NPD Sales Results for November 2014 [Up3: NPD Data Error, AC:U #5]

Kind of fascinating how Wii U can perform pretty badly for this month and yet thanks to the combination of Pokemon, Smash and Amiibo this is still probably one of the most financially powerful months they've had in a long time.

$500 w/ Kinect to $350 without Kinect in a year, sometimes lower that, with value-added bundles.

They martyred their original value proposition on the altar of Black Friday just to fucking TIE.

They're not winning this generation.

And they sold consoles keeping the brand healthy and they are in good financial shape?

No wonder MS didn't release PR early. Only a 10k difference--AT BEST--is embarrassing after all those price drops and bundling.

See, I don't understand this... MS has all the time been totally fine with leaving out stuff when making claims to make things sound better than they did.

This one would have been easy to spin. Simply just say you sold more and not say by how much... So I don't see why MS would need to stay silent on this. So why are they staying silent when they've tried to spin stuff before when they didn't even outsell PS4 before?

Because NPD does not 100% track the whole nation and extrapolates the rest, there is actually a very fair chance that the PS4 could be in front for the month due to a margin of error, though it can go the other way too of course. Either way, there is not a clear winner this month.

so ps4 around 910k-1m, xb1 around 910k-1m, and wii u around 245k.

ps4/xb1 doing a lot better than i had expected. wii u doing a lot worse.

I don't think Microsoft is worried about their sales in relation to Sony's (within reason) as much as they're worried about their sales in general. These results basically tell Microsoft that their issue up till this point has been more price point than perception, which I'm sure is relieving.

Glass half-full? :)

I really have no idea. This is seriously red alarm territory, essentially solidifies PS4's position in #1 this gen. That's how serious it is.

Hold up, how is it red alarm territory? I think it's been safe to say for quite some time that the PS4 was taking this gen WW, and fairly easily so at that. November clearly shows that there is demand for the XBO when the price point is where it was, so they take an increase in install base and figure out how to stay at that price point going forward.

I'm sure it's discouraging for them that pulling out all the stops just barely put them ahead of the competition, but I wouldn't exactly put it in "red alarm" territory.

I'm not buying the CBOAT bait.

There is only 1 number for the difference, so a reliable source wouldn't be a range. It's not like only 1 person knows the number, so you can't say it is masking a source or some shit.

Shows up to downplay any positive xbox news. Not a surprise.

Need more reliable evidence.

7-10k difference between Bone and PS4 is freaking nuts. What the hell, man? I didn't expect that at all, holy crap. PS4... goddamn.

So, this throws most of our anecdotal evidence right out the window.

  • Amazon indicated a much bigger gap
  • (Most) Insiders at retailers indicated a much bigger gap
  • All our pictures of stacks of consoles (kidding)

Oh, that's really bad then. Wii U is not even going to come close to Gamecube numbers confirmed now.

I suppose it's better to do Wii U numbers at $299 than Gamecube's at $99.

I'm not buying the CBOAT bait.

Uhh, that's what it is.
When someone says "first month", they don't mean "first 30 days", the mean the first month it came out (release month).

Well, maybe it's just my interpretation, but "first month" and "release month" mean different things to me.

Sony can't use this "pay to win" strategy Microsoft used this month. Anyway, if both sold more than 1KK this month, this is really great news.

Man if Sony actually made more of an effort in November they'd have easily took it. Though they didn't really need to. Sony were actually wise to keep the price the same and make as much money as they could than lose money just so they could sell a few thousand more.

And MS seem to have edged it in the UK too very similar to the US, so the gap just isn't closing despite the colossal effort from MS.

If MS won the first 2 weeks of November, then Sony had to really turn it around on Black Friday.

That would make the anecdotal evidence and Black Friday Retail Musings pretty hilarious. Cause if the gap was less than 10k, the anecdotal evidence was slightly, well, off and/or Sony really kicked ass in online sales.

Yea, the retail musing threads did paint a pretty different picture, what with the various piles of unsold PS4s next to dairy products.

Uhhh no it didnt? Do you know how to count? How is this a Pyrrhic victory? Stop trying to use words when you dont know what they mean.

Consider:

A Pyrrhic victory is a victory with such a devastating cost that it is tantamount to defeat. Someone who wins a Pyrrhic victory has been victorious in some way; however, the heavy toll negates any sense of achievement or profit (another term for this would be "hollow victory").¹

The "devastating cost" - we'll call it the strategic cost (less profit for larger margins) - is the fact Microsoft had to deeply, profoundly cut its prices on the Xbox One on market. Now they significantly diminished the value of the platform in consumer's eyes (i.e. "now we know if Microsofts gets a little desperate they will dramatically cut the price, so why buy when the price goes back up to $399?"), and the result was they barely scratched out a win over PS4. So, technically a victory, but with some serious cost.

And did this news negate the sense of achievement? yes. That's all anyone in this topic is talking about now, and the implications of it are clear: Microsoft can barely win even when they cut the price to insane levels. That's a serious problem for Microsoft, indisputably.

Word from connected people is that the first two weeks of November was what won it for Xbone. PS4 nearly caught up thanks to BF and GTA bundles. Exciting stuff!

This is as fascinating a result as could have possibly happened. I'm legit shook.

Yup, MS is just fucked now. With the Target gift card offsetting the price, it was $280 for an Xbone with 2 games. Sony just stuck with their standard bundles at $400 and sold the same amount.

MS is going to absolutely hemorrhage cash just to even try and stay competitive with Sony now. And keep in mind this was in MS' strongest territory. They're so fucked.

It's crazy. I think there's legitimately no way for them to win December NPD now.

I'm glad software and amiibo sales are doing good, because Wii U hardware sales are still horrendous.

10% over last year? Yikes.

MS PR statement only made reference to those two territories, so that's why I was asking.

December NPD is going to be insane.

Nah, it's Sony's for the taking. They have decent bundles for the whole month rather than just one week, and MS surely won't sustain that initial November momentum which will also have included some october hold-outs.

And they got sales out of it? You know that MS is worth billions and is not in any financial danger at all and the Xbox brand is healthy.

What are you talking about.

The Xbox division has never made much money and I would not be surprised if Nadella is unhappy with it

Stop saying this. It literally doesnt make sense.

I don't know what you're talking about, it absolutely makes sense.

Of course selling as many consoles as you can is the name of the game, but chances are Microsoft would want to sell more than Sony, right?

All these price cuts, bundled games, and retailer discounts, and they only managed to win by ~10k. That's a hollow victory if I ever saw one, considering they didn't do to well the other 8-10 months of the year (major releases excluded).
