating asians too or other races? and how's your family reactions?

I used to date white men, but for almost 1.5 I'm really into asian men, and never look back. It's weird, cuz I wasn't into asian guys antil like last summer.

oh shit, never met another fiji indian before.

Hello!
And as for the race thing my older brother is dating a Japanese girl so I think my parents are fine with it. But I have a feeling they might be secretly disappointed if I don't marry Indian.

Not only Asian, but a fellow Taiwanese-American raised in very similar socioeconomical status with very similar family education, background, and culture.

I think my parents are really happy about it.

As for who I've dated in the past... uh, mostly Asian, a couple of others colors but those never lasted very long (usually because they were guys that dated my exes and I didn't want the drama, or they were guys that apparently had yellow fever and nty).

It depends.. frozen? Fresh? etc

Usually the package says. But, if you're talking about buns in a rice cooker, I usually just put enough water to float the steamer pot. That's how I steam mine.

These were frozen. The package is in Chinese from a place in NY, there's no directions. I went 13 mins and they seem OK. I bought bamboo steamer you use in a wok so I use that to steam stuff now. They tasted good, I need more now. :D

This is probably as good as a place to ask.

Does anybody know a free way to play Hong Kong mahjong with friends online? It doesn't matter whether it is In-browser or a downloadable game as long as it's not a mobile app since I know of plenty mobile versions.

oh you steam yours. i just pop it in the microwave lol.

Been craving the hell out of some steam buns of all varieties lately. Gotta look for some next time I'm at the store and try the rice cooker method.

One of the only two filipino foods that I care for, Dinuguan "chocolate meat" (pork blood stew). Had some today:

My cousin thinks Im weird as out of all the Filipino foods out there this is the one I like, the other being dinakdakan (cooked pig brains and guts).

Ooh we have pork blood sausage (I think it's pork) in Taiwan.. it's a kind of street food! The ones I've tried were mixed with glutinous rice. Not my thing, because I can't get over eating blood, but a lot of people seem to like it.

I used to be the same way with blood and "unusual" food. I guess the older I get the more daring I get when it comes to food. I don't know what it is with bloodstew but I love the taste, I used to hate the stuff growing up (then again it could be the blood part of it influencing my opinion).

I recently tried korean raw crab and japanese natto, had the hardest time swallowing it. is Taiwan blood sausage like korean blood sausage?

Wow... that sounds a bit unusual. Have you tried it?

growing up my parents and their friends would do some duck blood dish. i would watch then snap it's neck and cut into it and then drain the blood. and then watch them pick the feathers off and boil it off.

i never had this. don't plan on eating it. i'm okay with the roasted red duck from the asian market. lol

Wow... blood as food? Interesting... I don't think I have the guts to taste any kind of blood food, at least not yet. lol.

Pork blood in hot pot is dope.

And backslash, here's something maybe only you will understand. Whipped raw egg as a sauce base for hot pot. Apparently it's a Taiwanese-only thing because all my other Chinese friends think it's weird and gross.

HK people do it too. Beaten raw egg + soy sauce usually in a separate bowl, though they'll add other stuff too. So good.

Ahhh my grandmother used to slaughter chickens in front of me, drain the blood, and serve me soup with chicken blood in it x_x. I was like... 6.

& yeah, I've had the whipped raw egg sauce, but I prefer the peanut variety (I think it's Thai inspired?) for my hotpot :D. It is a Taiwanese thing, though, apparently, when it's mixed with shacha sauce.

Hell yeah shacha sauce. I use an entire silver can every time I do hot pot.

It's an HK thing too? Interesting.

Hello my Asian-gaffers! Didn't know there was an Asian-gaf thread. Well I am Vietnamese-American, born and raised in Ohio. It's boring out here.

Sup Asian GAF, just discovered this thread about 5 minutes ago. Some quick info about me. I'm Hmong American, if you've never heard of Hmongs then just watch Gran Torino. I'm one of those kind of Asians. It wasn't a very accurate portrayal of Hmong people when it came to certain things but it's all cool, we got our 15 minutes in Hollywood and at least a few more people know that we exist compared to before. Besides that I gave myself this name over 10 years ago when it came time to creating a PS2 user name to play Madden 2003 online. I wanted to use a stereotypical name that would indicate that I'm Asian so I came up with this and I've stuck with this ever since.

Now for a story I want to get off my chest. This past March I got married, but only traditionally and not legally. I have insurance with my current job and wanted to enroll my wife. I explain to HR at the time that I wasn't legally married so if it would be OK. They weren't sure but said I could probably do it. So I did it and finally a month ago I got a letter saying she would be removed unless I provide proper documents. So we get legally married and bring in the paper to my HR lady. I told them that I did say I wasn't legally married before but she refuse to acknowledge that this could be possible and that if any one of them heard it they wouldn't have allowed it although it happened. But it didn't end there. She kept asking if we got married in this country. I was completely baffled and confused and explained to her that my wife and I got traditionally married but not legally. But she keeps going on about talking to someone who got married in another country and says that she thinks it was me. My wife then finally says that we got married right here in North Carolina.

Anyways she finally faxes the document to the insurance company and we leave. We proceed to go on about what the fuck she was thinking. We're both standing right in front of her speaking in perfect American accents because you know, we're both born and raised here so why the hell would we got back to Asia to get married. That shit cost a ton of money, unless she thinks we're Mexicans or that she's Canadians. I can't figure it out and the entire thing was confusing and she seemed pretty ignorant about more than just that. She refused to believe to believe what I had to say but kept assuming that I was this other person when I never confirmed it until my wife finally did because we were getting annoyed by what we think she meant by it.

Thoughts on bitter melon? Used to hate that stuff, but now I can eat it and actually don't mind it!

I hate bitter melon. I'm 31.

Speaking of getting older, my coworker told me as you get older the more in touch you get with your roots. He said thats why I like blood stew now, "it's in my blood." I don't know about that.

Is it bad for me not to have any real interest in my Filipino heritage?

at first i thought it was just melon that are bitter but i had to google it.

They smell depending on how they are made I think. I normally don't like the ones uh stewed? No idea what the word is in English. The ones cooked with the salty eggs is good stuff though.

Bruh...

Anyways, Welcome!! :)

To be quite honest, I don't know what a traditional marriage is either. This is the first time I hear someone saying they got traditionally married. Maybe you should have elaborated more to the lady? But yes, speaking English perfectly, having been born and raised here, and people thinking you're a foreigner can be enraging. People are quick to make assumptions. I can imagine it must have been a frustrating process going through HR and the lady. So did your wife end up getting insurance as well?

speaking of eggs. anyone ever eat the fermented eggs with the baby in it? ;P
